YOU CAN HELP People just like you who live in the Hunter who want to see the horrendous rates of Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) in our region decrease are doing something about it, and you can too! You can help by asking the NSW Government to better resource DFV essential services in the Hunter, so we can better support victim-survivors. All you have to do to help is send a quick email to your local State MP and urge them to advocate to the Treasurer and the Premier to: 1) Implement ALL of the priorities the Hunter Domestic and Family Violence Consortium outlined in their pre-budget submission to better support DFV specialist services, increase access to safe accommodation, and ensure a coordinated collaborative response to DFV in the Hunter region, and 2) Increase funds to Men’s Behaviour Change Programs, and men’s early intervention and prevention services and programs in the Hunter. Make sure you put your name and address in the email, and let them know you want better resourced DFV services in your area so people who need support can get it, when they need to. Carrie’s Place will be running a campaign, “It Takes A Team”. Are you concerned that someone is stalking you? Are you experiencing harassment from someone? Here are safety tips to help protect yourself: 1️⃣ Limit Contact: If safe, cut off communication. If not, minimise contact. 2️⃣ Document Everything: Keep evidence—voicemails, texts, emails. Carry your phone at all times. 3️⃣ Emergency Preparedness: Have emergency numbers on speed dial. Trust your instincts and call 000 if in immediate danger. 4️⃣ Safe Spaces: Plan a safe haven in emergencies—police station, place of worship, public area, friend's house. Avoid going home if followed. 5️⃣ Travel Smart: Vary routes, don't travel alone. If exercising outdoors, bring a buddy. 6️⃣ Digital Safety: Be cautious with online info. What steps can you take to support a friend, family member, colleague or neighbour who may be experiencing abuse? 🟣 If anyone is in immediate danger, always call the police on triple zero (000). If there is no immediate risk, the best thing you can do is find an opportunity to speak with the person you’re concerned about alone - approaching them with sensitivity and empathy. 🟣 If someone discloses violence or abuse to you, it’s important you listen without judgement or criticism – the violence is never their fault. 🟣 Saying ‘just leave’ is not helpful – there are many reasons why someone may be unable or unwilling to leave an abusive partner. 🟣 Help build confidence by acknowledging their bravery in sharing. Tell them that you believe them, and that you want to help. 🟣 Help them make a safety plan – this could include being their emergency contact, agreeing on a code word or signal they can use if they need help, looking after copies of important documents and items in case they need to leave home quickly, or providing practical support like childcare or assistance with errands. 🟣 Let them know professional support is available – including Carrie’s Place. ➡️ Visit our bio link for more information.

We all play a part in preventing and responding to family violence. If you’re concerned that a friend, family member, colleague or neighbour may be experiencing abuse please remember there is always support available. Some of the common signs may be: 🔹 They may withdraw from loved ones or seem depressed. 🔹 Their partner, ex-partner or family member may undermine their credibility, criticise or humiliate them publicly. 🔹 They may seem afraid or nervous when this person is around, or may have cuts, bruises and other injuries with unlikely explanations. Some of the ways you can support them include: 🔹 Listening with openness and without judgment 🔹 Tell them you’re there to help them. 🔹 Let them know that what’s happening or has happened isn’t OK.

Statistics show that reports of domestic and family violence increase over the Christmas-New Year Period. If have concerns or are in an abusive or unsafe relationship having a safety plan is important. Here are some safety planning tips that might help you to make a start. 🟡 Identify a safe friend and a safe place 🟡 Keep an alternative or prepaid mobile 🟡 Memorise important phone numbers 🟡 Make a list of key documents or items that you may need to access quickly 🟡 Hide an extra set of car keys, if you can 🟡 Seek doctor or healthcare support 🟡 Protect your online security as you prepare 🟡 Try to take evidence of abuse or violence with you 🟡 Report domestic or family abuse to the Police as soon as possible.
