God has a plan. Has someone spoken that phrase to you before? Maybe you've uttered those words, yourself. In the middle of uncertain times, they can feel hollow and trite. But friends, there is absolute truth in those four words. God has a plan. We don't always see it. We don't always know how the pieces fit together. And in the middle of a pandemic, we can struggle to comprehend what part we play in that plan. Part of following Jesus is putting our trust, hope, and faith in something (someone) we can't see, but times of fear and uncertainty provide us with an opportunity to trust in the plan that God has for us today - and for the rest of our lives. Where do you run when fear strikes? When you’re scared, do you turn to a person - someone you trust or even an unhealthy relationship. Or do you find something positive like journalling, taking a walk, or deep breathing? Or maybe you turn to something like Netflix or alcohol to numb the pain. Maybe you don’t even recognize that you’re doing it. Friends, the world has given us endless options to deal with our emotions (some of them are valid and beneficial), but our true source of comfort only comes from God. And when you’re afraid, it’s OK to be open and honest about how you feel. It’s OK to scream and cry and express those intense emotions. It's OK to be lonely. It's OK to express loneliness. Let's not just say to people who are struggling with loneliness, "That's OK; God is with you." Yes, God is with you. Yes, His presence is comforting. But loneliness may not still be gone. If God's love is as immeasurable and unending as we read about in the Scriptures, then nobody, in the history of the world, understands rejection, sorrow, and disappointment more than God. Friends, our desire for connection is hard-wired into us by the creator of the universe, and the deep longing we have to be known and loved and connected to others is being challenged during this time.
