This self reading was done before a ritual bath to celebrate the end of mercury rx. A few choice observations: The Star is the shimmering moment after The Tower. One thing this particular deck has historically done for me is invert The Tower before transitioning to The Star. This shows that the destructive moment has passed and now it is time to shine from within the ashes. The Hierodule is this decks version of The Hierophant, it was actually the first time I've pulled it since buying this deck (the moment it came out 😄) and one particular bit that stands out is it doesn't simply allude to SW it names it outright and speaks of workings with the flesh. The sword piercing through the heart in the Five of Cups can seem daunting, but in this spread it is about a sacrifice one must make to level up. This could be a mindset of a memory, or a way of thinking that no longer serves this path. It is the post Tower cathartis. In life we must constantly make sacrifices, having control over what is a power move within itself. Both the Maiden and Ten of Pentacles have a lush emerald background, signifying monetary wealth cushioning the wealth of love and serenity. The maiden is also bursting with SW energy, typically we view maidens as "pure" and chaste, but they can also represent dedication to tasks or ideas. Seven years ago yesterday I stepped off a flight from Montreal onto the tarmac at Toussaint L'Ouverture International Airport in #portauprince, traveling then to the northwest of PaP to take on a deeper role in serving the #lwa. Looking back now and reflecting on the years since then I am amazed at how rich those years have been--I've experienced incredible growth in all areas of my life; loved with a rich depth most will never know and experienced disgusting betrayal to the same degree; found the miraculous blossoming consistently from the mud of the mundane; met and formed ties with some of the most amazing people you could imagine; acquired an unshakeable addiction to #haitianfood; married three of the most magnificent spirits; experienced epiphanies and apostasies; found my peace stolen and shattered and rebuilt it like a #kintsugi master; found the deeper blessings in service to others in conjunction with the lwa; known birth and death; and have found all the vast themes and motifs of the archetypal life expressed in this single, humble iteration I call my own, being therein a student of the art of living whose brush tries to mimic the classic strokes of the Old Masters. Shit has been real. During a brief conversation with a lovely soul today the topic of songs in #Vodou came up. We sing for everything, and each #lwa has their own songs. There are lots of reasons for this... Music moves the soul and accompanies dance like the sea accompanies the shore. They lift the soul, move they spirits, and facilitate their presence, making them integral to such service. Shared song is a fine methodology for creating a shared mental and spiritual space, which is essential in how public ceremonies operate. Songs are easily learned, and can therefore share information about a spirit or a practice well; there are songs to call upon the power of leaves, or to ask a spirit to hear our requests, to call them to come, sustain their presence, bid them farewell, and so on. But the importance of songs in this practice in Haiti has practical, mundane benefits too--current statistics tell us the literacy rate in Haiti is 61%. In 1982 it was under 38%. Shared songs provide a way of teaching about the Lwa, ceremony, and other cultural aspects in a population where public, free education doesn't exist, and therefore printed materials are of less value. This also helps to reinforce traditional Vodou forms of pedagogy in which we learn in conversation and observation. Songs get so deep into our minds that dementia patients who can't remember many important aspects of their lives can still be moved by, and often sing along with, songs they've known for many years. Music is the voice of God in our hearts. I spoke a little about music in Vodou in an interview recorded back in 2021.
