Trauma bonding is a strong emotional attachment that develops between a victim and their abuser. The bond is created via a cycle of abuse, where the abuser becomes a powerful source of validation and security; albeit false, and the victim can feel ‘addicted’ to their abuser. Deep feelings of connection and loyalty may be felt by the victim despite the level of abuse they endure. Dependency is fostered by the abuser blowing hot and cold, with the victim tolerating the lows to experience the honeymoon highs which may be in the form of love bombing. We can remain trauma bonded for many years, and whilst stepping away may be hard, it is not impossible. She's done it again!. In December last year, we were lucky to have Heather and her daughter Zoe drive down from their farm in the outback of New South Wales to Melbourne for the launch of "Never Underestimate A Woman- Part 1". Heather, interviewed by the wonderful Marisa Lawlor, bravely shared her personal experiences of domestic violence, living on a remote farm in the outback, isolated and trying to save her home and family post divorce. It was a confronting and at times brutal account of growing up and then marrying and living with it. Heather shares her incredible story to help other women to reshape their own narratives and transform their lives. And of course , it's a powerful read for our men and boys to know better, be better and do better. There's safety in solitude ❤️‍🩹 Ive found strength, self-awareness, and also a sense of safety ❤️ It hasn't always been this way, I use to feel so lonely when I was alone when I was younger. As I've gotten older I've learned to appreciate being alone, I no longer feel lonely when I'm alone I feel safe. My head used to be not a nice place, I've always been hard on myself, maybe because I've experienced a lot of tough love growing up. My inner critic really wasn't nice 💔 It's been incredibly hard to change and adapt. Probably one of the hardest things I've had to learn on my healing journey is to not be so horrible to myself. Be brave and be bold in front of what sets your soul on fire. For me that was FREEDOM. Freedom from the cage that my abuser had built around me. If you are living in a cage I want you to know that there is always a way out. It may not be with a key, it usually isn’t so easy and clean as that. Don’t be thwarted though. You can always find a way out, it may look nothing like you imagine it would be, so be open and on the lookout. We are not free until we are all free. Abuse does not end simply because a relationship does. Instead, it morphs into post separation abuse. A reality that far too many victims of abuse are unaware of and then blindsided by, as it often gets worse. When we truly understand that abuse is about power and control, and that a narcissistic abuser’s two greatest fears are abandonment and exposure, we can start to grasp why abuse doesn’t end just because the relationship does. The abuser still needs to feel powerful and dominant. To make you rue the day you ever left them, even if they cheated on you and discarded you in the worst possible way, you moving on smacks of abandonment. They view you as an investment: they’ve spent a lot of time and effort conditioning you into compliance and are angered that their property is no longer making themself available to them. So they will continue their abuse in various methods to keep you engaged to them. To not allow you to truly move on and fully heal. Parental Alienation: I Watched What Happened to My Father Happen to My Husband & It Broke Me *🔗 in bio “If you want to see a sane person act insane, take their children away from them for no reason at all.” -Kelley Baker, PhD. Malignant narcissists are experts at gaslighting and torturing people until they snap mentally and physically. They push people to the point of what is called reactive abuse (and then accuse the victim of being the abuser). In our situation all it took was her threatening to take Lee’s kids from him and never letting him see them again to push Lee over the edge mentally. I wasn’t there to witness what she said but I saw the aftermath. And what I witnessed was a man in pain, desperation, and unable to emotionally regulate himself but it looked kind of scary from an outsider’s perspective. Not because he is scary but because it’s something I didn’t have the skills to help him with. I tried to calm him down and love on him but nothing was going to stop his ex-wife from abusing him, keeping his kid’s from him, and making up narratives that he was the abuser. The ex-wife called the local police department after she gaslit Lee into a mental health crisis and Lee was charged with domestic violence after the incompetent police made the scenario fit a domestic violence narrative. Lee was arrested for domestic violence, a restraining order was placed on him so he couldn’t be near me, and he was once again homeless because of his ex-wife. You see, this didn’t start here. It started in the military with false accusations. Lee’s military commander and leaders sold him out instead of helping him through a difficult situation with an abusive woman who was completely unreasonable... She dragged out the divorce by being difficult, demanded more money even though she was living in free housing and had a good paying job, and threatened to tell lies to the military commander to control and hurt him, including accusing him of abusing her. On Domestic Violence Remembrance Day, we ask you all to take some time to remember the 34 women that have been murdered this year in Australia due to male violence 💜 This morning, we attended a court sentencing hearing where despite being found guilty of 9 offences, and a 5-year ADVO being served, no jail sentence was given. The Magistrate said that “domestic violence is abhorrent in all shapes and forms” and that “we’re sick of it as a community”. The first post for this page is a bit of a blank canvas. It’s a place I’ll share about the joys and frustrations about motherhood and you can too! I’m hoping it becomes a place we can all find connections and community in amongst the chaos. My intention is for it to be a judgement free and resourceful place to learn, lean and grow with each other through our parenting/mothering/healing journeys, because if I’ve learned one thing - we are all healing from something! No topics off limits, better out then in goes for more than just spit up and tantrums! I’ve received so many helpful tips from mums along the way so why not share them - like don’t buy a million different pairs of socks with different colours and designs - get lots of the same colour because the washing machine WILL eat them and you WILL look at a pile of 30 odd socks like WTF and cry 😳😂 Enough about socks About me - I had pregnancy loss prior to my Daughter, post natal anxiety and left a DV relationship while pregnant! Bringing home a newborn baby by myself was unexpected but I’m grateful now with a happy vivacious toddler! So I am a solo parent to a 3 year old girl and if my love for her grows any more I might actually explode. Yet somehow it does and we continue on! She is the biggest blessing and she’s teaching me so much about myself and life on the daily.
