Malden Public Library - 5.18.2024 1 - Statue of Whistler, outside Whistler House Art Museum 2 - Etchings by James M. Whistler 3 - *Yosemite Valley*, Thomas Hill 4 - *A Wood Interior*, Thomas Hill 5,6 - Converse Memorial Building 7 - Lowell National Historical Park, prop trolley Visited the charming Malden Public Library today, which houses an impressive collection of artworks, spanning the gamut of periods and styles. The Library building was funded by Malden's first mayor, Elisha Slade Converse, of the same family that later founded the Converse shoe company, and his wife Mary. Pictured are two works (3,4) in the gallery by Thomas Hill (he is also Norman Rockwell's maternal grandfather), who was loosely associated with the Hudson River School painters. Notably, the gallery featured works by Malden-native painters, including many paintings by the recently departed Frank Stella, and other abstract artists like Perle Fine and John Day. As an aside, the architect of the library, H. H. Richardson, also designed the Thomas Crane Public Library and Trinity Church in Boston, where he collaborated with renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. #art #photography #library #museum #Malden #conversememoriallibrary #hhrichardson #augustussaintgaudens #maldenpubliclibrary #thomashill #hudsonriverschool #abstract #historicsite #jameswhistler #whistleretchings #whistlerhousemuseumofart #museumofart #hhrichardsonarchitect
