Yesterday was an awesome day that I will always remember. Two years ago I started cosplaying as a hobby and attended my first con with a person who uses a wheelchair. The following day I attended with my husband who has mobility issues. The experience was fun however I noticed that large cons are exhausting when you’re attending with someone with a disability and that’s how I got here. The support from cosplayers met at those cons believed in the vision and helped make this event possible. The cosplayers that I met along the way at getting this event together contributed to the cause. Yesterday over 300 people showed up from Nashville to Galveston to experience a con just for them. It gets no better than this! People from over 20 states have asked when is the Disability Comic Com coming to their area and the answer is in the near future. One of my AUTISTIC reality checks Is it any wonder that the cumulative effects on an AUTISTIC person from the years of bullying, abuse, isolation, rejection and suspicion they will have undoubtedly endured from their fellow travellers on this rocky spaceship produces an individual who approaches every new situation with a wide-eyed deer caught in the headlights feeling of trepidation? The crusty veneer of emotional trauma adhering to the tightly woven fabric of learned self-deprecation is so enmeshed with our AUTISTIC personas that it is often hard to accurately identify where our AUTISTIC traits end and our trauma begins. The stultifying effects of this situation can have long-term implications not only for the mental well-being of the AUTISTIC individual but can also detrimentally impact employment prospects, career advancement and personal relationships. This often overlooked disabling aspect of the AUTISTIC experience which inextricably defines my personal journey is lost in the smothering of well-intentioned positivity which pervades much of the AUTISTIC narrative. It is imperative therefore that long-term a fully educated government led, legally binding strategic plan and measures be developed to enable late diagnosed AUTISTIC people to process their experiences, their present situations and their futures in order to gain some degree of traction in this world. Exciting news🥳 @propel.dance have become a community interest Company (CIC) and as part of that set up have incorporated us, Freewheelin Dance, into that organisation. Propel dance is ran by three directors, all with years worth of knowledge and hands on experience of putting on inclusive dance events. They are @amydaltonhardy, @clements_rosie and our very own dance teacher @helenrmason. They aim to create more dance opportunities for community adult dancers, children and professional wheelchair dancers, paving the way forward for a more inclusive dance world. What does this mean to us at Freewheelin? being part of a CIC means we can apply to funding which will create more training sessions, performances and opportunities to attend more dance competitions. As well as having links to a professional all wheelchair user dance company, including more training opportunities with the company and future performances with them. We’re really exciting to be a part of Propel Dance and strengthen the future of wheelchair dancing progression routes in the UK as well as building up inclusive dance as a whole. A few days back during an event by @climate_asia and @mariwalahealth I spoke about how the disabled and the most vulnerable section of society including women and elderly will suffer due to forest fires in the hills of Nainital and we can see it happening. The hills are burning, the air force and numerous people are trying to fight fire but the fire is spreading faster than it can be doused. We need a long term and a permanent solution to this problem. Climate change will impact people on the ground. Ich wünschte ich könnte euch eine Medaille präsentieren, aber leider habe ich im Finale über 100m Brust zu früh, zu offensiv attackiert und das Tempo auf den letzten Metern nicht halten können 😔 Das kann in einem Finale passieren. Am Ende steht Platz 6. Es ist natürlich sehr ärgerlich, aber auch hier hat mein Team zahlreiche Erkenntnisse bekommen. Immer positiv sehen, auch wenn es weh tut 🙂 Außerdem habe ich schon oft solche Momente erlebt, aus denen ich gestärkt herausgekommen bin! Trotzdem war das eine großartige Europameisterschaft von mir. Sehr starke Leistungen über 100m Schmetterling, 200m Lagen und 100m Brust im Vorlauf stimmen mich sehr positiv. Platz 4, knapp am Podium vorbei. Platz 5 sehr stark. Und leider der enttäuschende 6. In the early part of last year, I found myself in Alice Springs, located in the heart of Australia. During my time there, I had the opportunity to capture breathtaking aerial photographs of the magnificent landscapes. While I was there. The “St Kilda (KIIS EYE)” team who runs the ferris wheel followed me, and today I was able to capture the Ferris wheel with a wonderful sunset using my drone for the closing night. On a night as incredible as tonight, it just proves how beautiful our country is. My disability doesn’t stop me from working, traveling, and seeing the world. The @neowalksticks was VERY popular at @zincbanbury last night. I managed to climb the stairs using my stick and the staff stored my chair in a safe place. That's how you make the seemingly inaccessible, accessible! It's not all about step free access. Another great 👍🏻 for accessibility last night was the door staff at @alsoknownas_banbury who cleared a path for me to get through the crowded bar to a table with my friends and again on the way back out. @thewinevaults door staff were also very helpful making sure the doors were open and I had room to get in. I've not been out on a busy night for many, many years. I was nervous how I would navigate the busy venues. My @rapone.official ear plugs were a God send! Coventry Spring Meet 2024 As usual a rainy day in Coventry but still an enjoyable day of racing with an international field. While my times weren’t great in the 100m and 400m I’m happy with where I placed. I had a 16 second PB in the 1500m, though I’d only done it once before on a very bad track. Last days of Yucky at @ace.gallery.adelaide the exhibition ends 4th May. It's been phenomenal to be a part of this show. When I was at university I used to go into ACE and hope that one day I would be showing there. I'm so proud to be exhibiting alongside such talented artists and in a show with such an incredible concept. . Being seen this way as someone with bipolar disorder, it's very emotional. I find it validating. I'm going to be honest, when I was first approached about being included in this show I did wonder if I was 'disabled enough' to be in it. I had to push those thoughts aside and say, well the lead artist certainly thinks so, and the curator thinks so. It's a weird and frankly an internalised ableism thing really. As someone who struggled to get diagnosed in the first place, it's really nice to be able to not only embrace it but to show others what it's like for me. . 🦻🏻It’s been a year since I had my surgery for my cochlear implant. Here’s some little facts/stories about this journey. . - sounds aren’t how they were before. Voices are different, music is different too. . It takes lots of therapy to learn how to hear again. I still have one hour per week to help my brain recognize sounds. . - if there’s a loud annoying sound I can just take my implant off! 😂 . - If you touch the area of my implant, you can feel there’s something underneath my skin. . - I’m still not completely confortable having to tell people I’m deaf. . - hearing doesn’t hurt but sometimes having the implant pushing on my ear hurts a bit. . - I can hear and understand someone better if there’s no music or sounds around us. . - i have a little mic that is connected to my implant to understand people better. . - I can connect my implant to my iPad. It’s like an air pod but it’s in my head! That’s pretty cool. . - I can hear my cats meowing, cars passing, birds singing, the wind, my breathing, a door closing and so much more! There’s stuff I forgot made sounds actually.

Tiene mucho que ver con la actitud con la que uno enfronta las limitaciones: O decides negarte a pensar que “no puedes” , o intentas y te das cuenta que en realidad hay tantas posibilidades por delante. Tener esa mente abierta, me ha llevado a hacer cosas y llegar a lugares que jamás pensé que llegaría. Tengo, además, un grupo de seres maravillosos que me empujan a lograr mis metas y me ayudan en los momentos que más los necesito (amigos, familia, ustedes saben quienes son). These past 48 hours or so have felt like a blur & I feel a little broken. The physical pain I have endured has been incredibly tough to see past & I've been genuinely frightened for my body. Emotionally I've had no strength to pick myself up & reassure myself that everything will be okay as I normally would; I'm such a positive person but even I couldn't mask this torture with a smile. I have been so lucky to have my husband home with me (he literally hasn't left my side 🥲) & to have my medical team only a call away has been a great comfort to us both. We still don't have a clear path moving forward as my situation has become so complex, but my team have come together & are planning further surgery; I find out in a couple of weeks what this operation will mean for me. In Italia, le classi differenziali erano delle classi scolastiche destinate ad alunni disabili o affetti da disturbi dell'apprendimento o problemi di socializzazione. Le prime classi differenziali furono create all'inizio del XX secolo. La logica di separazione sottesa dal sistema delle classi e delle scuole differenziali venne aspramente criticata in una lotta sostenuta dai movimenti del Sessantotto, al punto che gli stessi operatori delle scuole differenziali spinsero i genitori degli alunni a tentare l'accesso alla scuola "normale". La legge 517 del 4 agosto 1977 abolì le classi differenziali,(art 7 co. 10) individuando forme più articolate di integrazione. Lo stesso principio fu alla base della successiva legge 104 del 5 febbraio 1992 che pone al centro l'integrazione e la creazione di un progetto di vita per il disabile che ne privilegi l'autonomia. I posted in our stories last week about how we took Mikaere to see a lot of cars. That’s not exactly the whole truth. We were travelling to see family and part of the problem we have is that our boy can’t just use any toilet. We need a changing places facility, with a hoist and a changing table capable of holding his weight. This isn’t an easy thing to find and requires an intense amount of research before going anywhere. (Just for clarification, it’s estimated there are over 80 million toilets in the UK. There are only 2000 changing places facilities). This museum (the British Motor Museum) has one, funded by @musculardystrophyuk (thank god for them). This museum was about half way, had a changing places facility, a cafe that serves gluten free food (for Sam) and is aligned with our toddlers interests. Hallelujah! If researching where you can go to the toilet before you leave the house is not something you need to do, please know that is a privilege not everyone has. It’s NKH Awareness Day next week.
