What a lot of people tend to forget is that there is a difference between being accessible (I.E wheelchair access, disabled toilets, disabled hotel rooms, etc) and being inclusive (welcoming disabled people into the space, ensuring that their needs are met) Just because you are accessible - doesn’t automatically equate to inclusive. Michael is a truly interesting character on this topic, please go give it a listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or watch with full captions on YouTube. ALT TEXT: a green background with a picture of Michael in a winter clothes with a hat and a scarf in his electric wheelchair. Embraced Body believes this is absolutely necessary! Representation is so important and being reflected in the media matters for disabled people! We want to see more varied representations of different types of disabled people that don't rely on ableist tropes and ideas. Also - big pet peeve - disabled actors should be cast for disabled roles!! Disabled community members and access consultants should also be consulted to ensure accurate representation and portrayals of disabled experience and disabled community! #DanceForAllAbilities #RepresentationMatters #DisabilityJustice #BlackDisability #DisabilityCommunity #DisabilityInclusion #BlackAndDisabled #DisabilityPride #Ableism . . . April is Autism Awareness Month and Invacare community blogger, @meanderingpark says she wants acceptance, not awareness. -- As an Autistic person, I’m calling for Autism acceptance, not awareness in April. Why? Because awareness - “Be aware! Here be Autistics!” - makes us out to be creatures to be avoided. Whereas accepting Autism – “Rejoice! Here be Autistics!” – requires understanding and inclusion. How do we achieve Autism acceptance? First is understanding what Autism is (it's a type of brain), how it influences functioning (thinking, feelings, sensations, movement), and what the needs of Autistic people are (low sensory environments, visual supports, brain and movement breaks, literal communication, patience with question-asking, etc). For a deeper dive, check out @reframing_autism and @yellowladybugs_autism. Next, acceptance that the Autistic brain is different to the neurotypical brain. This sounds obvious. However, when I tell people that I’m Autistic, a common response is – “we’re all a little bit Autistic” or “we are all somewhere on the spectrum”. No! You can’t have a little bit of an Autistic brain any more than you can be a little bit pregnant. The Autistic brain is wired differently from the neurotypical brain. The hardest thing for most people to accept is that Autistic adults have Autistic access needs that are real and valid. An online troll has asked me if I expect “special treatment?” While I don’t expect a red carpet, I know that the standard neurotypical treatment doesn’t allow me to fully participate in the community. That’s unfair. For example, I requested that a local swimming pool stop playing loud pop music all the time, everywhere. My request was denied because “staff enjoy the party atmosphere”, as if I was a party-pooper. However, their loud music was so draining and disruptive to my Autistic brain that I had to stop using the pool. I need people to accept that my Autistic need for low-sensory environments is just as vital to my participation as my need for ramps when I’m using my mobility scooter. For Autism Acceptance Month, I ask you to understand, respect and include Autistic-me.

Today in Disability April, Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month Guest Post by Emma I received a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder when I was in college. Autism is a developmental disability characterized by differences in social communication and “restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities.” Me being autistic may be related to some of my strengths, like my attention to detail, curiosity, and passion for justice.  With Autism Awareness Month, I think about how it is not uncommon for females without co-occurring intellectual disabilities to be diagnosed with autism when they are older. A diagnosis can help increase understanding and can facilitate access to supports. This Autism Acceptance Month, I’ve been thinking of ways that people in my life make the world more welcoming for me: -Letting me know beforehand if an event will have loud noises. -Friends letting me know what to expect at social events, and sharing their perspectives on the social world.  -A special interest of mine is cats, and I have human friends who welcome me to hang out with their cats.  -Housing and academic accommodations during college.

I’m just getting out of survival mode. For three full years, I spent every moment of every day in a state of fight or flight. Constantly consumed by thoughts of my inevitable ending… Always waiting for the next bad scan or phone call. But life has moved forward and it has taken me with it. Now, I watch my wife garden. I read books about parenting. I do crossword puzzles. I have slowed down because I wanted to, not because my body forced me. & suddenly, it has occurred to me: I’m not afraid anymore. I’m alive. ♥️ #queertravel #disabledtravel #chronicillnessawareness #disabilitypride #spooniecommunity

💘♿️🥰 -.-.-.-. #disability #disabilityawareness #disabilità #scuola #scuolainclusiva #schoolinclusion #disabilityrights #disabilityinclusion #disabilitypride #inclusione #inclusioneducativa #inclusionesociale #diversity #dirittiumani #convenzioneonu #accessibility #disabilitymanager #lex4all

Happy #internationaldanceday . I cannot quite believe that this wonderful art form has been in my life for 21 years…it has always been a form of self expression for me, and has helped me through some of the sadder times in my life. There have been challenges along the way and sometimes I thought about what could or might have been, but now I don’t. I know that things turned out much differently than I expected but that was for a reason ♿️🙏❤️. I have been so lucky with the training that I had both @royalballetschool and then after acquiring my disability @clarendonsixth @ardendance @the_arden . In the nearly four years (cannot believe how fast time has flown 😱), since I graduated I have had different opportunities of working with some truly lovely organisations @royaloperahouse @alexandercampbellproductions @gdifestival @northernballet @southpawcompany @childrentodaycharity @bbodance @nationalyouthballet_ofgb just to name a few. So this international dance day I am feeling grateful for all that has been and is hopefully still to come, as well as the inclusive steps made for more people to engage in dance, with more still to be done 👀🤞. I am also delighted to share that I will be returning to @northernballet Expressions in July to lead a second CPD session on inclusive strategies in ballet for all dance teachers. More information in my bio 🩰♿️. I feel so grateful and fortunate and hope to continue to make the most of everything 🙏❤️. 📸: @julesrphotography (Passionately Defiant) and @dancephotographeruk (Snow Queen) #freelancer #disability #disabilitypride #disabled #disabledinstagram #choreography #wheelchair #wheelchairlife #wheelchairinstagram #classicaldancer #ballet #instadaily #dancer #dancerlife #maledancer #worldwideballet #worldwidedancer #dancersofinstagram #dreambig #aspiretoinspire #access #inclusion #bbodance #patron #NYB #Ambassador #STEPPS #Trustee #throwback

It’s time for the first Chronic Health Chronicles Story Time! Today, I’m talking about mobility aids. I have ME/CFS, POTS, Fibro, etc. After having Covid x3, my health is on a downward slope, and I’ve recently realized that I need a mobility aid if I’m going to leave my house and, you know, do things. As someone on disability with a fixed income, I am dependent on disability to pay for this. Recently, I took the first step in this process by having an assessment with a physiotherapist to determine what I will need. For weeks leading up to the appointment, I worried about it - what if the therapist thought I was a hypochondriac? What if they said there was nothing wrong with me and I didn’t need help? The imposter syndrome was running strong, and I felt almost powerless, resigned to the fate of someone who absolutely would not be taken seriously, regardless of how I experience my life and disability. The assessment was the most validating medical appointment I have ever had. While it was an unpleasant reality check with regards to my health, it was also so empowering. To have a medical practitioner listen to me, fully, and take what I said about how I experience life into consideration was such a rush of validation that I had big emotions after the appointment. Initially, I was resistant to the idea of using a mobility aid, but I’ve come around. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life unable to leave my house because I think I don’t need or DESERVE to have access to life. I know that the times I’ll be able to get out may be limited, but honestly, it will be better than where I’m at now. I will continue to post progress updates as I navigate this journey! #wheelchair #wheelchairlife #wheelchairuser #mecfsfighter #mecfslife #mecfsrecovery #mecfswarrior #mecfsawareness #mecfs #disabilitypride #disabilityinclusion #disabilitysupport #disability #chronichealthchronicles #chronicillnessproblems #chronicillnesses #chronicillnesscommunity #chronicillnesshumor #chronicillnesssupport #chronicillnesslife #chronicillnessmemes #chronicillnesswarrior #chronicillnessawareness #chronicillness #DisabilityCommunity #disabilitylife #disabilityrights #disabilityawareness

I really miss the predictability of life when you’re healthy. I miss knowing I’ll feel well enough to do what I want and/or need to do. I wish I didn’t have to just do the “necessities.” I wish I could do what I need to do AND what I want to do all in the same day. But my body doesn’t typically work that way. My body is very limited energy-wise. My battery is easily drained. I have to pace myself. And what doesn’t drain me fast one day may drain me really quickly the next day, which is confusing because then how am I supposed to plan or know how to pace myself…? Just some thoughts about predictability and unpredictability on a Monday morning. Let me know your thoughts on this in the comment section! . . Whether it’s hearing aids, cochlear implants, assistive listening devices, or another solution - there are so many incredible options to help people with hearing loss or differences connect to the world around them. This empowering message. It celebrates the fact that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to hearing technology. Each person’s needs, preferences, and lifestyle are unique. These innovative devices open up a world of possibilities. They empower individuals to communicate, learn, and engage more fully - on their own terms. No more limitations or barriers, just the freedom to experience life to the fullest. To anyone exploring hearing solutions, know that you have choices. Work closely with your audiologist or hearing specialist to find the right fit. And remember, your hearing is yours to own. Amplify it in the way that works best for you! #hearingloss #hearingimpaired #deafcommunity

Hi Dahlings! How was your weekend? I hope it was filled with joy, relaxation, and positivity. Today, I want to share with you a motivational Monday quote by the incredible Sinead Burke. Sinead Burke is a remarkable individual who has made a significant impact in the fashion industry and beyond. She is a disability rights activist, a writer, and a force to be reckoned with. Sinead is a true inspiration, using her platform to advocate for inclusivity, diversity, and accessibility. These words from Sinead Burke are a powerful reminder that each and every one of us has a unique voice and perspective that is valuable and worthy of being heard. We often find ourselves trying to conform to societal expectations or mold ourselves into someone else's idea of success. But Sinead reminds us that our true power lies in embracing our authentic selves and celebrating our individuality. Not all disabled lives are linear with each other and we don’t need or want society to attach a sad soundtrack to our lives to make those that Disable us feel better. We are not your inspiration p*rn! In a world that tends to celebrate conformity, it takes courage to be true to ourselves and express our thoughts, ideas, and passions. Sinead's quote encourages us to break free from the chains of comparison and self-doubt, and to embrace our own unique journey. By doing so, we not only find fulfillment but also inspire others to do the same. So, my lovely Dahlings , let's take a moment today to reflect on Sinead Burke's powerful words. Let's embrace our voices, our dreams, and our individuality. Let's challenge the status quo and make a positive impact in our own unique way. Remember, the world needs your voice. Don't be afraid to let it be heard. She did it! 🎉 Let me tell you about my friend natalietrevonne She told me she wanted to host a brunch for creative women but wasn’t sure how to go about doing it. And then she organized one and we all couldn’t wait for the next one. She told me she wanted to host an inclusive fashion show. It happened. She told me she wanted to design a fashion brand focused on textures based on her own experience as a blind woman. And she did it! Talk about someone who speaks her dreams into existence. So proud of you Natalie and honored I got to celebrate with you ❤️ wearnyi designs are now available for pre-order! Congrats Natalie and her co-founder ernestfspicer on the launch 🔥 #KeepBlooming23 #NYI #NotYourInspiration #DisabledJoy #DisabilityPride Image descriptions: 1. 🧡 Monday Musings ✨ 🌞 Good morning! 🔸I look forward to most Mondays - it's a chance of RE-setting and starting over again. Forgetting about last week's struggles but being powered by the past week's WINS. 🔸On some Mondays, I wake up exhausted due to #chronicillness and overwhelmed because of my #neurodiversity 🤍 Today is the latter and thus, time for some strong motivation! ✨Your power to choose your direction of your life allows you to reinvent yourself, to change your future, and to powerfully influence the rest of creation.✨ - Stephen Covey 🔸 Living with #disability and #chroniccondition can be a dark and lonely place - everything is difficult and comes at a price of #flareup 🦾 BUT! That's an even stronger reason to NEVER GIVE UP! 🧠 Open your mind to unusual ideas and possibilities! 🦾 Focus on WHAT CAN YOU DO! Do Not Conform! Live YOUR Life! ❓If you use mobility aids, chances are this is a question you encounter on a weekly, sometimes daily basis? Having used and sold walking aids for 18 years, we have learned no matter how hard we try this question will still sometimes catch us off guard 🙈 Whilst sometimes I’m super happy to chat, there are other times when I really would rather not and as a result, I’ve learnt some quick tips for the times I don’t fancy a trip down medical history lane ✔️ For those moments when you’re caught off guard or just don’t feel like explaining, swipe to see are our top three tips ♥️ Have you been asked this question before? Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and engaged in the moment, aware of your thoughts and feelings without distraction or judgment. It involves a conscious direction of our awareness. We return to the present moment rather than letting our mind drift, and instead of dwelling on the past or imagining the future, we stay attentive to what’s happening right now. This can also extend to being aware of our environment, our bodily sensations, the thoughts and emotions that come and go. #NDIS #dacexpo #disabilitypride #disabilityawareness #disabilityrights #disabled #wheelchair #disabilityrights #wheelchairlife #disabilityadvocate #disabilityinclusion #disabilitypride #accessibility #inclusionmatters #wheelchairuser #disabilitysupport #cerebralpalsy #abilitynotdisability #sydney #NSW #envisionhealthcare

It’s from one Pride month to another for me as today marks the start of Disability Pride Month, the Pride month you’ve likely never heard of! We don’t hear much about Disability Pride month across the media, as disability is still often seen as being ‘the worst thing that could ever happen to you’ by so many, a tragedy in some people’s eyes. But, as I frequently tell the strangers in the street who pray I’ll get better one day; ‘I have a great life!’. This month I’m reflecting on the fact that against all odds I’ve built myself my dream career, in an inaccessible industry. Getting my first west end job this year was such a big milestone not only for me, but for everyone who believes there isn’t space in theatre for them. I really hope other disabled people saw my photo on the side of the theatre and believed that it could be them too. For now, I’m ready for a month of unashamedly taking up space, of not apologising for who I am or what I need, and generally being a badass disabled gal 💁🏻‍♀️ 📸: captured.by.liz #DisabilityPrideMonth #DisabilityPride #Disability #Disabled #DisabledAndProud #DisabledPhotographer #Wheelchair #Powerchair

This is no more true than saying that a broken leg is a sign of weakness. Mental health disorders are illnesses, not signs of poor character. Similarly, people with, for instance, depression, cannot “snap out of it” any more than someone with diabetes or psoriasis can immediately recover from their condition. #lovebundy #ndisprovider #disabilitysupport #disabilityservices #disabilitycommunity #disabilitycare #ndis #ndisregisteredprovider #carer #ndissupport #myndis #abilitynotdisability #disabilityisnotinability #disabilityawareness #disability #inclusion #disabilityadvocate #disabilityinclusion #inclusionmatters #disabilityrights #disabilitylife #iamadaptive #accessibility #diversity #disabilitypride #inclusionrevolution #ability #accessible #disabilityjustice #disabilityactivism

✨️ Fantasy books with chronically ill characters ✨️ QOTD: Tell me the last indie novel you read! In the past, I've had a hard time finding stories set in fantasy worlds that are led by chronically ill characters. It's so disappointing to come across a fantasy that magically heals its disabled/ill characters, and so I'm always searching for positive representation of chronic illness in fantasy worlds. From the Temple of Delphi to the English countryside, these unique stories have phenomenal representations of chronic illnesses alongside heartfelt plots and characters you won't forget! 💛 Featured books: • Road of Stars and Flame by @authorbonniecallahan • Follow Me to the Yew Tree by @author_dmniccoli • Against the Grain by @melhardingshaw #bookstagrammer #bookworm #booknerd #currentlyreading #bookreviewer #indiebooks #indieauthor #indieromance #indiefantasy #diversebooks #diversifyyourshelf #chronicallyill #chronicillness #spoonie #celiacdisease #migraines #chronicmigraines #ulcerativecolitis #disabilityrepresentation #disabledandcute #disabilitypride
