very excited to be showing a piece of work, 'root below', in @raleighunitedmutualaidhub's upcoming show, @honoringwhatremains. the show is focused on creative work made with found, recycled, reused and discarded materials. there's also a wonderful lineup of workshops that all look amazing, and i really wish i could attend! my partner @sleopoldsullivan also has a piece in the show (very exciting)! @honoringwhatremains runs from may 3rd to 12th. with a reception on may 4th from 5-8pm at @raleighunitedmutualaidhub. i have a complex relationship to this part of north carolina, having lived & worked there for a fair chunk of my twenties. that was a very complicated time in my life, but it's also the period where i see my current creative practice starting to take shape, more than any other time in my life. i became very involved in mail art at that time, maintaining a post office box in downtown raleigh for a few years, looking for trash on street corners, making stuff out of whatever i found. mail art brought me to collage in a more sustained way, and was a massive turning point for me creatively; the privacy afforded by a post office box was a respite from a highly surveilled home life, and ultimately helped me find a way to leave the abusive relationship i was in. it was freedom, and the experimentation of mail art also helped me to heal a chaotic, anxious, overcritical and perfectionistic relationship to my creative work. i haven't shown anything in north carolina since i left nearly a decade ago, and it is really exciting to be part of this exhibition. super meaningful. my time in north carolina taught me a lot about coalition building, community care and movement work, and what @raleighunitedmutualaidhub is doing is incredible! if you're in the area, i hope you'll stop by!
