🪦 Richard Laymon - In The Dark Review: For April's book choice decided by the Laymon bookclub was 'In The Dark' published in 1994 and I must begin by saying what a treat this novel ended up becoming! Local Librarian, Jane Kerry starts to receive letters from the mysterious 'MOG' who sets various challenges with rewarded large sums of cash, Jane agrees and enters the game with new befriended Brace by her side. But as the money gradually gets larger and larger, the tasks become more dangerous and stranger, putting Jane and Brace at serious risk... I have to say that even though the storyline may sound fairly simple, it works brilliantly as it keeps the flow going at an exciting pace. With the plot thickening, it gets more sinister and gory later on which is classic Laymon but done more clever than some of his other works. The characters were great too even though there were only a few major ones, Jane herself comes across as greedy and selfish at times but everybody has flaws which made her seem more believable, she came across better towards the conclusion. My only criticism was the ending felt slightly rushed without much detailing, but this was also a fairly thick novel so there would be a risk of dragging. This was a fantastic Richard Laymon book and yes, it is one I shall return to again one day. Rating: 9/10 • • • • 🪦 • • • •
