Many years ago, I used to live in West Didsbury. In what was once a Blockbuster Video (remember those?) now resides @midori.didsbury at @wineandwallopdidsbury Midori brings the taste and home-style cuisine of Hokkaido, Japan, to Manchester. Using her grandmother’s recipes and wrapping techniques, Midori specialises in plump, juicy gyoza that burst with flavour. Each gyoza is filled with quality, locally-sourced ingredients without the additives. To say that Midori can quickly wrap a gyoza is an understatement. While I took these photos I only had to blink and the parcels were nimbly folded and squeezed to encase the delicious contents. Midori makes hundreds of gyoza each week, and you can tell. They all look perfect. The gyoza are cooked simply in a pan with water that evaporates and creates a beautiful golden colour on one side. Midori cooked these gyoza using an additional pinch of cornflour to create a crisper side at the end of the cook. Plated with garnishes of spring onion, crispy onions, and black sesame seeds the gyozas look and smell absolutely wonderful. And if that’s not enough to make you salivate, Midori offers various accompaniments including an outrageously spicy and flavoursome chili crisp oil. I could take that with just about anything it’s so good. Here are some photos of Midori doing her thing. I can’t recommend these gyoza highly enough and I will be back soon to try more from the menu. So by now you should know that I love a roast dinner and would be happy to eat one everyday if I could. Well this was meant to be yesterday's dinner but the day got away from me. So what better day to have a roast on, the sun has been out all day with a nice breeze in the air and still shiiiiiining on into the Tuesday evening. Bread sauce and stuffing accompanying the veg back four, a solid performance from the creamy mash and hitting the ground running upfront are the massive Yorkshire puddings. Red currant jelly had a small but vital role to play when it came on later in the second half. HEAVILY inspired by @kalememaybe Hot Honey Halloumi bowl I’ve just skipped the lentils and as Tesco did not have hot honey, I opted for @encona.sauces Jalapeño Chilli Jam which was a delicious substitute. I defy anyone to say a word against a roasted radish. Massively underrated all over the place. Lemon and dill yogurt on top of the rocket, punches of flavour all over the plate.
📍 Blues Kitchen, MCR @theblueskitchenmcr Look at that spread 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 we decided not to have a main each and order a variety of dishes off the small plates and sides instead and I looooove dining like this ♥️ We had… 🍗 Buffalo chicken wings 🦑 Crispy squid 🌽 Corn ribs 🥦 Tenderstem broccoli 🌶️ Crispy cauliflower with spicy mayo 🥑 Avocado tostada 🧀 Mac and cheese This was such a great order, we had a bit of everything - pretty much covered all food groups 😏 The buffalo wings were crispy, spicy but not too saucy which I love - I do not need buffalo sauce all over my face in a restaurant 🙅🏼♀️ and the blue cheese sauce to go with was so creamy too! The Mac and cheese was SO creamy and cheesy, the crispy, hard cheese on the top was just cheese heaven 🧀🤤 the crispy cauliflower was super good too, thick pieces of cauliflower paired with a delicious spicy mayo! But the standout for me was the corn ribs, cooked to absolute perfection and covered in a delicious coating, loved them 🤩 and the squid was some of the best I’ve had, not skimpy tiny pieces that are mostly just batter, meaty with a delicious batter 😍 This was my first time at @theblueskitchenmcr but it won’t be my last! @connis_mcr is the definition of a family-owned business—a Neapolitan family that doesn’t know the meaning of the word impossible. I was so lucky to witness the creation of Conni’s Pizzeria. I was lucky to witness how a family that believes everything is possible dealt with the thousands of issues that arose since the beginning of the works back in December. I have been taught the meaning of the Neapolitan expression “l’arte di arrangiarsi,” or in English, “the art of figuring it out.“ No designers and no construction team, just Bernardo Marchese who, for the last four months, after eight hours of work, spent his evenings creating what I would call a masterpiece if we are taking the resources into consideration. A family led by a guy in his early 20s with an imagination without limits, he never stopped believing in this project, even in the hardest times when people started to doubt him. The goal was to bring in Manchester the real Neapolitan pizza. It is still early days, but whoever had the opportunity to try it described it as the best pizza in town.
