Hot Takes: How do you keep from melting a rocket engine with all that fire blasting out? In fact, the heat of a rocket engine is so much it will melt any of the metals we know how to make. But with some ingenuity, they figured out a trick a long time ago that I think is interesting. I got to visit the US Space and Rocket Center not long ago and this time shared the experience with my wife. Thanks honey for wanting to go there so that I got to visit it again! It's kind of nice visiting a place more than once and be able to get some of the pictures that didn't come out so well the first time. Though I'll admit, when I get to the place, I need to be better prepared as my mind went mostly blank except for a couple of them as to what I found I was missed while editing previous pics. Oh well, it's fun to see a place again regardless. So how did they make the engine work? It's a well known method, but I still like it. They sent some of "cold" fuel down the outside of the engine bell which soaked up enough of the heat to keep it below the metal's melting point. In the 2nd pic you see the lines going down the bell. It's actually made of "pipes" that open at the bottom which is what you see close up on end in the first pic. I love great engineering and the patterns they make. Sunshine Bridge: Part of sharing my pics is sharing the story behind it. This story starts 2 years ago when I made a solo whirlwind journey around the southern USA. That included Louisiana where I came upon this bridge. But I was in a rush (as usual), it had been a long day of driving, and I was tired, so surprise - I did NOT take a picture. But I regretted that. Especially when some time since then I saw a similar pic to this from someone I follow and I was like, "I know that place! I should have taken that picture!" So forward to this year when this time my wife and I were driving from Texas up to Nashville. We decided to go a bit east first, partly to let me share a few places with her from my 2022 trip. So when we came near this place, I hemmed and hawed about making this detour, but decided I didn't want to regret missing the picture again. Life is full of too many regrets as it is, so now I try to minimize them. As we crossed the bridge from the other side to get this shot, little did we realize there was now construction which led to a traffic jam. So my quick little detour turned into a 1/2 -1 hour ordeal. Was it worth it? Well, I got my pic so no regrets this time. I went b&w because it was quite overcast and frankly, this just makes a much better picture. I've now learned it's the Sunshine Bridge, was called a bridge to nowhere, and was once the only bridge across the Mississippi river between Louisiana and Baton Rouge. Politics, controversy, and big money surround it. All the same, I just like how it stands high above the flat countryside. Apr '24 . Big Picture: The other day a business associate was visiting our area and he started out by saying, "I've just got 2 words.... Cherry Blossoms." Of course there are many places around the world not the least of which is Japan that is known for their cherry blossoms, but if you don't have them around, they really are a spectacular sight when in full bloom. This year the plums and the cherries not to mention the different varieties of each bloomed very separately due to the weather. So we had a double showing of blossoms with a break in between. It's been kind of nice throughout this season, especially for me who has been out of town quite a bit during it. I was always glad to come back and find that I hadn't missed the whole show. I shot this pic almost a month ago when I was going near the state capitol so I decided to stop by and get a few pics. One problem with my big camera is I don't own a super wide lens for it, so when I need to get the "big picture" (as in this case) I still pull out my cell phone. Overall, my DSLR is definitely better - mostly when you want to enlarge the image or actually enhance it beyond the built in enhancing which is where most of the image quality comes from on the cells.
