Eating…it’s the last thing I want to do. Today marks one week since I picked up some nefarious stomach bug that my niece brought home from school. It started off as a mystery. Was it a bout of food poisoning from the pizza I picked up for the kids (did the cashier handle the money AND the pizza🤔)? Was it the ribs and rice I craved from from a local spot I hadn’t been to in a while? Or was it just another one of my rotating chronic illnesses? After a nightmarish ride home, with several upchuck stops along the way, a near all day stint at the local Urgent Care (my third one this month), and a call home to Mom, I then find out everyone else at the house had gotten sick. The culprit? Jenny. According to my niece, her newly inseparable BFF, was sent home for allegedly “losing her lunch” in art class. In the days that followed, empty chairs popped up all over the classroom as parents called in sick notices for more children. During the pandemic, it became very clear to us how connected we all really are. How a three hour drive could connect me to 3rd grade Jenny and the purple Olivia Rodrigo T-shirt she ruined that day, to Nurse Marjorie with the “feel good medicine” and the IV bag that brought me back to life, and to the memory of this old roadside eatery in the small river town of Arlington, Oregon. It’s a place that holds traditions close, and the heavenly milkshakes from Pat’s Pheasant Grill even closer — at least that’s what I hear. On this day, it was closed, but the pheasant’s beady eyes continued to glow a bright neon red, even in the harsh glare of the afternoon sun. I saw an original menu for sale online. The Sunday Dinner offerings were dated July 8, 1956. I didn’t see anything over $4 dollars on there. At those prices, we could easily sample the entire menu! Just not yet…I’ll need to start slow. Maybe a cup of chicken noodle soup, followed by that delicious-sounding homemade strawberry shortcake cake (yes, I usually like my dessert BEFORE dinner ☺️🍰). Well, one can only dream of cheap dinner dates and, in my case, just plain eating again. Stay healthy, my friends, and guard your bellies…there are Jennys everywhere! 👀🤷🏼♀️🍕🤢🩺🗺️🚙✨

Kentucky Maze: Modern art or ancient patterns? The answer in this case is ancient patterns - or maybe I also see it as modern art. Perhaps the two aren't so different as we might think. This is a look down on a model of the labyrinth of passages that make up part of Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, USA. It is the longest known cave system in the world. Each branch of the model represents a scale tunnel or passage winding through the earth. Overlapping, forking, twisting, up and down, and back again. But I like the organic nature of the lines and the design it makes. Kind of like a mosaic of frame of some modern sculpture. Or maybe it's like looking at clouds or a some sort of Rorschach ink blot test, what do you see in this? Photographically, I was looking for a way to shoot this more for the art than what it really was. Since most people would see this more from the side, I decided to put the camera over it and shoot straight down. Just something I do with my pics. Apr '24 .
