Followed the replay of @katie_moody’s latest zoom session today while creating these two pieces. While the session itself was a lot of fun and I had been quite intrigued by the idea to go in and explore the interplay of different media from my stash I soon felt that while my mind was really motivated to draw my body totally wasn’t. For whatever reason I felt an inner reluctance to actually hold a pen or a brush and physically draw or paint, which clearly reflects in the paintings. However, I guess this, too, is part of an everyday sketchbook challenge so I’m not holding back to share todays pieces (which otherwise I’d probably would). Today I followed the replay of @natashanewtonart’s and @kriksisart’s latest zoom session and chose to paint this cute little woodpecker using Flashe paints and colored pencils. It was a timed session and we had 30 minutes to paint the bird, but I invested some more time in this piece afterwards (slide to the last pic in this collection to see how far I got in 30 minutes). Although I think I could have given him a bit more fluff in the wing I’m really happy with the outcome. I had a lot of fun joining this session (even as a replay) and I really hope I can make it live one day. For today’s sketchbook practice I’m joining week 15 of @drawdailytogether following a reference photo by @smidovalucia. I’ve worked with a wax resist technique to for the delicate veins in the leaves. I really love the structured, slightly imperfect look it gives for this piece but found it hard to lay down the fine lines with my rather blunt wax crayon. I wish I had some waxy pencil with a sharper point for images like these. I followed the replay of @katie_moody’s livestream while working on this piece. It’s based on one of the reference photos of her trip to Japan, which she shared with her patreons. It wasn’t a reference Katie worked on in her stream, but it was a photo I was drawn to right away when I saw it and I absolutely had to work with it. In the meantime, I took a bit of inspiration from the tips Katie gave for simplifying complicated scenes. I concentrated mainly on the bridge and the foreground in my piece and softened most of what was going on far behind. For the most part, I think I’ve been successful with my approach, although I wish I’d have managed to create a more visible contrast at the shoreline of the river (or is it a lake?). Here’s my sketchbook entry from last Friday showing a little hut / former dog house in my parents’ garden. I’m only sharing this piece today because I couldn’t find the reference photo I took while I had been working on this piece. Unfortunately, it looks like I’ve irretrievably deleted it. That’s why I’ve added an older photo with a slightly different set-up as a reference to my photo slide. The little hut is still quite recognizable, I’d say. For this piece I was once again inspired by one of @melanie_chadwick’s sketching prompts for the month of May: “Garden”. I’ve used watercolor and colored pencils here. Today, I’ve been heavily inspired by @lizsteelart‘s teacup sketches to take some time to study my favorite coffee cup. I started with a quick ten minute watercolor sketch without pre-drawing and added two very small studies in colored pencil and ink afterwards before taking a break and doing a more dedicated one hour sketch in watercolor and colored pencils on the opposite page afterwards (without the spoon I had included in the sketches before). While I'm quite happy with the result of the more elaborate drawing, I can also see that drawing slower doesn't necessarily mean drawing better. In my last sketch, for example, I worked out the details of the decor really well, but didn't pay enough attention to the perspective. In fact, the cup should have been more open at the top, meaning I should have drawn the ellipse a little larger. Anyway, I’m aware that I’m being quite harsh to myself with complaints like these. I’m back from my short trip to my parents and ready to share the pieces I did in my sketchbook while I was away. Well, one of them, for the time being, because not only am I having some trouble taking good pictures of my pages today (the lighting already looks a bit strange on this one) I also can’t find the reference pic I took for the piece I made yesterday (seems like I’ve accidentally deleted it 😢), and as I am in a bit of a hurry, I’ve decided to share today, what I drew on Thursday and make a second post for the piece I did today. Yesterday’s piece I’m going to share tomorrow or on Monday after I’ve taken some time to search for the missing photo. I had a few appointments today, that’s why I’m a bit late sharing the piece for my personal daily art challenge. Today I’m joining @landscapeartclub for their first monthly challenge, which for May 2024 is exclusively related to palm trees. They’ve uploaded a lot of reference photos in their related post and I’ve been inspired by one of them showing a beautiful palm tree silhouette against an impressive sunset sky. I really love how the colors turned out and am quite satisfied with my take on the tree as well. As I’ll be on a short trip over the next few days, I probably won’t be posting here as regularly as I’ve done over the last week. Tiny happy people spreading joy (hopefully). When doing these sketches today I’ve been both extremely uncertain and at my absolute happy place. One would think that these two emotional states don’t go together at all, but they did. I absolutely love making up little characters like these, I just can’t stop smiling when they appear on my page but at the same time I don’t believe in my ability to make them come to life and I’m fearing every stroke I do. So working on a simple spread like this is totally stressing me out. 😅 That’s also the reason why I started sketching on random note paper first and only glued in the portraits on the left before I dared to work directly into my sketchbook. I’m extremely happy with the outcome and I wish I could take these little guys further. But I can’t draw bodies at all and it already took me years to get where I’m now. I have, however, recently bought two character drawing courses at Domestica and I also downloaded the Easy Art Essential guides by @schmoedraws so I have at least laid the foundations to get further. I für Iguana oder Leguan Für das #sketchabc2024 von @derherrlehrer und @c_freimann Tennessee Williams hat ein Theaterstück geschrieben, das den Titel " Die Nacht des Leguan " trägt. Am Ende geht es nur am Rande um den Leguan, allerdings ist es für den Leguan dann doch zentral, da er nicht wie ursprünglich geplant im Kochtopf landet. Today I’ve been inspired by the monthly theme on @katie_moody ‘s Patreon – Japan – to sketch some cherry blossoms, whose flowering season is unfortunately much too short. I’ve only used colored pencils on this piece because I wanted to keep it soft and magical to match the subject. Although that worked out and the overall outcome is certainly not bad, the sketch looks a bit too realistic for my taste. I already painted a branch of cherry blossoms a few years ago, which looked a bit tight but which I liked it much better in terms of it’s degree of stylization (swipe to see). I’ll definitely have to bear that in mind next time I draw or paint cherry blossoms. For day two of my personal 30 day art challenge I took on the prompt “owl” from the #BringSpring2024 challenge held by @ohn_mar_win @annasokolovaartist @jendixonarts @marienoellewurm and @julia_henze . While I do find the sketch looks as rushed as it actually came together, I had a lot of fun developing this little character. I love how cute it came out and how fluffy its feathers look. It’s only after I had taken the photo that I realized I could have paid more attention to the contrast of the claws (is this the correct word for the owl’s feet?) against the branch, but that’s just a minor issue that can easily be fixed. Hello May! ☀️ It’s finally starting to get warmer where I live, and it’s also getting a bit busier here on Instagram it seems. There are so many art and creative challenges announced for this month that I spontaneously felt inclined to add a personal one this morning to make sure that I’ll keep up with everything that’s going on. I’m embarking on a 30 day art challenge, meaning I’m (trying) to create at least one small piece of art every day for the next 30 days hoping not only to speed up my sketching but also to experiment with art materials that I haven’t yet used a lot. I would be really glad if you’d like to join me on this journey and support me with advice and criticism whenever you think it might be useful. I’m not sure if I’ll manage to post my makes every day but if not I’ll make sure to share one or two days later. Today I’m unfortunately starting with a sketch relating to a challenge that already ended last night. It’s based on a reference image by @lenamoz for week 13 of @drawdailytogether. I had saved this image a few days ago and it was only after I had finished the sketch this morning that I realized that new references pictures had already been uploaded last night. 😞 Anyway, what’s more important is that I not only played with markers that I don’t usually use for sketching but I also absolutely enjoyed the process. In that respect this sketch is a really successful start to my 30 day art challenge. I’ll probably won’t be as happy with all of my makes over the next weeks – but who knows? Inspired by another challenge by @landscapeartclub. This time I used a reference by @emilythesaintpaints sharing a beautiful spot on the U.S. Virgin Islands. I absolutely love the photo (wish I could be there right now but then -who wouldn’t? 😉). However, I had difficulties painting the sea spray. I used gouache and followed some tips shared by @sarahburnsstudio but I didn’t get the paint consistency right and then I fiddled too much so that the spray looked a bit too flat in the end. Anyway, I also tried to work a bit looser than in my last pieces and that definitely worked out. So all in all, I’m quite satisfied with this piece. (ad - because I want to give a shout-out to a supply I bought recently and that's the safest way to do it, I guess 😉) If you’re following my stories, you might have noticed that I recently bought a small test block of the new @hahnemuehle_global Sugar Cane paper. I experimented a little bit with it – randomly applied some watercolor to see how the paper reacted to it. As I've already tested other budget watercolor papers in the past, I didn't have particularly high expectations, but I was positively impressed by how well the paint reacted. So much that I wanted to test the paper further. A large green blob of colour on the bottom edge made me think of a recent post by @iraville, in which she stated that she occasionally paints landscapes quite intuitively. I took this as a model for this miniature landscape and gradually developed my blob into this little scene. As it didn't look too nice on the otherwise blotted sheet, I cut it out, added some cut-out clouds turned the pieces into this collage (which still needs to be glued together because I haven't yet decided on the background paper I want to use). The Sugar Cane paper also coped well with the other media I used on it (colored pencils and acrylic markers). First off, a huge thank you to everyone for the amazing reaction to my recent cow sketch 🐮 and a very warm welcome to all of my new followers! 🤗 I’m absolutely overwhelmed by your wonderful feedback. 🥰 Thank you so much for being here to join me on my journey. Today, I’m once more joining @drawdailytogether this time for a lovely urban scene recreated from a reference by @smidovalucia. I’m always intrigued by urban sketching but I never really dare to actually approach it. In the rare cases I turn to urban scenes I sketch from photographs and it takes me ages to finish them. This scene, for example, took me about four days to complete. It’s always taking me time to work out a composition that I’m satisfied with, lay down the rough sketch and then add the different paint layers. I know a lot of you can do this in one go with amazing results (and I envy you for that) but I’m rather hesitant in that respect and usually have to pause in between those steps and make up my mind on how to continue. Again I’m joining @drawdailytogether for a fun and extremely stylized interpretation of one of their current reference images by @olamozej. I just couldn’t help sketching the shy little cow peeking out from behind the tree. As I had never drawn a cow before I did some warm-up sketches on scrap paper but soon realized that all my cows looked like anything but an animal so I started to stylize them with which I was much more successful. After having made this adjustment, I had a tons of fun with the reference photo. I absolutely love how that little cutie turned out. The only thing that’s left to do now is to think of a name for her. I've never been more aware of the benefits of drawing vs. taking a photo than here! In Berlin I went to visit Queen Nefertiti, who stood in all her glorious beauty alone in a room, allowing her to be admired from all sounds, safely behind glass. "No photos please" was the constant refrain from the museum staff to the many visitors coming to see her. I stood there for some time, balancing my crayons, sketch card and carefully made this drawing. I had so much fun with that landscape challenge yesterday that I thought I’d just tackle another one. This time I followed a prompt by @landscapeartclub (week 123) based on a wonderful reference photo by @judithcrowleyart . I used watercolour and watercolour pencils for this one. As I’m not a huge fan of really bright pinks I muted down the colours quite a bit. I really love how this one turned out. A very quick landscape sketch based on a reference by @drawdailytogether and @art.by.txk (week 10) done with watercolours, coloured pencils and a white Posca Pen. The idea of drawing every day really appeals to me and I would love to take on a dedicated challenge, but I absolutely can’t manage that right now. I'm already happy that I've at least been able to draw and paint regularly again for a few weeks now. When I have a bit of time these days and I don't know what to draw, I find challenges that offer reference pictures so practical. I found out about @drawdailytogether's sketching challenge through @susannerose_sketchbook. This is what I am looking forward to next term on the Online Drawing Development Year: Drawing from the National Gallery with @antjesouthern and @lin_seku - its only in the second half of term, but I think we can learn so much from artists of the past. Like Van Gogh, who taught himself by studying and copying work by Courbet. Here I am in the Alte Nationalgalerie Berlin, working from Gustav Courbet's wave... a painting full of threat, movement and somewhat menacing. Does this sound familiar? You plan to do a lot of painting on a weekend trip and then you get almost nothing done. Well, at least, that's what happened to me over the weekend. I packed a large bag with all sorts of different art supplies, but I ended up finishing nothing more than the spread you see above. In fact, I only finished the plants on the right at home last night after realizing that painting in the car is even more difficult than I had already assumed. This shows once again that you should never aim too high, I guess. Anyway, I still had a great weekend. So still in Berlin...Here you can see me standing on the Karl Marx Allee infront of one of the housing blocks built during the era. Swipe left to see "seditious human trafficking" as pictured in the Stasimuseum (interesting when countries are talking about sending asylum seekers to Ruanda) and "normal" people being photographed going about their daily lives by spies. As an artist, I would have been on the "disreputable list" because artists demand freedom. But the state is promising a "better freedom", so doesn't know which direction the artist is going to go in. Former East Germany, DDR, came across very much as a man-led organisation in the museum. Which made it all the more interesting to look at from today's female perspective. The upper echelons were ALL men - to the extent that the "casino" where they entertained guests (4th sketch) was built with a ladies toilet, but this was converted to a small kitchenette, because there were simply no ladies at this level. The women were secretaries, spies, and allowed to iron letters that had been opened for surveillance - to make them appear unopened. I believe ideology is simply not a good idea, whatever it is. Another simplified landscape sketch. This one was a bit more difficult because there was a lot going on in the reference photo (which unfortunately I can’t share, because I found it randomly online – I hope it’s okay to share my take on it though) – much more than on the reference for my last sketch, which had been quite calm at least in the foreground. I’m not entirely happy with it (the rocks in the foreground get a bit lost, I didn’t plan that thoroughly enough) but I like the overall outcome. How do you tackle simplification? Does it come natural to you or are you struggling with it? I’m actually struggling with it quite regularly. When drawing or painting from reference I’m never sure what to leave out without making my final piece look to boring or too crowded, which would be the other extreme. Only rarely I’m really satisfied with my pieces in that respect. With this sketch it was different. It almost painted itself. Do you recognize this building? It’s the cute little village church of Gelmeroda, Germany, famously painted several times by Lyonel Feininger. Years ago, I visited this cozy looking place close to the city of Weimar on a bike tour and took some photographs that served as inspiration for this sketchbook piece which I did recently. Two versions of an Easter inspired spring scene. I originally started with the bottom sketch but absolutely hated how it came out on the cellulose paper with lots of backruns and cauliflowering that I had to mask with heavy layers of colored pencils on top. (You may not see it so much in the final image, but it really looked awful with only the watercolor layers applied.) Also, even though I had intended to exaggerate them a bit, the bunny ears turned out to be slightly too big on my first sketch. So I started another attempt on cotton paper, which I like much better. Can you relate? You’re feeling absolutely motivated to create something but no matter what you try, it goes wrong. And then, when you’ve just called it a day, you’re doing some random stuff which magically turns into the best thing you’ve done that day. That’s exactly what happened to me with this random sketchbook page. I’ve been trying to draw stylized faces and figures for what felt like ages but just came up with stiff and boring linework. I gave up, doodled some random circles which all of the sudden looked like lily pads to me and step by step this cute little scene evolved. Sometimes it helps to be a bit less zealous. Sketchbook page after five days of practising quick portrait drawings. Normally, I like to draw more stylized characters. But we can only stylize stuff we’ve examined closely in real life first. So when @lizsteelart hosted the #OneWeek100People2024 challenge, which – unsurprisingly – challenged participants to draw 100 people in one week I seized the chance to improve at my portrait drawing skills. Because it seemed obvious, I also tried to combine this challenge with the well-known #100headschallenge asking participants to draw 100 heads in 10 days. I must confess that I didn’t succeed in either (I only drew 50 heads in 5 days), nevertheless, the challenge did help me to improve my skills as I had intended, so it has still been successful in this respect. A little house from imagination painted with Gouache in my very old Moleskine sketchbook. I’ve started this sketchbook way back in 2014, when I used it for art journaling which I don’t to anymore. I went through so many phases in there that I just want to fill it up now so that I can call it finished and put it away. But I always have to force me to use it. There are only six pages left but it could as well take me another six years to fill them. 😂 And it's not even the sketchbooks fault. Somehow we just don't match. I’ve had another play with my Flashe paints over the weekend. I’m still working out the best consistency and paint-to-water ratio, especially for more fluid applications as needed for the grass for example (which still looks a bit stiff). Happy international women’s day! 🎉 What is your superpower? These three ladies certainly draw their strength from their happiness. I sketched them a few weeks ago in my sketchbook mainly to test out my new sample pack of Flashe paints. I came across them some months ago through a video by @monidmajor and was intrigued to hear that they have a matte finish and that coloured pencils work really well on top. But somewhere I also read that they’re not the best paints for mixing because they easily become muddy and some mixes even look streaky when dry. Some artists also complain that they dry too fast. That’s why I started out with a test pack first. After having played with them a bit I must admit that like working with them a lot, though, and that the fast drying time was no problem with regard to smaller sketchbook pieces. What’s more is that pencils really work like a charm on this paint. I love them! They make me as happy as the girls I painted them with. A windswept autumn tree Flicking through my sketchbook over the weekend after having shared my winter tree on Friday I stumbled across this autumn sketch that I worked on some months ago. It’s apparently inspired by the same tree, yet throughout autumn. I remember that I struggled at first to translate the windy atmosphere to the sketch. (You can still see some of my fretful pencil marks for the pre-sketch in the close-up. 😉) I wanted the tree to look bend, but as soon as I painted the crown at an angle, the sketch looked wrong. It totally drove me crazy until I suddenly had the idea of leaving the crown straight and instead only suggesting movement through the foliage and a few smaller branches. I could probably have worked neater when bringing my idea to paper, but in the end I had been too impatient and only wanted to finish this piece. What I do love about it is its dynamic and the fact that I’ve been successful in the end. It may not be neat but, after all, it’s only a sketch and I learned something from making it. How do you feel about the fact that winter is soon bidding farewell? To be honest, I am somewhat ambivalent about this. On the one hand, I'm looking forward to the warmer weather and the awakening of nature. On the other hand, I will miss the cosiness and purity of winter. That's why I wanted to return here on Instagram after a long, long break with a little homage to winter – even though I know that spring is just around the corner (swipe for details). I was inspired to create this sketch by looking out of my window, where I look straight at a tall poplar tree. As slow as possible, ein Versprechen an die Zukunft. Ein Orgelmusikstück von John Cage, das as slow as possible über einen Zeitraum von 639 Jahren aufgeführt wird, seit 2001 auf dieser Orgel in Halberstadt in der St. Buchadi Kirche. Zum ersten Mal habe ich davon im Roman "Apeirogon" von Colum Mc Cann gehört. Im Buch geht es um 2 Väter, einer aus Palästina ( Bassam) und einer aus Israel ( Rami) , die beide in diesem grässlich langwierigen Konflikt ihre 9 bzw. 14 jährige Tochter verloren haben. Nun kämpfen sie beide für den Frieden. Wirklich ein sehr besonderes Buch. Ein Orgelkonzert, das über die Dauer von 639 Jahren, was für ein Projekt. Das "C" im #sketchabc2024 von @derherrlehrer und @c_freimann : da nehme ich mal das Chamäleon... So ein Chamäleon ist ja schon ein recht erstaunliches Tier, mega lange Zunge, bewegt die Augen rundherum und unabhängig von einander und kann die Hautfarben wechseln. Die meisten Arten leben auf Madagaskar, es gibt sie aber auf dem gesamten afrikanischen Kontinent. Ich finde bunte Vielfalt ja gut. Diesmal Bilder vom Sport. Auf dem Baseballfeld mit den bunten Hunden, [ @bunte_hunde_kunst ] noch immer in den USA unterwegs. Nach einem historischen Foto von 1904. Da ich mit meinem ersten Ergebnis nicht so recht zufrieden war, habe ich mich nun nocheinmal mit dem Motiv beschäftigt. So gefällt es mir auch ! So recht verstehen kann ich das Spiel ja nicht, das war schon immer recht rätselhaft bei den Charlie Brown Cartoons von Charles M. Schulz. Nun habe ich mal ein bisschen nach den Regeln geschaut, die beiden wichtigsten Protagonisten der Mannschaften scheinen dabei erstmal der "Batter", also der mit Schläger und der "Pitcher", also der mit dem riesigen Handschuh zu sein. Die beiden gehören jeweils unterschiedlichen Mannschaften an. Der Pitcher wirft den Ball möglichst so, das der Batter danebenhaut. Trifft er den Ball jedoch, rennt er los zur nächsten Base, davon gibt's glaube ich vier. Jedenfalls gibt's dann irgendwann Punkte und die Rollen der Teams wechseln auch irgendwie.... naja usw.....
