Simply put…..Touch trumps hand signals, and hand signals trump commands. When a dog isn’t looking at us or listening us, it’s a lot harder to ignore touch. Tactile (touch) cues such as gently handling your dog or guiding them with the leash can help get the message through when your dog is distracted. Dogs are masters at reading our body language. They are social animals that communicate mainly with body language. They sure know how to read us! A simple hand signal can often be developed when you are teaching commands. But what about auditory cues? Well, verbal commands like "sit" can sometimes get lost in the noise of everything else going on around them. That's why it's helpful to pair commands with hand signals or leash cues for better understanding. I often hear from owners is that their dogs don’t listen. When I assess their dog on the command they aren’t “listening” to, I’ll get the owner to just use the word 5 times. Eg. “Sit”. I will then get the owner to use their hand signal alone 5 times and the dog does it. So why is the dog not listening? They follow hand signals over words. If you are teaching them to sit by using a hand signal and a word at the same time, the hand signal distracts from the word… so they only know it by hand signal. Same would happen with leash cues, however I’ve found most owners aren’t aware you could have a leash cue for things like “sit”. I like to use this principle for things like jumping on visitors. If a dog isn’t responding to command or looking at an owner for a hand signal when they are so excited, you are left with no way to get your dog to sit. They can’t ignore the leash cue because it isn’t going away! So, if your dog isn’t listening. Do a self assessment. If you get stuck, that’s what I’m here for. Consider this: Just because someone loves dogs or works with them in some capacity doesn't automatically make them a training expert. Your vet, as amazing as they are at keeping your pup healthy, is likely not the go-to for behavioural training tips. And while your neighbor's dog is adorable, they likely do not have the knowledge and experience to solve your training issues. Don’t get me wrong, these are just a couple of examples of completely well-meaning and lovely people who are just trying to help, but can unintentionally create a disastrous situation. It's crucial to seek advice from those who specialize in dog training. These are the people who've dedicated their time, energy and money to understanding canine behavior inside and out. I witness it often– clients coming to me frustrated and confused after following misguided advice from well-meaning but misinformed sources, sometimes even making a highly dangerous problem where there once was none. I’ve given up trying…” You’ve been dreading this walk all day and have left it as late as possible in hope of not coming across others. You step out the door and start scanning the street, keeping a short, tight leash just in case another dog or person unexpectedly pops out from behind a fence. 😬 You get to the corner of your street and you are on edge, and then it happens….the friendly guy up the road with the nicely behaved off-lead dog is coming your way. 😱 There’s nowhere to go, they’re already too close. You pull Frankie in closer, desperately hoping for more grip…. Here it comes…. (Growl, Bark, Lunge, Snarl…. Hold on for dear life). The worst reaction yet! 😭 💭What must he think of me? He must think I’m a bad owner. Look how well his dog is trained. She walked straight past off leash with her owner. 💭What if I had let go? Frankie may have bitten his dog…the owner may have got bitten trying to break up a fight….I could be in trouble and lose my dog…!😭 The following days, you don’t take Frankie out and instead play fetch in the backyard. You feel guilty but the immense relief of not having to go through that experience wins out…..for now. The guilt though….it grows as the days pass by…. 🐶This is the story of so many dog owners in the Wellington Shire & Gippsland as a whole. It was once my story too. It doesn’t have to be this way. So, what does it mean to "do what others won't" in the context of dog training? “Onward, Brave heart.” This is an affirmation I write to myself sometimes daily. I love the word, "Onward" because it can mean bounding forward with energy and joy, or it can mean you just keep going. It seems fitting for any occasion. 🧼 This soap was supposed to be a bar called, "After the Rain," and be a rainbow bar. But the colors surprised me and turned out SO much darker than expected. The colors of no rainbow ever. So, I did a soap maker's pivot. 🌈 The colors I saw reminded me of a Patagonia jacket. Adventure. An Arizona sunset. That deep dusky sky that settles in with the last fading rays of daylight. I saw hiking boots, canteens, and a pitched tent. I saw a burning desire to be outside. So, instead of “After the Rain,” this soap, “Onward.” was born.
