Do you try to reduce the amount of chocolate over your toddlerβs Easter? This week, the Mini Minas went on an Easter egg snack hunt. I added a selection of (non chocolate-y)snacks and gifts using these the refillable eggs and hid them around the garden. First, the children sang along to the book βFive Little Easter Bunnies,β to secure their understanding of an Easter egg hunt with lots of focus on spring/Easter vocabulary. Then, each child went off in search of their colour eggs using their Easter baskets. Have you tried painting flowers with stamps made from celery heads? The Mini Minas practised their mark marking strokes and stamping skills by creating their own spring garden painting. This activity created so much vocabulary discussion: flower, stem, brush, up, down, stamp, off, on top etc. But the most fun was had when they were able to go wild and get creative making an abstract art picture using the skills theyβd practised for their garden painting. What age did your child become interested in colours? With our Mini Minas between the ages of 18 months and 2.5 years old, we are in peak colour curiosity stage here. This simple colour sorting activity was perfect for a rainy day, with everybody building their own colour tower. What are your favourite letter recognition activities? This simple sticker sorting activity helped reinforce lots of skills for my little one this week. Not only was it a letter recognition game, but it was an opportunity to practise fine motor skills too. Using a variety of different colours ensured she focused on the shape of the letters instead of relying on colours to sort, which allowed for lots of talk between us where we repeated the letter sounds. This week we have been making these delicious bird seed cakes for the #bigschoolsbirdwatch As soon as we hung them out some of our Robin, great tit and pigeon friends were enjoying the treats. A super easy idea shared by my Montessori friend Sonia at @reddoormontessori up in Liverpool. Just a selection of our activities in December. I tried to keep Christmas as low key as possible, treating it the same as any other theme so that the children didn't get over excited. It was fantastic how they all remained calm, working on their practical life skills in the main as we have a young cohort at the moment (most of them under 3). I think that making gingerbread was their favourite, closely followed by the creative activities (only a couple shown here).
