Such an amazing week with the Mimosa crew visiting #WinnallMoorsNatureReserve in Winchester 🌲🌱🐸🌿 We enjoyed tree climbing, wading through streams and muddy puddles, wildlife spotting and hot chocolate in the wood circle. I feel very lucky to have this space in the heart of the city and our children embraced the fresh air and abundance of nature as only children can. This week we have been making these delicious bird seed cakes for the #bigschoolsbirdwatch As soon as we hung them out some of our Robin, great tit and pigeon friends were enjoying the treats. A super easy idea shared by my Montessori friend Sonia at @reddoormontessori up in Liverpool. Pine cones, peanut butter and bird seed - make sure you attach the string before applying the peanut butter and rolling in seed 😂 The children loved this process and were very keen to take them home to hang up. 💜🌿💜 As this week is @winchestergreenweek in our home city we thought we would have a go at natural dyeing with leftover blackberries - a new experiment for us all and we loved it 💜🌿💜 🌿tie up a small square of cotton sheet with string 💜Pick leftover red and black blackberries 🌿Enjoy smashing them up with wooden spoons 💜Add the blackberries and juice to a little water in a bucket 🌿Throw in your tied bundles and poke and prod with a long stick (the children loved this bit!) 💜Hang outside to drip dry. 🌿Open and check out amazing tie-dye patterns and colours Such a beautiful process to be enjoyed outside in nature with the leftover summer fruit. This year we tried growing potatoes for the first time following a few top tips from @alantitchmarshmbe Well, we loved it, super easy to grow from seed potatoes @hilliergardencentres, five planted per growing bag, topping up with compost as the plants grew up tall and green. The children loved tipping them out and digging for potatoes - a great natural treasure hunt 🤣 The potatoes did end up quite small but were super tasty. Our green bean plants are big enough to pot up in soil and send home to plant out in the garden. Growing them in a jar has been pretty magical for the children to see. The seeds change daily from germination through to seedlings sending down roots into the water. All you need is a jar, cotton or kitchen towel, a couple of bean seeds and water. This weekend is Wild Weekender - an initiative to get people growing and making space for nature and wildlife to flourish in spaces at home, work and in the community. The project is led by @rspb_love_nature @wwf_uk and @nationaltrust and part of the Save Our Wild Isles campaign championed by @davidattenborough This week we have loved a book I chose while at a recent visit to the @edenprojectcornwall called ‘Mia Makes a Meadow’. It is a beautiful book written by rachellawston about creating wild nature spaces, kindness and community. Our children have loved it and it’s going to be a firm favourite in our book corner. 📚 We have also shared some @higgledygarden Bee Friendly Seed Mix for all our children to grow at home. This week we have been making Pysanky eggs using ceramic eggs, wax crayons and watercolours. Pysanky eggs are a decorative egg from Ukraine 🇺🇦 which are created using wax resist and beautifully intricate in detail. The word Pysanky is derived from the Ukrainian word pysanty, which means “to write” and it is thought each egg can tell its own story. This is such a lovely mindful and relaxing activity which we have close to our entrance gate and helps any children who may need a transition activity from home into our setting. Painting and fresh air two of my fave things 💗 Love the way that even our tiniest of children know exactly where they can access materials to be creative. Painting with watercolours: A shelf outside with a paint set, paper and water in a jar with a brush. Before they have developed the language that they would like to paint they are able to select their materials, find a space to work and paint 😁 Other simple activities outside for creativity include stamping, chalk board and chalks, cutting with scissors, colouring pencils, papers plus our painting easel for larger scale painting. Today we took a trip to Winnall Moors for some spring time adventures. We had hoped to find some frogspawn and tadpoles but we couldn’t find any 🤷♀️ But we did see a trio of beautiful deer, a swan, a heron flying overhead and lots of birds. We also met Fenella the Otter and enjoyed hot chocolate down by the pond. 🍁🍃🍂Last week we had a go at making a tissue and leaf lantern following an idea from @littlepinelearners We collected leaves, pressed them for a few days and then added layers of tissue and leaves onto a balloon with glue and water. The result is a super sweet lantern which we have popped a tea light in. It’s conker play time! We have been loving the change in season here at Mimosa and the children have been enjoying conkers this week - exploring their spiky shells and opening them to reveal the glossy nut inside. Simple transferring activities are great for using these free, easy to find treasures - and I like to hide one golden acorn in ours for the children to find too😜. You can change tongs, spoons or scoops to make it more challenging or easier for your child and any bowls will do. Although metal ones make a lovely ting and wooden ones make a deep thud. Thank you so much to the wonderful families from Winchester for coming along to our Montessori Play Workshop this morning as part of @winchestergreenweek 🌱 We had an awesome time in the beautiful studio at @thenutshellwinchester Thank you for providing us and the local community with this space to explore, create, learn and have fun 🙏🏻 🌱 Our workshop shared ideas for sustainable play using kitchen supplies, household objects and charity shop finds. No need for expensive materials or toys - use what you have or recycle other people’s unwanted objects. Local places for sustainable supplies include: @southampton_scrapstore @emmaushampshire or ‘I need a whisk Winchester’ Facebook group or any of the Winchester charity shops. 🌱 Play ideas explored include: - transferring with tongs, spoons, scoops and jugs. - creating a shaker out of recycled materials and dried beans / rice - making homemade playdough (visit @imaginationtree for recipe) - magnetism activity with any household magnetic and non magnetic objects - floating activity with household objects that float or sink - transferring pom poms with tongs - slotting sticks into objects - tens frame with shells or any objects that the child is interested in at the moment. - pouring with a funnel - transferring water with a pipette - opening and closing baskets with pots, bottles and tins from recycled materials or those found in charity shops. Summer Art Camp: Transient Art and Polaroid pics On day two of Art Camp we created a corner for making some circular artworks with natural materials. This ended up being led by two of our older campers who ran with the show and supported younger children to understand the process and show them how to use a Polaroid camera.
