On this day in 1972, the guy who got pulled off Apollo 13 for being exposed to the measles, and the guy who exposed him to the measles, blasted off on their first flight in space - and to the Moon, no less! Oh ... and with them was the corned beef smuggler who was on his second trip to the Moon ... πŸŒŽπŸš€πŸŒ–β˜„ Apollo 16 Commander: John Young Command Module Pilot: Ken Mattingly Lunar Module Pilot: Charlie Duke CSM Callsign: Casper LM Callsign: Orion Launch Date: 16 April 1972 Lunar Landing Date: 21 April 1972 Earth Landing Date: 27 April 1972 Mission Duration: 11d 1h 51m 5s Rocket: Saturn V SA-511 Mission type: Lunar Landing Landing site: Descartes Highlands Objectives: * Attempt lunar landing on Descartes Highlands. (Successful) * Commander and Lunar Module Pilot (LMP) to perform extra vehicular activity (EVA) to collect lunar samples from the Descartes and Cayley formations. (Successful) * Commander to operate Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) on lunar surface. (Successful) * Command Module Pilot (CMP) to conduct observations of lunar surface from Command/Service Module (CSM) in lunar orbit. (Successful) * CMP to perform EVA to retrieve film cassettes from the exterior of CSM. (Successful) Fun Facts: * Apollo 16 was the back-up crew for Apollo 13. Mattingly was originally assigned to Apollo 13. However, Duke contracted rubella from one of his children, exposing the prime and back-up crew of Apollo 13. Mattingly was ths only crew member to never had rubella, therefore not immuned. At the insistence of Flight Surgeon, Mattingly was replaced by Jack Swigert 3 days before the launch of Apollo 13. On this day in 1970, three men proved that the number 13 didn't need luck when you have a great team of engineers and scientists and the whole world rallying behind you. πŸŒŽπŸš€πŸŒ–πŸŒ β˜„ Apollo 13 Commander: Jim Lovell Command Module Pilot: Jack Swigert Lunar Module Pilot: Fred Haise CSM Callsign: Odyssey LM Callsign: Aquarius Launch date: 11 April 1970 Landing date: 17 April 1970 Mission duration: 5d 22h 54m 41s Rocket: Saturn V SA-508 Mission type: Lunar Landing Expected landing site: Fra Mauro Highlands Return date: 15 April 1970 Objective: Explore the Fra Mauro highlands on the lunar surface. (Unsuccessful - mission aborted) Fun facts: * The crew was the backup crew for Apollo 11, which meant under standard rotation, they were supposed to be Apollo 14. Apollo 13 was originally Alan Shepard, Stu Roosa, and Edgar Mitchell. However, Shepard had just been medically cleared after being grounded since 1963 due to MΓ©niΓ¨re's disease. Management felt that Shepard required more training time, so Lovell's crew was bumped forward. * Ken Mattingly was originally the Command Module Pilot (CMP). However, Charlie Duke from the back-up crew contracted rubella from one of his children. As the prime and back-up crew train closely together, all members were exposed. Mattingly was the only member who never had rubella. Three days before launch, at the insistence of the Flight Surgeon, Mattingly was replaced by Swigert, who was his back-up. (Successful) * Attempt the first manned lunar orbit. (Successful - 10 orbits) Fun Facts: * Michael Collins was originally assigned Command Module Pilot (CMP) but had to undergo surgery for a cervical disc herniation. Lovell, who was the back-up CMP, was his replacement. * Apollo 8 was originally Apollo 9. The original Apollo 8 was the planned D Mission to test the Lunar Module (LM) in low Earth Orbit. However, there were overall safety concerns with the LM, and it was not ready to make the planned launch date. * CIA intel showed the Russians had rockets that were being prepared for a lunar target by the end of the year. As the LM for Apollo 8 was not yet ready, management proposed the E Mission (the original Apollo 9) of lunar orbit be swapped with the D Mission as lunar orbit did not need the LM. * Apollo 8 was the first manned mission to use the Saturn V rocket. * The positions of CMP and Lunar Module Pilot (LMP) were misnomers on this mission. The CMP was actually in charge of navigation, and the LMP was in charge of monitoring the spacecraft systems. The flight did not have a Lunar Module, and the Commander was piloting the whole time. * While orbiting the Moon, the crew was on reconnaissance, taking pictures of possible landing sites for future missions. Did you know?: Arthur Ferdinand "Tex" Anders, father of Bill Anders, was on duty as the executive officer on the USS Panay on 12 December 1937. It was anchored in Nanking, China, on patrol on the Yangtze River, when it was attacked by Japanese planes. Both of his hands were wounded while attempting to man a deck gun. When he went to the bridge to find the commanding officer, he was hit in the throat with shrapnel. The CO ordered his men to abandon ship and went into a lifeboat with a broken leg. Tex - wounded, unable to speak and suffering blood loss, supervised the ship's evacuation by writing the order to abandon ship on a chart stained with his blood. He continued to write directives on pieces of paper and on the bulkhead to ensure that all crew members were evacuated. The USS Panay sank. Three crewmen and two civilians were killed, and 43 crewmen and 5 civilians were wounded. Tex was initially awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, but it was upgraded to the Navy Cross. #nasa #astronautics #astronauts #astronaut #spaceflight #spacegeeks #spacegeek #spacetravel #spaceexploration #space #projectapollo #apolloprogram #apolloproject #moonshot #moontravellers #apollo8 #billanders #arthuranders #tex #usspanay #navycross #didyouknow

$5 + shipping from Arizona *** Retro fireworks packaging and boxes for displays or crafting. You get the whole lot. ... All boxes are empty and in good condition. How great is the "Moon Travellers" paper wrapper!? ... There are 3 bees that were in box. If purchased in town, you can have bees. But I CANNOT SHIP THEM, its illegal. I can try and light them and see if the shells stay in tact. Or try and remove the little top bee paper labels- they are just so cute. ... Message if you have questions. ... #treasurehunter #estatesalefinds #bohosonorantreasures #vintagefireworks #retrofireworks #moontravellers #sparklers
