Today I was listening to @themidwivescauldron podcast (which if you are pregnant intending to breastfeed or are a breastfeeding mama I would HIGHLY recommend you listen to) The episode was about breastfeeding aversion, (again really interesting topic great listen if you have ever experienced aversion) anyway one strand of conversation recognised that generally speaking we all have an expectation of what pregnancy, birth and motherhood might be like. Often driven by the media channels in our lives. And that often, in fact, in every case your expectations are probably not going to be met. This whole motherhood things is bloody hard work! And even pretty honest pages like this one don’t often cover the full spectrum. Show the really shitty stuff. This isn’t a bad day for me so far. But I did just want to share this. When I get hungry it often comes out of nowhere and I immediately feel like the hulk and I mean mega angry unless I eat NOW! Beatrice needed a change of nappy her cloths were also wet. As a mum I often put everyone else’s needs above mine. I used to think it was selfish to sort me out first. I don’t believe that one bit but old habits are ingrained! So today I changed the nappy that was causing upset but the wet clothes stayed on until I’d eaten and had a drink. I NEVER would have done that with William I would provide all often at a detriment to myself. In the long term this led to a pretty rubbish mindset for me! And it’s something I have worked really hard to get out of. YOU MATTER. After listening today I’m certainly going to try to show more of the real mum stuff too! Yes I’m good at self regulation… I used movement, breath and writing to help me every day. LESSONS from a 4 yr old.. This morning William asked me change the battery in this toy. Reasonably simple task… but I couldn’t find the screw driver. Now in Williams world the screwdrivers home is a particular draw in our kitchen. (My husband would also agree with this statement) However I used it last to change another toy battery and I put the screw driver somewhere else. I do this often. You see in my head stuff does have a set place but it will rarely go straight back to its home when used… partly because at 4 years old Williams requests overlap so I’m jumping from one thing to the next. But also because my brain doesn’t really care about things going back to their original home. I know it makes my husbands brain itch inside and it clearly does for William too… My point here is our brains are all wired SO differently! Which in itself is so incredible. Becoming a mother switches on some pretty mega parts of your brain and the brain also makes new connections so during pregnancy and after birth you become a new person! You are changed forever, physiologically (not just because you now reply to the name of mummy) It’s really hard to welcome this new human sometimes. For you, for your partner and other children… you are of course still you but a new version. It is NORMAL!!! Your brain will do more rewiring during peri menopause too! (Which by the way can begin gently from around age 37 and is a TRANSITION just like motherhood that can last for 7-8 years) We are cyclical beings we need to celebrate this and enjoy this new version of ourselves that we are able to mould and shape as we grow old. Will I ever learn to put things back where they live… mmmm I think it unlikely… but I’m pretty honest with my family about where my brain is at so they understand why I can’t do things that really annoy them. Just an insight into our family dynamic! How have you changed since birth? Are there any new parts of your personality that you love??? It’s a real mum post from me today! So I’ve just done solo bedtime which I do most Tuesdays… Today we were later as went had some jobs after school and then did some park playing in the sun! ❤️ The evening has been long, tempers high from both of my tiny people… I took this photo after a few minuets of finally feeding Beatrice (to sleep like we do every night) William was watching I pad eating bed snacks (his fave treat thing to do on Tuesdays) he had also spilt yoghurt all over his bed sheets! 🤦♂️ And I had just taken a few minuets in the silence to gather myself. Beatrice was very tired and cried a lot at bath time. I find my babies crying really really hard. It really triggers panic for me…. So once the silence arrived I took 5 minuets to sit. To feel my feet on the floor. To notice my breath, its rhythm and were it was arriving in my body. To look at Beatrice (to soak it up this magical thing of feeding her that in the grand scheme of life is so short lived) I became present… So when I went through to read to William and to lie with him while he fell asleep (all whilst still feeding a dreamy Beatrice) I didn’t get cross or angry at the spilt yoghurt. We enjoyed our stories and he fell asleep peacefully. This skill has taken 4 years. I don’t always get it right. But I can now most of the time create the space I need to regulate myself in order to regulate my children. You can learn how to do this stuff. But it takes time, and work. All of my classes include techniques to cultivate self awareness. It is our number super human power!!! If you are pregnant it is never too early to learn this skill If you are postnatal it is never too late to learn either And if you do not have children you need this skill to support you too. #mummylife #morpethmums #newcastlemums #northumberlandmums

So much NOISE! There is SO MUCH NOISE in the world… Never have I been more aware of it. Out and about in our fave places this weekend I noticed it. Our usual tranquil spots were crowded with visitors, music, events. (Which I have no issue at all with its great to see people enjoying the outdoors and visiting Northumberland) but it left me feeling odd. Lots of thoughts wizzing, a lack of clarity or space in my head, a VERY tense body which caused a return of the pelvic pain… So much noise… There is also so much noise on social media, particularly for the pre and postnatal audiences. Telling us to buy stuff, (material things to “help” us sleep, to stop our bodies tearing when birthing, to help our breast milk come in, to make our babies sleep) it is endless. And it leaves you feeling OVER STIMULATED not able to trust your intuition, instinct, you feel so overwhelmed anxiety and self doubt creep in which physically makes you feel even worse!!! Your body aches, you become snappy with those you love. And then there is more NOISE be it internal or external from those around you. Here’s the thing if we own the ability to connect inward, to regulate our nervous system we don’t need any stuff. We can cope with short periods of being overstimulated , we know we don’t need material stuff because if we are in rest and digest states our bodies will sleep, our bodies might tear but they will heal pretty quickly, our babies probably still won’t sleep but YOU will be able to manage it better with kindness to yourself and to them. Turning down the noise is the greatest gift or skill to posess. If you feel overwhelmed or overstimulated, physically tense or foggy in your thoughts. I have SO much free content on my free members area. 7 movement sessions 7 meditations and even 2 pregnancy classes. All free. To use any time things get NOISEY. Super exciting Easter break , Author visit and activity announcement! Jodie James , Author of the wonderful children’s book How Does Your Garden Grow ? Is coming back to visit ! We will be holding a story time and art activity session in the shop on Friday April 12 at 10 am and 11.30 am. Anyone who came to the last session with Jodie will know how special this event is going to be, Jodie will be sharing her lovely story about what happens in the walled garden at Wallington Hall, a story about nature, friendship and all the beautiful flowers and plants that live in the garden. Perfect for Easter 🐣 Children will also have the opportunity to make flowers and signed books will be available to purchase. Places need to be booked in advance for this event, as I anticipate it will be super popular. £10 per child which will include a £1 discount on book purchase, all art materials for the activity, a drink, and a gift bag which will include a colouring in book, colouring pencils , bookmark and a packet of wildflower seeds. Please pop into the bookshop to book places, or send me a message for BACS transfer details. Early booking highly recommended as Jodie’s story time sessions always book up quickly !
