Breathe out the bad feelings like anger and tension. Show your child you still care about them, no matter how big their feelings are. It's okay to feel all kinds of emotions. But it's not okay to behave badly. If your child was aggressive, like kicking, talk about it later when everyone is calm. Tell them it's okay to be angry but not okay to hurt others. This wrap is everything 🤎 . But, while my husband still remains in the hospital, my heart feels heavy and sad. We are trying our best to keep our heads up, but wow, this is hard. Visiting him every other day, which means to be on a train for an hour with a 4 year old, needing to keep up with chores, the children's needs, school stuff, I feel drained and very alone. I can't sleep because I have nightmares, I wake up sweating and crying, I think this whole chapter is leaving me traumatised. For a couple of days, I was scared of losing him. The last two and a half weeks have been bad. Maybe the worst ever. But I have a couple announcements, First, our celebrating motherhood event opens tomorrow to the public and vip is open right now! Second, as all my newsletter subscribers know, I’ll be going into surgery in a couple months. What does that mean? I’ll be taking 6 weeks off photographing to heal. Family photos, in a way that doesn’t feel like torture to the kids 😉 I feel like for kids it’s so hard to sit still and be cooperative during family photos because they honestly have a million different things they’d rather be doing. However, I feel as creatives we should harness that and make it an experience they don’t have to hate. Running around, playing tag or ring around the Rosie really helps get all the jitters out and allows kids to be kids. Yes traditional photos are nice and all but I think the true magic comes from capturing a child’s personality and who they are in that moment, not who we want them to be. Kids have big opinions and even bigger imaginations, use it to your advantage and ask questions like how do you think we should take photos or giving prompts that allow them to fully embrace the moment! It doesn’t have to be something that families dread about planning or worrying about how their kids are going to behave, it should be a fun process for all parties! Make memories your kids will cherish and like to look back on, capture your family in all of the chaos and love. The best part of newborn sessions is viewing their world of new baby bliss and feeling it, too. It seems like yesterday I was in that phase too but now I have a 1 year old. T R O T S ❤️ Na 4 dagen goed ziek zijn ging hij vandaag toch een dagje proberen in zijn nieuwe school voor volgend schooljaar! Vol moed en zelfverzekerd, maar stiekem met een klein hartje, stapte hij de schoolpoort van de nieuwe school binnen! Een dagje wennen, om de klasgroep waar hij bij zal komen al een beetje te leren kennen en de schoolwerking daar al eens te zien. En natuurlijk om even te checken of het wel zéker de goeie keuze is en of hij zich daar wel goed voelt. Hij vond het best spannend & ik stiekem ook 🫢 met een klein hartje liet ik hem achter deze ochtend maar dat hij het zelf zag zitten hielp wel voor mijn gevoel 😅. Heel de dag dacht ik “hoe zou het daar zijn? - “speelt hij wel met de kindjes die hij nog niet kent? - “voelt hij zich wel oké of duurt de dag voor hem eeuwen?” … Zoveel vragen maar toen ik hem ging ophalen en een lachend gezichtje zag op de speelplaats viel er een enorme last van mijn schouders. Hij was heel enthousiast , had veel verhalen bij & had al vriendjes gemaakt & hij kreeg van iedereen in de klas een aandenken mee naar huis En het allerbelangrijkste was wat hij zei: “Het was echt kei leuk mama” 🙏🏼❤️ Ohja… & de foto: een beetje gek doen doet geen zeer hè!🤪🫶🏼 ••• p.s. Have you thought about which first year milestones you want to capture? The typical first milestones are newborn (of course), the “sitter stage” and one year. This little buddy was on an oxygen tank as a newborn, so we only had 30 minutes (off oxygen) to photograph him as a newborn. Mom brought him to the studio for a session at 4 months old to celebrate this little milestone. This is a really sweet age when they start smiling and are head over heels in love with mama! What does a picture make you feel? I knew from the moment I snapped these that I wanted them on our wall. For the longest time, I loved any picture of the two of them together because they were a lie that gave me hope. I loved going to Costco as a family and seeing them sit in the cart next to each other because it was only time they would sit next to each other and it was so cute (we can’t go to Costco as a family anymore but that’s another story). Because there was a time when she couldn’t take 3 steps in his direction without him having a meltdown. From the time she was mobile, she always wanted to be right next to her big brother. But from the time she was 3 months old, she was too much for him to bear. He’d brutally rebuff and crush her. Still, her adoration for him hasn’t waned. And she continues to follow him around with hearts in her eyes and annoy him in all the ways that little sisters are apt to do. And slowly he’s grown more receptive, and I think even loves her back in his own way. He positively panics when we pretend we are going to leave her behind at the playground. And sometimes I hear them laughing together in another room together and think about how far they’ve come. This picture is a document of their journey. She’s reaching out to him and he’s not reaching back yet. We’re all still on our individual journeys to becoming fully formed humans and that’s okay.
