2/2 In our recent post we carried details of assembly worker and Comet racer John Griffiths attending our LA screening, hosted by @exfeline and @evangelinesvintage. John built and competed on a very special Vincent 500, shown here. A few weeks later, with Vincent’s grandson/associate producer @pvincentday, we were delighted to be joined by Christine Howard at one of our Letchworth screenings. Unlike globe-trotting John, Christine has stayed in and around Stevenage all her life. But very unusually for a woman at the time, she was in a senior position as a tracer in the drawing office: transferring the original designs into final production drawings. So, Christine was able to see the documentary on the big screen. ‘It’s quite a story,’ she told us. Other Stevenage worker families along also included Graham and Jordan Wade, son and grandson of factory worker Terry Wade. Terry’s in one of the most famous factory shots – shown here, making delicate adjustments to the world’s fastest motorcycle – plus a picture of his own enclosed Vincent special built from factory ‘left-overs’. Does it show? Eventually a security guard was installed. Finally, Amanda Coney, daughter of factory telephone receptionist Alma Papworth, came along with her daughter Lily. Alma is in our film, but wasn’t able to make our screening - pictured here with Christine, being interviewed at the former Vincent factory. The genesis of our film began with seeking to record the stories of those who knew and worked with Philip Vincent and Phil Irving. 2/2 Tim played a major role in our film – and narrated key parts. Getting an independent feature documentary completed brings highs and lows. Tim was there at every turn. He and producer Gerry Jenkinson met back in 1987 at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow where Gerry was lighting designer. They bonded through a passion for classic motorcycles, riding with Tim on his Bonneville, Gerry on his D Shadow. Later they bought a house together in Peckham, south London. The pair produced a series of wonderful videos in 2010, 2011 and 2012 showcasing Max Lamkey’s record attempts at the Bonneville Salt Flats with a twin-engined Vincent: filmed and edited by Gerry, narrated by Tim. As soon as Tim learnt of our plans for Speed is Expensive he offered to help, and did so in every sphere. His wonderful voice joins Ewan’s main narration with pitch perfect delivery of J B Priestley and George Orwell, as well as recollections of Australian wireless operator Warrant Officer T W Burke, who relays the final bomber flight in 1943 of Philip’s Vincent great friend, and saviour of the Vincent company, Bill Clarke. Burke chronicles Squadron Leader Clarke steering the crew’s ailing Stirling overland so his crew could bail out. Clarke's last words, as his crew prepare to parachute to safety, were: ‘Sorry chaps, I couldn’t do better than this.’ When we reached out to Ewan McGregor, he recognised Tim’s voice-over in our film’s rough cut. Turns out the pair went way back and would ride from jazz club to jazz club in London (another of Tim’s passions) back in the day on their Moto Guzzis. Motorcycling can be a wonderfully small world, as we all know. Our condolences to Tim’s family – thanks for all the support, the bonhomie over a glass at the French House or at Gerry’s and the rich history evident in every conversation. ½ Our film has screened across the globe: from Toronto to Lisbon - London to Melbourne. But recent screenings have seen very special guests attending: two of the few surviving men and women who built the bikes at the factory - John Griffiths and Christine Howard. John first. From a Welsh/Merseyside upbringing, John’s been a long-time stateside resident who’s worked in the USA as a business consultant, designer and entrepreneur. His contribution to our film is frank and forthright on what made Vincent HRD motorcycles so good - and what led to their downfall. The later enclosed Series D bikes were an ‘old man’s wheelchair’ in his view. Philip Vincent, in later years, would ‘hire and fire’ easily. Whilst at the factory John built and raced the bikes, tuning and racing a semi-works Comet with success. At our LA premier in August he was as forthright as ever during the Q&A, chaired by @evangelinesvintage and joining cast and crew for drinks after. John is young 90-something with a lust for life and brain which never stops turning over. The Vincent factory in Stevenage stills stands – now occupied and cared for by Alleyne’s School. We were able to film there, with their kind permission, with the Vincent family - and we interviewed several factory veterans who lived nearby. First shot is a #DaveNorvinBike picture of the late Jack Furness on his Comet - a charming RAF WW2 veteran who was Vincent Works foreman from 1949 to 1955. Narrato da Ichiban Moto @Ichiban Moto 'On Any Other Sunday', è vagamente basato sulle leggendarie sequenze di Mert Lawwill del film originale. Il regista Shaun Fenton racconta: "Tuttavia, non siamo mai riusciti a trovare il pilota giusto... finché non ci siamo imbattuti in Dave Schofield alla gara motociclistica Inappropriate di Malle Mile. Dave è senza pretese, affascinante, con una gioia di vivere contagiosa. Il suo rifiuto di prendersi troppo sul serio ci ha ispirato ad adottare un approccio molto diverso al nostro film tributo On Any Sunday. Una combinazione tra il carattere di Dave, le gare inappropriate al Malle Mile e il budget limitato, ci ha ispirato a creare un documentario parodia. Ci siamo presi la licenza dell'artista alterando la narrazione finale, Dave si ritira dall'evento con varie deboli scuse e introduciamo quattro contendenti che si contendono il trofeo. Inizialmente volevamo utilizzare la musica del film originale di Dominic Frontiere, ma non siamo riusciti a ottenere l'autorizzazione, quindi abbiamo utilizzato musica degli anni '70/'80 che strizza l'occhio alla colonna sonora originale del documentario. Abbiamo adattato la sceneggiatura originale delle sequenze di Mert Lawwill, imitato l'impostazione visiva e la struttura e cercato di essere fedeli al film originale con sottili riferimenti audio e visivi. Selections complete! The 16 participants in the 5th edition of MotoTematica Motorcycle Film Festival have been selected. As always, a lot of material arrived from all over the world and, as always, the selection was difficult. We are proud to have arrived at the 5th edition of MotoTematica Motorcycle Film Festival always offering you quality material and many hours of carefree lightness as only a movie theater can offer. We will again be screening, “en première” and free of charge, at the Casa del Cinema (Rome) the films, short films and documentaries selected in a 2-day marathon. Casa del Cinema is the ideal place to spend a few hours in the beautiful park of Villa Borghese, a stone’s throw from via Veneto and other Roman wonders. We count, as always, on the wonderful Roman “ottobrate” that have accompanied us so far. The bar and restaurant, attached to the Casa del Cinema, surrounded by greenery and in the shade of the pine trees, allow you to enjoy the very pleasant atmosphere of Rome. They knew what they were doing.’ For a golden period, the work of two brilliant minds – Philip Vincent and Sir William Lyons – saw the world's fastest motorcycles and sports cars emanate from the UK, in the form of the Vincent Black Shadow and Jaguar XK120. William Lyons’ roots were in motorcycling. His Swallow sidecars from the 1930s displayed early signs of the sleek design which marked out the cars which followed. And now a ground-breaking, virtual exhibition lifts the lid on Lyons’ life and work: from building sidecars, through the XK cars and Le Mans victories, to the E-Type and the XJ series. Vincent factory truck and float in the early 50s: around 70 years on from the nation’s last coronation. The old Works building – now part of the Thomas Alleyne Academy – stands in stark contrast to the vast factories of Triumph, BSA and Norton of the period. We were able to film in and around the factory – and introduce some of the remaining Vincents workers to Vincent’s daughter Dee, who lived there as a young girl, and grandson/Associate Producer Philip Vincent-Day. As Phil says in our film, the buildings where Vincents were built have ‘souls in the walls’ – in a minor way, like today’s coronation, living history. Bentley and Vincent are two of the greatest names of British automotive history. In the latest podcast from our friends at @horsepowerheritage, @speed_is_expensive executive producer @petergrimsdale talks about his book Racing in the Dark, which chronicles the amazing life of WO Bentley. The parallels with Vincent are striking. The year 1928 was key to both: WO launched his six-cylinder Speed Six racer, PCV launched his company. Their designs were ground-breaking in their fields, boasting phenomenal top speeds and gaining dramatic successes on the track and in record setting.
