•Ferrari Azul por segunda vez en la historia• Así es hace ya 60 años atrás en 1964 los monoplazas del Cavallino fueron pintados de color azul, en una época dónde los patrocinadores eran prácticamente inexistentes aún y los equipos pintaban sus coches de acuerdo al color de cada nacionalidad. La razón por la cuál Ferrari dejo atrás su típico color rojo (Rosso Corsa) fue debido a que aquel año 1964 la firma Ferrari intentó homologar varios de sus coches para correr en las 24 Horas de Le Mans, sin embargo su pedido fue rechazado porque sus coches tenían motor central a lo que la FIA respondió que no podían participar por este motivo y que los podía inscribir pero solo como prototipos, Enzo Ferrari el máximo manda más de la firma acudiría a la Federación Italiana de Automovilismo, sin embargo estos respondieron que no podían ayudarlo y ante el enojo de Enzo les declaró que sus coches no volverían a correr con el color Rosso Corsa nunca más. Esto pasó cuando John Surtees peleaba el campeonato de ese año y Ferrari tomó la decisión de entregar sus monoplazas de ese año al equipo norteamericano North American Racing Team para que los pintaran de color azul (El color de Estados Unidos en el automóvilismo), inscribiendo a estos monoplazas azules a la carrera dónde en la última ronda el también norteamericano John Surtees se coronaria campeón en su casa (Siendo el primer piloto de Estados Unidos en ganar el campeonato de F1) y siendo hasta el momento el único campeón tanto de Fórmula 1 como de Moto GP. . 🔵 Ferrari is set to incorporate blue colour in its iconic red livery in Miami Ferrari is set to announce a special blue livery at the Miami GP for the 60th anniversary of their original blue and white livery they ran in the last two races of 1964. The blue livery was run by Enzo as a form of a protest when Ferrari wanted to homologate a new car, the 250 LM but was denied eligibility by the FIA. The governing body could not see Ferrari building the requisite 100 cars, and were reportedly less open to persuasion due to past events. Ferrari withdrew its entry and raced with its Norrh American team. Officially there were no works Ferraris entered, but for all intents and purposes the Scuderia had not really withdrawn. Instead championship challenger John Surtees and team mate Lorenzo Bandini were suddenly entered under a new banner: the North American Racing Team. Operated by former racer Luigi Chinetti - an importer helping to put the Prancing Horse on the map in North America - NART were essentially a Ferrari satellite operation who had achieved significant sportscar success on American soil. 🇺🇸 The United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen - the penultimate race of the season - was the first race to witness the blue livery 🇲🇽 At the all-important season finale in Mexico. It was a Grand Prix that would go down in history - with fortune on his side, Surtees came through to finish second - and in doing so sealed the 1964 crown. American hero, Dan Gurney, fresh off winning the Formula One Belgian Grand Prix at Spa in an Eagle of his own design and construction and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Ford MKIV, leads motorbike turned auto racing world champion, John Surtees, through Turn 5 at Road America. Both of these machines are Lola T70 chassis, but Gurney's is powered by a 351ci Small-Block Ford motor with Westlake heads, while Surtees is using similar displacement Chevrolet Small-Block power in the back. As always, massive crowds gather to watch the cars power up the hill to Turn 6. This race was dominated by the factory Papaya Orange McLaren M6B's of Bruce and Denny, but Bruce had mechanical issues leaving Denny Hulme to take the win. Mark Donohue, in yet another Lola, came 2nd, and Surtees would come 3rd - the only 3 cars on the lead lap of the 50 lap race! Vor 60 Jahren, 1964, stieg Honda in die Formel 1 ein Ein Jahr, nachdem das 1948 von Soichiro Honda gegründete Unternehmen nach etlichen Motorrädern 1963 auch erste Autos produzierte, stieg die japanische Marke quasi „wie aus dem Nichts“ gleich auch in die Formel 1 mit komplettem Auto ein. Chefingenieur Yoshio Nakamura stellte noch 1963 den Prototyp RA 270 auf die Räder, erstes Auto für die Rennstrecke wurde der RA 271 mit Alu-Monocoque - Ferrari und Brabham bauten noch keins -, aber auch noch bestückt mit Hilfsrahmen hinten. Der im Formel 1 und auf dem Nürburgring unerfahrene US-Amerikaner Ronnie Bucknum (Bild oben bzw. Bild 1) wurde 13.. In Monza und Watkins Glen fiel er aus, in Monza allerdings schon aufgerückt auf Platz sieben. 1965 gewann dann Richie Ginther (Bild links unten bzw. Bild 2 in Spa) im RA 272 den Grand Prix Mexiko, 1967 John Surtees im Dreiliter-V12-RA 300 den italienischen Grand Prix in Monza. Our 1st XI football boys played their annual fixture against an Old Worthians team for the Henry Surtees Memorial Cup last Sunday. At the end of the game, Edwina Surtees unveiled a new memorial in the Pitstop for her late brother Henry, a former Worth student. Há exatos 7 anos perdíamos John Norman Surtees, o único campeão em duas e quatro rodas. Surtees foi campeão mundial de Motovelocidade (atual MotoGP) em 1958, 1959 & 1960 nas 350cc e em 56, 58, 59 & 60 nas 500cc. Ao fim de 1960 e após se sagrar campeão em duas categorias do mundial de motovelocidade, Surtees se muda para a Fórmula 1 onde inicialmente guiou pela Lotus e posteriormente foi campeão com a Ferrari em 1964. Surtees também foi campeão da temporada inaugural da Can-Am em 1966 e além disso tem uma vitória nas 12 Horas de Sebring de 1963, onde teve o italiano Ludovico Scarfiotti como companheiro a bordo de uma Ferrari 250P. John Surtees sofria de uma insuficiência respiratória e ficou internado no Hospital St. Georges, em Londres. Seu estado de saúde fez com que fosse internado na terapia intensiva, onde permaneceu até morrer na tarde de 10 de março de 2017. It’s a shame, but books really don’t sell any more. Look at the value of a set of Motocourse nowadays; a fraction of what it used to be. When these came into sight I was interested in the Gilera and Bandirola titles but not the rest. Then I opened one to see John Surtees’ bookplate. I bought them. I think the rarest is the Moto Gilera one, published in 1983, and the most obscure is the Bandirola biography which is mainly wonderfully atmospheric photos. The Gilera title still has some Post-it notes annotated by Surtees himself. ‘Motoradder’ has a lengthy dedication from the author to John.
