Uprooted: The Olympic Tribe is a powerful documentary highlighting the Dayak-Bahao people’s struggle against deforestation in Borneo. Filmmakers Balint Revesz, Angus MacInnes, and Jamie Wolfeld capture the community’s deep ties to their ancestral land. Together with three emissaries of the village, they embark on a journey that leads from the rainforests of Borneo to the Japanese metropolis of Tokyo, where tropical timber is being used in the stadiums for the Olympic Games. I haven’t written for a few weeks. There just hasn’t been time. But last night deserves to be chronicled: It’s 1 am in San Pedro de Atacama, a ghost pueblo nestled in the Chilean desert. I found myself at my friend’s desert house with no taxis in sight, so I had to arrange for a private driver to take me to the pueblo at 1 am, despite my bus back to Bolivia departing at 3 am. And there I was, in the middle of a deserted village at night, with the bus terminal closed and not a soul in sight. The desert nights are bone-chillingly cold, felt like swallowing an ice cream in one gulp while your brain freezes. I’ll never forget the most freezing night I ever spent, in the Sahara desert, when I almost had to spoon with the camel. Returning to the pueblo, as we say in Portuguese, there was “um ambiente de cortar a faca” – an atmosphere so thick you could cut it with a knife. Street dogs roamed the streets in packs, barking as if it were the end of the world. Suddenly, a large one-eyed dog approached me, barking fiercely. I ignored him as I always do – street dogs crave attention, and ignoring them usually turns them into your best friends. For those who don’t know, I used to be terrified of street dogs after being attacked several times. But my fear vanished when I traveled to Georgia and found myself hiking surrounded by big bear-like dogs. Now, I love them, especially after last night. This dog lay down next to my backpack, patiently waiting alongside me – him for food, and me for the bus. Suddenly, a shady character emerged from the shadows with a knife and wanted to rob me. But my new furry friend jumped on him and chased him off until he vanished from sight. My buddy returned, wagging his tail, and I rewarded him with all the food I had for the bus. He waited patiently until I boarded, and then sadly, I had to leave him behind. It’s amazing how animals can become the central characters of our stories... and that guy is probably still running 🐾🐕✨ This picture is me at a train cemetery in Bolivia. I still don’t understand why they left all those trains to die. The buses here are way too slow. Oh well, como se diz em português, ‘passaram de cavalo para burro.
