STRESS!!! It’s suggested by much of the medical research that up to 90% of diseases are potentially triggered by STRESS. I know a move to the South of France 🥐🥐🍷☀️seems like rosé all day but we have had so many challenges the last two weeks coupled with emotional overload and a four month summer (send help 🤣) that I could feel the stress building in my body. 🥵 👩🏻⚕️So while we in the world of functional medicine focus so much on the physical (that’s of course important) we also have to continue to educate and promote the importance of stress management. I want to propose something new to you. Yes, I love to suggest supplements, sleep, mindfulness, deep breathing, aromatherapy, gentle exercise, counseling, massages, acupuncture/acupressure, reflexology as ways to mitigate stress but we still often leave the spiritual health to the side. WHY?! When we know even research says it’s a core tenant of the pillars of wellness. While it’s easy to turn to a croissant, a French dessert or a glass of fabulous wine here for stress management or even just my go to of aromatherapy and supplements and more sleep, I have been practicing what I preach. I have been turning to my faith in this time of crazy relocation to another country. I sat the other day, and instead of taking 45 min alone to workout, I read my Bible and wrote in my prayer journal. And what I heard in my heart changed everything and reminded me again this was worth the effort. My faith relieved my stress because I was reminded of WHO stands behind, beside and in front of me!!! That night Emmeline and I just stared at all the stars placed in the sky by our great God. We talked about how much we miss home and how living in Europe is harder than just “staying for a while” and how starting over is a lot of work. Then we prayed and thanked God for the reminder in the stars of how great He is. If I am true to honoring all aspects of wellness I am here to encourage you that the next time you feel the stress building to just try prayer, even if you don’t believe it works you just might be surprised by the outcome. (and we do love to add frankincense to our prayer time!) 🙌🏻

Goodbye Münster, Hello Lyon! 1 week in Lyon already 🎉🎉🎉 7 days ago we finally finished the move we started more than a month ago. On June 30th, we left Germany with our 2 kids (8 and 1 year old) to move to the metropole of Lyon. We chose to buy a house outside the city center because we wanted to make the most out of the life outdoor and the nice weather. Although it’s a big adjustment from a life on foot in Münster, we think that we are going to be very happy here. (Mainly my 8 years old son who now has a the freedom to jump and run around when he wants to). Coming from the north of Germany, Lyon feels like quite the change. Also we are for the first time home owners!!! That’s also a challenge. All our life savings went into 4 walls and it’s pretty scary… But renting is nearly impossible in France and in Lyon especially. So there was no real choice there. ~ reflectie na 1 jaar Frankrijk en internationaal verhuizen ~ 1 jaar geleden lieten we België definitief achter ons. We kwamen hier in Frankrijk 's ochtends aan, na een lange rit met de nodige obstakels, met een volgeladen vrachtwagen, 3 auto's en 2 karren. Inclusief 4 kippen, een hond, een kat en 2 kids 😃. Een nieuw leven en een groot avontuur tegemoet. Ja, we hadden goed nagedacht en ja, we hadden ons goed voorbereid (dachten we). Zoals met eerdere grote beslissingen hadden we vooral heel goed naar ons gevoel en naar elkaar geluisterd en niet naar alle goede (en minder goede) adviezen 😅. We hebben de maanden en weken voor we besloten definitief te verhuizen veel gepraat. Ook de kinderen werden op hun manier betrokken in onze beslissing. Niet alles was gepland, want we wilden vooral ook vrijheid en kijken waar ons avontuur ons bracht. 1 ding hadden we wel afgesproken. Na 1 jaar gingen we opnieuw met ons 4 aan tafel zitten om te kijken of iemand twijfelde, iemand ongelukkig was, iemand terug wou naar België. Want we moesten allevier gelukkig zijn. We deden dit met vier of niet. Vandaag was dus dé dag. Aan tafel zaten we niet, maar wel in de auto. Allevier zeiden we volmondig ja op de vraag of we hier wilden blijven. Waar de kinderen er heel spontaan aan toevoegden "Hier zijn we echt gelukkig." Natuurlijk missen ze hun vriendjes uit België af en toe. En ik mijn praktijk met de yogalessen, workshops, kinderen en volwassenen. Dus nee, we komen niet terug. 😃 Als ik 1 ding het afgelopen jaar geleerd heb, is dat we als mens te vaak hetzelfde blijven doen, gewoon omdat dat in onze comfortzone ligt. Ik wil niet iedereen aanmoedigen om naar een ander land te verhuizen hoor 😉 maar rij eens via een andere weg naar huis, ga een nieuwe hobby doen, sluit nieuwe vriendschappen, leer een nieuwe taal, ga eens ergens anders op vakantie,... verruim je leven. ~ step by step ~ Elke week pas ik kleine dingen aan in mijn leven. Als je meteen je hele leven aanpakt, duurt de verandering meestal niet lang. Dus hou het klein. Als start is het belangrijk om te weten wat je doelen zijn... wat wil jij bereiken? Klinkt misschien moeilijk om zo meteen een antwoord op te geven. Maak het dan kleiner en concreter: waar wil jij meer van in je leven? En waar wil je minder van in je leven? En stel die vragen regelmatig aan jezelf. Noteer je antwoord. Pas aan. "Herschrijf". Herhaal. "Herdenk". Wij (mijn gezin en ik) hebben het afgelopen jaar grote veranderingen doorgevoerd in ons leven. Maar die leken eigenlijk niet zo heel drastisch, omdat we alles in kleine stapjes hebben genomen. We maakten van onze droomvakantiebestemming onze thuis. Ik creëerde jobs waarmee ik overal kan werken wanneer ik wil. Ik kies bewust voor contacten met mensen die ik graag heb en geniet ervan. Voor iets anders pas ik. Ik eet bewust geen vlees meer, gewoon omdat ik dat beslist heb. We laten essentiële oliën ons leven verrijken, omdat we op weg zijn naar een natuurlijker en gezonder leven. Maar al deze stappen deden we niet in 1 dag. Dit kostte weken, maanden, zelfs jaren (als je de mentale voorbereiding meerekent). Ik ben heel erg mee in het gezegde "als jij niets verandert, verandert er niets en blijft alles altijd hetzelfde". Het is aan ons om dingen te veranderen. En misschien is het niet meteen duidelijk waar je op termijn naartoe wil. Dat is niet erg! Maar wat wil jij nu? Daar draait het om. Waar wil jij meer van in het leven? The smile & the pose say it all! 🌟🌟Great relief and joy he could join his friends on a school trip to Greece - all in French! After months of emailing, calling, standing in line to get a French document for him, and still not getting it, we were told on Good Friday he could not fly out on Easter Monday. It was a very sad 😕Friday afternoon after spending 4 hours on the phone with the American Embassy in Paris/his French teacher/school administrators. 🌟🌟 Late Friday night- a little Easter miracle - the decision was overruled by a head administrator as long as his dad tagged along! 9 days and counting until we step through the door in to our new home, our new life. Time has seemed to simultaneously speed up and slow down..inexplicably. The days are short with a newborn to care for, and long when I dream of France. Winter is quickly outstaying it’s welcome and spring is so close I can smell it on these unusually warm days. I look forward to discovering each season here and all that it has to offer. The bright colors of spring, the warm summer nights with windows open, and cozy nights by the fire in winter. After all, that’s what life is, isn’t it ? A series of seasons, each one succeeding the last. Despite how much we may love it or hate it, the seasons come and go, marking time. Before phones, watches, and even calendars, we humans marked time by the seasons, the rising and setting of the sun and the phases of the moon 🌙 We were more in tune with nature and the planets. Advent 2022: Hark the Herald Angels Sing - our favorite Christmas carol. “Peace on earth & Mercy Mild, God & Sinners Reconciled.” The Mild Mercy of God. Even though the carol is a work of art, Charles Wesley said he wrote it, in 1739, so that the poor & illiterate would learn good doctrine. In fact, the best of art teaches us the best of faith. He wrote it a year after his conversion, inspired by the church bells in London on Christmas Day. I particularly love: the Mild Mercy of God. We talk about mercy a lot. We don’t talk as much about mild. It literally means: not severe or harsh. I prefer the word in French: doux. It’s the same word for soft or sweet. Is God’s Mercy sweet to us?
