Kite paper dandelions After our great success with the puffball wreath, we are even more in love with dandelions than before. As Kinma is set in 5 acres of beautiful bush land in Terrey Hills we co-habit the space with many creatures which include mammals, reptiles and insects. One of the core aspects of our philosophy is Respect - for the environment, each other and ourselves. We encounter many insects at Kinma and we teach children what that respect looks like when it comes to our insect friends. It's #CreativeReadAndPlay week 💚 And our last book of this week is: 🌈 The Hidden Rainbow by Christie Matheson 💐 💐 It's such a cute spring book, where a bee wakes up from winter and is hungry. It inspires the kids to look and discover colors in Nature 🌈💜 💚 Our plan was to walk around our complex looking for flowers and make a flower shop; but since we didn't have time to do this, we walked around our house and made a "Plant Shop" 🪴🪻 💐 We were surprised to find a lot of cute flowers, weeds, and grasses. [SAN GIORGIO] Il 23 aprile si festeggia San Giorgio: diversi paesi vicino a noi hanno questo patrono e i bambini mi hanno chiesto di saperne di più. Abbiamo così parlato di ⚔️ San Giorgio cavaliere che uccide il temibile 🐲 drago e di come questa leggenda sia comune a molte località... ... dal famoso 🇪🇸 Sant Jordi di Barcellona, dove trionfano 📖 libri e 🌹rose (come quella nata dal sangue del drago ucciso dal santo per liberare Montblanc)... ... al prode ✝️ eroe religioso che liberò la città di Selem in Libia e la principessa Silene in cambio della loro conversione al cristianesimo (racconto a cui si sono ispirati 🖌pittori come Paolo Uccello e Raffaello)... ... per finire con il più nostrano 🇮🇹 Giorgio brianzolo, che sconfisse la bestia per evitare che la principessa Cleodolinda venisse da essa divorata (grazie all'aiuto dei fiori del 🌳 sambuco, albero dalle sette virtù). Proprio quest'ultima storia si sovrappone con la tradizione di preparare i "pan de mej", panini con 🌽farina di mais (un tempo di miglio) aromatizzati con fiori di sambuco e consumati con 🥛panna: a San Giorgio, i fatti, venivano rinnovati i contratti tra allevatori e lattai ed era tempo di festeggiare! Abbiamo provato a prepararlo anche noi con il sambuco appena raccolto! 🏴 La croce di San Giorgio, bandiera dei Genovesi, fu adottata come vessillo da diverse altre compagini: Milanesi, Crociati e Inglesi, dopo aver visto che le navi nemiche evitavano chi mostrava questo simbolo data la fama di imbattibilità di Genova. The humble dandelion, scientifically known as Taraxacum officinale, is often considered to be an unwanted weeds in the garden, however, historically, it has long been valued for its medicinal properties. Dandelion leaves are rich in vitamins A, C, and K, as well as minerals like iron, calcium, and potassium. The roots also contain beneficial compounds which have anti-inflammatory properties. Medicinally, dandelion extracts, teas, and tinctures are used today for various purposes, including supporting digestive health, promoting healthy skin, and even as a mild diuretic. At this time of year, we often gather the flower heads to make an infused oil (being sure to leave behind more than we take for early pollinators.) It's useful for skin health, helping to moisturise dry skin, soothe irritations, and promote overall skin wellbeing. Also containing compounds that exhibit anti-inflammatory properties, it can be used topically to calm skin inflammation, such as minor rashes, eczema, or insect bites. My own favourite use is for muscle relief. When massaged into sore muscles or joints, dandelion-infused oil may help alleviate minor pains and reduce inflammation. Can you BEElieve it? I spotted this little friend on a walk and thought at first that it was a yellow-face bumblebee. It’s not, though—it’s a type of hoverfly. Usually it’s a little easier to tell the difference, but the antennae are the biggest clue here. A bee has longer, jointed antennae like an ant’s, while flies have these short poky antennae. I’ve been watching for different kinds of bee-mimics since writing A Bee or Not a Bee?, but this might be the best (and fluffiest) mimic that I’ve seen so far. Exploring the Botanical Garden in Cluj-Napoca. Botany, the science of plants, is a particularly important area of interest for the 6-12 years old children. EARTH DAY THEMED CLASS 🌍 To tie in with earth day earlier this week I planned some activities linked to this theme for my outdoor classroom today. One of the many plants that is a backdrop of my childhood memories is the Mountain Laurel and it is currently in full bloom. The flowers are fascinating because the anthers of the stamen are released like springs from the corolla when touched by an insect. This native shrub was formerly called "spoonwood" because its hardwood was used to make wooden spoons. The leaves were also used as a remedy for skin diseases. It is important to note that the entire plant is toxic to both humans and livestock. As a child, my brothers, cousins, and I used to pick Mountain Laurel leaves and throw them into our campfires to hear them crackle and pop like firecrackers. We had a fabulous start to our K-5 Spring Backyard Discovery program today. In celebration of earth day we cleaned up trash along the entrance to Ashland State Park. It was a beautiful afternoon so our adventure led us to the stream where many chose to take off their socks and shoes and dip their toes into the water (and mud!). Well, why not jump feet first into the joy of muddy adventures, puddle jumping, and dancing in the rain. Not only are we enjoying the season, but we’re also nurturing fine motor and gross motor skills through outdoor play in all sorts of weather! From honing balance while jumping in puddles to enhancing hand-eye coordination by creating mud pies, we’re learning new skills while having a blast! 🌸💦 Children will be naturally curious and want to explore the puddles and mud. Did you know that there are two Guided Journals that can be used alongside Exploring Nature with Children? One has print-style copywork pages, the contains other cursive-style copywork, so you would choose just one, appropriate for your child. Thousands of families find them helpful to support & structure their child's nature journaling. A child that is old enough to keep a nature journal will get the most out of a Guided journal, but I have heard from families with much younger children who have used the GJ to create a scrapbvook of sorts, adding photographs, drawings, and writing the child's narrations for them. I would suggest printing the pages a week or so at a time; it’s highly unlikely that you will use all the pages in the course of one year, and it’s helpful if you have any children with perfectionist tendencies, as you can easily reprint and replace any spoiled pages. Keep the completed pages in a binder then have them bound at the end of the year. It’s quite special for the child to have their work presented to them in this way.
