When is the best time to start a bedtime routine? Are you struggling to establish a consistent bedtime routine for your little one and time it well so they don’t get overtired? I get it! Parenting can be challenging, especially when it comes to ensuring our babies get the sleep they need to thrive and finding our downtime as tired parents (we need to thrive too!)✨ But did you know that a well-timed bedtime routine can make a world of difference in your baby’s sleep patterns? It true! Take an 8-month-old baby transitioning from 3 to 2 naps, for example. The awake time between those naps and right before bedtime creates sleep pressure and the drive to fall asleep.  Unfortunately, if your baby has been awake for longer than their little body can handle, it causes them to be overtired and makes it hard for them to fall and stay asleep at bedtime. This is because of cortisol, also known as the “stress” or “alert” hormone. It begins to rise as soon as your baby hits the awake-time threshold. 🚨 So when should you start your baby’s bedtime routine? Establishing consistent timing for your bedtime routine will help give your baby’s internal body clock a gentle nudge in the right direction. 👍 Aim for starting the routine about 30 minutes before bedtime, aligning with your baby’s natural sleep cues. Remember, every baby is different, so adjust the duration of this pre-sleep routine based on your little one’s age. Are you up in the night finding your little ones dummy? Because it’s fallen out of the cot or they don’t know where to find it? 🔎 Waking up regularly in the night to find and and replace a dummy is pretty tiring 🥱. Here are some quick tips to help to: ...stop the dummies from falling out of the cot ...to make finding the dummy easier for your little one ...plus extra tips to teach your little one how to find and replace the dummy themselves which works really well for lot’s of bubs once around 7/8 months 🌙 Use a comforter or sleep teddy that has a dummy loop or knot on it so that you can attach a spare. During awake time you can practice finding the spare dummy by having some play time in the cot and showing your little one where it is located on the comforter. Super helpful to let your little one practice putting it in themselves too – this will help them to know how to find it and replace it in the night. 🌙 Scatter several dummies in the cot – this way you’ve got more chance of at least one dummy remaining in the cot (unless you have a dummy thrower). 🌙 Purchase a glow in the dark dummy – easier for your little one to find it. 🌙 We don’t recommend using products like dummy chains or cot bumpers as they aren’t considered safe for sleeping. Does your baby's room have light peeking through the door frame? 🚪⁠ ⁠ Here's my sleep environment hack to get the room nice and dark without fancy baby sleep gadgets.⁠ ⁠ All you are going to need is one thing...⁠ ⁠ A dark single fitted sheet. ⬛⁠ ⁠ Place the sheet around the door (if you have a larger than the standard door, you may need to use a bigger sheet)⁠ ⁠ Sometimes you will need to play around with getting it around the corners just right, but it's so worth the payoff. Today we're chatting naps and, importantly, HOW to drop one when the time's right (there's a right time and a not-so-right time)⁠ ⁠ Let's start with a rough age guide to nap ratio:⁠ ⁠ 🍼 Newborns – 4/5 naps⁠ In the newborn phase, your baby will have fragmented and disorganised sleep⁠ ⁠ 🍼 4 to 7/8 months – 3 naps⁠ Your baby should start to consolidate their sleep into 3 structured naps⁠ ⁠ 🍼 9 to 14 months – 2 naps⁠ It's around here you'll drop to 2 naps, dropping the last nap between 4-5pm in preparation for a BIG SLEEP⁠ ⁠ 🍼 15-18 months – 1 nap⁠ Try dropping the first-morning nap and have one long consolidated sleep around lunchtime⁠ ⁠ 🍼 2.5 to 3 years – NAP-FREE!⁠ Your bub will likely drop their mid-day nap around this time. Sleeping through the night 🌙 ....... the meaning of this is often misunderstood??? We want to fill you in on a not so secret, secret 🤫 We don’t really use the term ‘sleeping through the night’ with our clients. Because NO ONE sleeps through the night 😲 Not me. Not you. And not your baby or toddler. Say whattttttttt???? We sleep in sleep cycles and at the end of each cycle we wake up before beginning a new sleep cycle – we don’t sleep 11-12 hours straight without waking. We all wake throughout the night but many of our awakenings are for such a short moment in time that we don’t even know we have done it. Other times we rouse more and then we have to put ourselves back to sleep again from a more awake state which takes a bit more effort. As to whether a baby can “sleep through the night” what is really being asked is “could my baby sleep all night and return to sleep into another sleep cycle on their own”. They might... depending on this 👇 🌝 Baby’s age? 🌝 Baby’s growth? 🌝 Whether or not your baby still has / needs milk overnight? 🌝 Is the room conducive to quality sleep? 🌝 Does your baby have the right foundations in place to support long stretches of sound sleep? 🌝 Are there any negative forces having an effect on the quality of night sleep? 🌝 Does your baby know how to fall asleep and return to sleep? 🌝 Is it YOUR goal to have your baby sleeping without the need for much support throughout the night and is the goal realistic? But even when you might think they have slept through without ever waking... they haven’t. They might have transitioned into another cycle super seamlessly or you might have just not heard or noticed them awake when moving between one cycle to another. Remember those nights where you toss and turn a bit more and sometimes are awake a little longer before returning to sleep, kids do this too, we all do. The four-month sleep regression is the first of 5 regressions in your little one's sleep over the first couple of years. Unlike other sleep regressions, which pass with time, this regression does not go away. This is because the four-month regression is about a neurologically permanent change in your baby's sleep patterns. It's the transition from disorganised newborn sleep to more predictable sleep cycles. So it's really normal to see your baby wake up more often now. 😴 Your baby will now come to a distinct ending to each of their sleep cycles. This can look like waking every 2 hours overnight and every 45 minutes during the day. At the end of each cycle, we partially wake - adults and babies. Your baby will begin to awaken at the end of each sleep cycle, check in with their environment, and ensure everything is still the same as when they first started the sleep. If things are different from the start of when your baby fell asleep, it's more likely your baby will generally completely wake and cry out for your help, looking for the same level of support they had at the beginning of their previous sleep cycle. Because your baby is sleeping in these newly matured patterns, it's the perfect time to layer in some sleep foundations to encourage longer stretches of sleep day and night. But please don't stress if your baby does not fall asleep in their cot on their own just yet or can resettle themselves back to sleep; it takes time. Sleep regressions don't exist. ❌⁠ ⁠ Yeah, okay... but they kinda do. ⁠ ⁠ A sleep regression (or progression, whatever you like to call it) is when your baby has been sleeping well and suddenly has a few bumps in the road and hiccups. 😭⁠ ⁠ Sleep regressions generally last up to 2-6 weeks - depending on your baby and their developmental stage. Most of the time, it's because of development and the need to practice skills, have longer awake times, reduce sleep and adjust to their new milestones. Daytime sleep cycles are around 45 minutes long after your baby goes through the four-month sleep regression. By the 45-minute mark, your baby will either wake and need help to resettle or hopefully be able to settle into another sleep cycle. We can expect to hear our babies stir as they transition between sleep cycles. When a baby wakes up from a sleep cycle, they may not be able to get back to sleep without your help or a missing sleep association. 😴⁠ ⁠ There are two types of sleep in your baby's sleep cycle: non-rapid eye movement sleep and rapid eye movement sleep (Non-REM and REM sleep). ⁠ ⁠ Non-REM sleep is very restful, deep and restorative sleep. There is little movement, deep breathing, and a slow heart rate. 💗⁠ ⁠ REM sleep occurs after the non-REM sleeping period. REM sleep is an active stage of your baby's sleep cycle. The heart rate quickens, breathing becomes lighter and quicker, eye movements are rapid, and brain blood flow increases. A common misconception I hear is: “Sleep training” is about using cry-it-out and strict schedules. 😭⁠ ⁠ For some parents, sleep training means this... BUT... Here at The Sleeping Co, "sleep training" is about establishing your baby's sleep foundations. ⁠ ⁠ Sleep foundations are kind of like a house... Here’s some tips to help with extending your baby’s awake times. They are ready, if: 💜 Baby is a month older 💜 Baby isn’t showing sleep cues when they usually would 💜 Baby is taking longer to fall asleep 💜 Baby has started taking shorter naps but wakes happy 💜 Baby is resisting bedtime They aren’t ready, if: 💜 Baby is a month older 💜 Baby’s tired signs are still present at the same awake times as last month 💜 Baby is still settling to sleep happily at their current times 💜 Baby took a short nap when you tried to extend awake time and woke upset 💜 Baby woke within the first couple of hours of going to bed when you tried to extend awake time Awake time includes any time baby is awake, including feeding and wind-down time between one sleep to the next. As our little cherubs get older their awake times grow too 🌱 But how do we know when it’s time to increase their awake time? Check our yes and no lists above 👆 Increasing your LO’s awake time needs to happen when they are ready and not just because they are a month older. If we shift a LO’s awake time too early we can see all sorts of issues. Aside from them being cranky and upset it can really interfere with naps (ease of settles and duration) as well as night sleep (ease of settles, quality and length). 😴 If your baby is doing just fine on their current awake window and sleeping just as well as they usually would then you don’t need to increase their awake windows just yet.⁠ If your baby seems to have more energy during the end of their current awake time, isn’t displaying typical cues, is resisting sleep or not sleeping as well then it’s time to increase awake time. ⁠ ⁠If you are finding yourself in the “yes it might be time” scenarios for a repeated number of days then try increasing your LO’s awake time. It is okay to start small in 5/10 minute increases just to make sure your LO can tolerate the extra time. 👌 Remember there are no rules.

Is your little one having a split night? 🥱 Commonly split nights are caused by a scheduling issue. Things like: 🌙 Too much or not enough day sleep 🌙 Too much or too little awake time before bed Here’s some tips to nail the awake times between last nap and bedtime 👇 You’ll notice with awake windows there is a LOW – MAX range. If your little one is awake for long periods in the night and you are using the MAX end of their awake range, drop their awake time back. The awake length between waking from the last nap and going to bed for the night may vary from day to day and it’s really going to depend on how well your little one slept that afternoon. We’ve put together a few scenarios where a lower awake time may be more appropriate than the higher window and vice versa. 🌙 If your little one only slept for a single cycle of sleep or less for their last nap it’s likely they will be ready for bed at the lower end of their awake time. 🌙 If your little one took a longer sleep of around an hour or more for their last nap they may need the mid-max awake length before bedtime 🌙 If your little one had their last nap in the car it’s likely they won’t handle the max awake time before bed as motion naps aren’t as restorative as sleeping in the cot. 🌙 If your little one is showing obvious tired signs that they are ready for bed before the max awake time then it’s best to take their lead and not hold them out for bed. Rarely does holding a little one out for bed result in better or more night sleep. 🌙 For toddlers on one nap. Do you struggle with getting the timing right with your little ones sleep? 😴 Wondering if they are OVERTIRED or UNDER TIRED when trying to settle them? 😕 This is such a confusing topic but we are going to make it as simple as possible. Because as confusing as it can be TIMING IS IMPORTANT. Timing does matter and we have seen over and over again just how much settles and sleep can be impacted when the timing wasn’t quite right. To help you we’ve popped some things to look out for in the case that your little one is fighting settles and not sleeping well during the day or at night. To avoid an OVERTIRED little one: 🌙 Aim to not exceed age appropriate awake times but bear in mind that not all little ones can handle the highest range of awake time for their age group. 🌙 As a general rule a baby can usually only handle their maximum awake window where their previous sleep was a “restorative nap” by restorative we mean over an hour. For naps less than an hour we often see little ones ready to sleep again at the low – mid range of awake time. For naps over an hour little ones may handle the mid to max range of awake time before needing to sleep again. 🌙 To help with timing - look for tired signs during awake time. Is your baby displaying any of the typical tired cues before the max awake time? Tired cues can be found in our feed. To avoid an UNDER TIRED little one: ⭐Sometimes we over compensate and on days where a little one is having a bad nap day we can worry and keep putting them down at the lower end of their awake time or even less to try and “make up” for sleep. If your little one doesn’t have enough sleep pressure though they will fight sleep and not sleep as well. ⭐If you are putting your baby down at the lower end of their awake window and you are seeing any of the under tired signs listed above then try extend their awake window. You have a range of awake time to experiment with so start off with a 10 minute adjustment and trial from there. Share these tips with another parent 🤍

If your little one feels neutral or cool they are on the cooler side. Since temps tend to dip lowest around 4/5 am, preparing for this chill is the best approach. Here's how to handle the bedtime warmth contrasting with cooler nighttime temperatures: 🌙 Dress them for the chilliest part of the night. Ever wondered why your baby wakes up at the crack of dawn? ⁠ ⁠ Early wakes are considered any time between 5:00 - 6:00 am and the reasons for these wakes can range from:⁠ ⁠ 🍼 Light coming into the room ⁠ 🍼 Coldness at that time of the morning⁠ 🍼 Their bedtime is too late, causing them to be overtired⁠ 🍼 The first nap of the day is happening too early⁠ 🍼 Getting too much or too little day sleep⁠ 🍼 You may not be giving them enough time to resettle themselves back to sleep⁠ 🍼 Hunger⁠ 🍼 And, of course, the notorious influence of birds (IYKYK).⁠ ⁠ Did you know there is a simple solution to fixing these early rises?⁠ ⁠ If your little one decides to wake up at 5 am, the simple solution to starting the day with success is treating it as if they had woken up at 2 am, choose your ideal wake-up time and stick with your chosen settling method until then.⁠ ⁠ It might feel intense and challenging in the short term, but the results will be worth it. ⁠ ⁠ Remember that giving them some space is okay if your little one is fussing but not in full cry mode. They might just need a little resettling time due to the low sleep pressure here. ⁠ ⁠ Having a plan in place for those mornings when your little one doesn't quite want to hit the snooze button will save you from feeling like the day is already off track. While dummies can calm babies and extend their Zs, there's a downside as they grow older. Midnight dummy replacements might become a nightly routine, and disruptions can occur if your baby wakes up seeking it mid-nap or during the night. 😴⁠ ⁠ From around 6 months, teaching your baby to find and replace their dummy becomes an achievable goal with practice and consistency.⁠ ⁠ However, consistency may only come around 8 months. How to find the right awake time for your little one? ⁠ ⁠ As your baby grows, so does their need for awake time, which is staying awake longer and sleeping less during the day.⁠ ⁠ 🕰️To find your baby's awake time to support good naps, first start with an age-appropriate awake time. Begin experimenting with this time throughout the day in between their naps. ⁠ ⁠ ➡️ For younger babies, experiment with 5-15 minutes on either side of that time. ⁠ ⁠ ➡️ For older babies and toddlers, the time to experiment might be 15-30 minutes on either side of the recommended age-appropriate awake time.⁠ ⁠ If you need to stretch your little one’s awake time, gradually extend the time in 5-15 minute increments each day and adjust it to find the perfect balance for your baby’s specific needs.⁠ ⁠ Experimenting with awake times?
