So much of what parents are taught about sleep is based on cultural beliefs rather than biological wisdom. In my upcoming course and book, I'm going to be talking a lot about how Aware Parenting differentiates between sleep practices that based on cultural beliefs, and which are based on understanding the innate release and relaxation response of babies and children. If you want to understand more about this – before doors open to the live round of the course – and before the book comes out, I've just updated my free PDF on Sound Sleep and Secure Attachment with Aware Parenting. If you're on my main list, I've just sent it out. If you'd like to read it, you can do so by signing up to my main list (link in bio or comment PDF below. These 5.5 month old twins and their dads did a fantastic job! Step 1 in their custom plan was dropping the dream feed - that alone helped tremendously with reducing additional wake-ups overnight. We implemented a few other changes to their sleep environment and schedule, and got really intentional about their routine, all of which got them to a great spot of consistent, long naps and sleeping through the night 💤❤️. Worth noting: not every babe their age will consistently sleep through the night - some might need that one feed/nurse for a bit longer, and that’s a-okay! It’s always worth trying though, and it’s definitely possible to get very restorative sleep with a quick feed/nurse overnight. #babysleep #sleeptraining #sleeptrainingsuccess #beforeandafter #sleepconsultant #twins

💤 TIRED SIGNS 💤 A lot of sleep advice is based on looking at and acting on a babies "tired signs" when deciding when to offer sleep. I find this such a confusing and tricky approach! Here's why I don't love the "just go off tired signs approach" Disclaimer: Yes yes, I'm well aware that there are babies who clearly show tired signs and going off these and these alone is working out great for that individual mum and bub HOWEVER, it can be super confusing and unclear for a huge majority of us! If you're in the latter camp, read on.... - Tired signs are confusing AF. irritability, rubbing eyes, yawning, spacing out or gazing off in the distance, red eyebrows, sucking on their fists etc. All these can for sure be tired related BUT they can also be for reasons around hunger, boredom, overstimulation, under stimulation or just general baby behaviour indicating absolutely nothin' at all and they're genuinely just enjoying having a good old gaze off into the distance- ha! Going off a series of "signs" can often mean we try to settle babies way too early because the signs were in fact bub just doing what babies do! - Not all babies actually show typical tired signs. Sure, some babies are super obvious when they're tired and its a no brainer that they're probs due a sleep asap however there are lots of babies that exhibit zero signs of being ready to sleep. I've met many bubs that can go from being happy and content playing, to tucked in and asleep within minutes & showed none of the stock standard tired signs in the lead up to being asleep despite being well and truely ready to fall asleep well and quickly. - Many bubs wake in the morning or from naps exhibiting several of the 10 zillion tired signs despite being pretty well rested, but if we're offering sleep based on tired signs does this mean the bub needs to be sent back to bed or resettled?! How confusing! - Instead of focusing on tired signs for nap and bed timings, I recommend working off more of age appropriate awake windows and trialling and erroring timings with loosely a similar schedule each day #sleepnurse #sleepconsultant #tiredsigns #babysleep #babysleephealth #sydneysleephelp #sydneysleepconsultant

Does your baby's room have light peeking through the door frame? 🚪 Here's my sleep environment hack to get the room nice and dark without fancy baby sleep gadgets. All you are going to need is one thing... A dark single fitted sheet. ⬛ Place the sheet around the door (if you have a larger than the standard door, you may need to use a bigger sheet) Sometimes you will need to play around with getting it around the corners just right, but it's so worth the payoff. You'll be amazed how dark this will get your baby's sleep environment. I used a single dark, fitted sheet on Billy's door until he was 2 years old because his room was in such a bright area of our home. 💡 Plus… Billy also had cardboard on his windows and he now only has a small blanket over his window… You honestly don’t need every single fancy gadget to make sleep environments perfect for sleep. 💗 #sleepconsultant #sleepingbabies #aussiemums #sleepybabies #parentinghelp #parentingsupport #sleepconsulting #safesleep #babysleeptips #babysleepexpert #childsleepconsultant #infantsleepconsultant #sleepconsultants #babysleepconsultant #sleepregression #babysleep #sleepconsulting #parentingsupport #aussiemum #aussiekids #goldcoastmums #perthmum #ohheymamas #mumsinbusiness #mumswithhustle #perthmumsandbubs #perthfamily #perthbaby #perthmumtribe #mummasofperth

NAP TIPS // We are going to be honest: Naps are tough. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 💤 But, it is possible, moms and dads: Your child can be an amazing napper. With persistence and A LOT of consistency you can do it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4 steps to help get your baby to sleep longer: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1️⃣ Don’t assume the nap is over when they wake after 30-40 minutes. It’s not. Stop. Wait. And listen. Let them practice soothing themselves to sleep first before you go to them. The only guarantee if you go to them right away is that they won’t fall back asleep and they won’t get that restorative sleep they need throughout the day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2️⃣ The darker the better. Darkening up your child’s room with black out shades can help with the release of that awesome sleep hormone melatonin, which will aid in making your baby nice and drowsy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3️⃣ Quiet is best. Introduce a white noise machine that runs continuously throughout his nap. This consistent sound will help lull him into a deep and restorative sleep. All sound machines must be turned at the lowest volume and placed farthest away from the crib. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4️⃣ Routine isn’t only for bedtime. You can incorporate a short naptime routine before your baby’s nap. We recommend giving yourself at least 30 minutes to have a nice, relaxed bedtime routine. Condense this routine for naps to about 10 minutes or so. For instance bring baby to the nursery, dim the lights, change their diaper, and read 1 story. This can help cue baby that naptime is coming. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🎉 You’ve got this! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Are naps a struggle for you right now? #naptime #naptimehustle #bringbackbedtime #sleeptips #naps #needanap #shortnaps #shortnapstruggle #30minsnap #sleep #ineedanap #whywontyounap #babysleeptips #imsotired #babysleep #hamontmoms #hamiltonmoms #burlingtonmamas #miltonmommies #oakvillemoms #ottawamoms #ottawalife

BABIES 🧡 Many people ask when the right time is to begin implementing positive sleep associations and sleep guidance - the answer is.... from birth or in the lead up to birth. From the moment our little ones are born, it is a great idea to set up your little one's sleep environment correctly both for safe sleep and to set up those positive sleep associations (dark room, white noise, swaddle etc). As your little one grows, sleep is one of the most important elements to ensure they are happy, healthy and thriving, so we want to do what we can to support their sleep. Creating a safe, secure and comfortable environment (much like they were accustomed to in the womb), will help your little one sleep better and longer. Positive sleep associations will then remain the same as they grow and they will learn the patterns that when certain things happen (dark room, white noise, wind down etc) it is "sleep time". These associations can also help them to link their sleep cycles. So why not start now!! 😊 Need some help or have some questions? A beautiful picture to take to bed at the end of the first day of Maternal Mental Health Week. A reminder that wherever you are and at what ever stage of the motherhood journey you are, you are not alone. So I hope you and your babies have a restful night but if not..... Somewhere out there, there are other parents pacing up and down in the small hours, desperate for sleep. You are not alone. I first shared this picture around 2021, it struck a chord with me then and still does. Sadly I don't know where the picture comes from but very happy to give credit to this wonderful work if anyone knows. Here's what to expect with your 7-month-old baby's sleep. You'll see that the month may be going through a lot of emotional and physical milestones, and between the six-month sleep regression and eight-to-ten-month sleep regression, which can happen as early as seven months. At seven months, some babies have never recovered from the four-month sleep regression and are still waking up every 30 to 45 minutes during the day and every one to two hours overnight. For other babies, they may have been sleeping relatively well, but for some babies, they can be waking up more frequently and experiencing early morning wakes or reverting back to short naps. If your baby is unable to self-settle on their own, working on these skills should result in an improvement in their sleep overnight and during naps. After the four-month sleep regression, the other sleep regressions are temporary, which commonly coincide with a physical or emotional milestone. Practicing your baby's skills during their wakeful windows will help your baby to master these skills faster. Sometime between seven to eight months, your baby will develop object permanence. This is when your child knows that objects continue to exist even though they can no longer be seen or heard. As a result of the development of object permanence between seven to eight months, your baby's separation anxiety can peak, so they may seem extra clingy. Plenty of one-on-one time and creating a strong attachment will really help your little one through this stage. Need more help with your little one? I have a online sleep program for 5-18 month old babies! Fatemi sapere nei commenti, vi leggo 🩷 #safesleep #sleeptraining #sleepcoaching #sleepingtroughthenight #babysleep #bedtime #sleepconsultant #naptransition #babysleeping #naps #sleepwell #sleephabits #dssleepcoaching #sleepconsult #sleepcoach #sleepbaby #sleepingbaby

Have you ever been told that if you could just get some sleep, everything would be okay? Have you ever been made to believe that your sadness, worry, or overwhelm is due to sleep deprivation? Well, let me clear something up: Sleep deprivation DOES NOT cause Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs). It’s a myth that needs busting, pronto. Now, I’m not a medical professional, so a quick disclaimer: the following is not medical advice. If you’re struggling, or know somebody who might be, reach out to your healthcare provider or a perinatal mental health specialist. Here’s the deal: The only PMAD with a sleep correlation is perinatal bipolar disorder. In this case, lack of sleep can trigger an existing condition. Why does this matter? And how does it relate to sleep training? Many mothers, who might be struggling with their mental health, are told to sleep train as the fix-all remedy. But here’s the issue: If a mum is already battling depression or anxiety, telling her to go against her instincts, values, and maybe even parenting style can exacerbate her struggles. Imagine feeling like a failure because you can’t ignore your child’s cries or leave the house to escape them. How do you think that affects a struggling mum? Like a failure, right? Does a mum grappling with her mental health need that added guilt? I believe pushing sleep training as the magic fix does more harm than good. That’s why, as a sleep coach, I prioritise maternal mental health in my work. As a mum, your well-being impacts your journey and your baby’s. And your mental health can significantly affect your little one’s sleep. So, instead of prescribing sleep training, let’s listen to mums who seek help. Let’s notice the red flags and provide support. If sleep training didn’t work for you, there’s nothing wrong. It takes courage to admit what doesn’t work for your family. And if it worked for you, please know there is no judgment here. Sleep training works for some parents and that’s perfectly fine. But let’s not pretend it’s the only solution or that it’s for the baby’s sake. One more thing: Women can recover from perinatal depression even if they are sleep deprived.

This comes as a shocker to a lot of families! Parents often try putting their newborns to bed fairly early, only for them to wake again at 9 or 10 pm 🫠 Newborn’s sleep cycles aren’t fully developed yet and because of this they’re only sleeping in short bursts! Going for a slightly later bedtime is often the better choice because it is more in tune with what your baby naturally needs 🐑 SLEEP TIP! 🐑 Your baby’s longest stretch of sleep is typically the first one, and this can be beneficial for you as well! That’s because then you’ll get a solid first stretch yourself! Have questions about your newborn’s sleep? Lets chat! MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT FEEDS FOR NEWBORNS ~ it will be necessary for your baby to eat in the middle of the night for the first couple of months, but there are things you can do to ensure the stretches of sleep that follow are as long as possible: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ~ Make sure any night feed is a full feed. Don’t feed just enough to get them back to sleep. Putting in the extra minutes of work to get a full feed can buy you hours more of sleep. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ~ Keep your baby actively eating as they nurse or bottle feed. This may mean you need to nudge them a bit. Tickle their feed, nudge their jaw, pump their arm, etc. That extra effort pays off. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ~ In the beginning it can help to do a diaper change between sides or mid-feed. This wakes baby up enough to ensure they eat as much as possible for the rest of the feed. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ~ Take the time to burp baby well and keep them upright for a bit, especially if they struggle with reflux or painful gas. It’s ok if baby falls back asleep during this time. Their comfort is the priority and will also help sleep progress faster. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Questions about newborns and feeds? Drop them in the comments! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #sleepconsultant #newborns #infantsleep #sleeptraining #ocmoms #newmom #babysleep #parenting #babylove #mommyhood #sleepshopconsulting #parentlife #momsofinstagram #sleepingbaby #mommylife #sleeptips #socalmoms #tiredmom #tiredmommy #momsunite #sleephelp #momlife #nymoms #nycmoms #lamoms

Hello Jane the Sleep Coach here! How are you? So here are three steps to help your baby to sleep through the night: 1- start a good, consistent bedtime routine- bath time (some nights!); into the room they will sleep in; last feed; story; turn the lights off; have a lovely final cuddle and into bed! 2- if your baby wakes during the night respond in the same way they went to bed initially….dont make a big deal…stay calm, committed and consistent with the actions you use. 3- if you want to feed your baby during the night- do it- but make it your decision…don’t use it purely as a way to get them back to sleep or you will have to feed them every time they wake up. Teaching your baby to self settle is the best way to get them to sleep through. This comes from how they settle at the beginning of the night! If you need some help or guidance with regards to sleep please send me a message. I am always happy to chat! #babysleep #sleepcoachingtips #toddlersleephelp #parentsneedsleep #babysleeptips #sleepcoach

Self care. So important, yet feels nearly impossible when you’re a parent. I constantly have to remind myself that self care looks different for everyone and it won’t always be a day at the spa or a night out. Sometimes it will be taking a moment to take five deep breaths. Or doing a quick stretch in the middle of the day. Or even just taking a minute to eat something! For me, one of the small self care things I do is while I’m out for a walk or a hike with my kiddos, I will put one headphone in and listen to music or a podcast. This way I’m still present with my kids but I’m also fitting in a bit of something that fills my cup. And that helps keep me sane until I’m able to actually get a day off 😅 What are some of your self care routines? Let me know in the comments!👇🏼

This change represents an important milestone, and another step towards becoming older and more independent. It can also come with some mixed emotions (excitement mixed with some fear and anxiety!) on the part of your kiddo, and some serious patience testing for you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So, when your child really is ready to transition out of a crib, try to make it as smooth as possible with these steps: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Make sure your little one is ready: For many parents, it can be tempting to move your child from a crib to a big bed as soon as they’ve turned two, but, as I’ve blogged about before, many children are not ready for the big kid bed until closer to 3-3.5 years of age. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Get your child involved in the switch: Ensure they’re involved in picking out the new bed and bedding, so that they pick a bed that makes him feel comfy and safe, and feels like they have some control over this very new situation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Keep your child’s room the same, if possible: Again, changing from a crib to a bed is already a big change, and many parents make the mistake of doing a total overhaul on the décor in their child’s room, or even switching to a new room altogether, while simultaneously making the switch to a big bed. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Allow a comfort object: Allow your child one comfort object in the new bed, so they feel safe and secure, but not a bunch of various items that will distract from sleep. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Keep your regular routines: Routine is more important than ever in order to help your little one feel safe and familiar in this new situation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Firmness and empathy: Be patient, but firm, so they understand that the rules about sleep have not changed just because the bed did! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ☁️ READ MORE at thehappysleepcompany.com #sleepcoach #babysleep #newbornsleep #babysleep #babyschedules #babysleeptips

Babies have unique sleep patterns that can differ greatly from those of adults. Unlike adults, infants sleep for shorter periods throughout the day and night. Here's a quick breakdown of what to expect with infant sleep: Sleep Cycles: Babies typically have shorter sleep cycles, around 40-60 minutes, and they often move through light and deep sleep more frequently. Frequent Wake-Ups: Infants may wake up several times during the night due to hunger, discomfort, or simply needing comfort from a caregiver. Sleep Duration: Newborns often sleep a total of 14-17 hours in a 24-hour period, but this can vary widely. Day and Night Confusion: It's common for infants to have their days and nights mixed up, often sleeping more during the day and being more awake at night. Remember, each baby is unique, and their sleep patterns can change over time. It's important to establish a safe sleep environment and be patient as your baby navigates their early sleep journey. If you have concerns about your baby's sleep habits, it's always a good idea to consult with a pediatrician or sleep specialist. #Parenting #BabySleep #NewbornSleep #SleepTips #OrangeCounty #NewbornPhotography #BabyPhotography #ocnewbornphotographer #babysleeptraining #newborntips #planningforbaby

💫Discover the Power of Association Fading! 💫 Tired of sleep struggles and ready for peaceful nights? Look no further than our trademarked technique known as Association Fading. This gentle approach to sleep training has helped countless families transform their child’s sleep habits and create a restful environment for everyone. Association Fading revolves around gradually reducing or eliminating sleep associations that your little one relies on to fall asleep. These associations can range from rocking and nursing to using a pacifier or being held. By gently fading these associations, we utilize a combination of voice, presence, touch/pat in a VERY specific order and guidelines that allows our children to develop the ability to self-soothe and fall asleep independently. It’s a beautiful process that nurtures their confidence and encourages healthy sleep habits. Unlike other sleep training methods, it doesn’t involve leaving your child in a room alone. Instead, it emphasizes gradual transitions and responsive parenting, allowing you to be present and comforting throughout the process. It’s about finding the right balance between support and encouraging independent sleep skills. AND first emphasizes aligning your child’s schedule to their natural sleep rhythms! In one of our blog articles, we delve deep into what Association Fading is, how it works, and why it’s a game-changer for developing independent sleep skills. We explore the step-by-step process, offer practical tips, and share success stories from families who have embraced this approach. You’ll gain valuable insights to help your child achieve restful nights of Sleep while nurturing a strong bond.
