Some things just take time. A couple of posts ago, I was taking a break from my studies to focus on mothering, and a little anxious about everything being put on hold. I was itching to keep progressing, itching to read and write again, but knew I had to be patient and enjoy the time with my new baby. Well, that post was 10 months ago and baby is turning 1 in a couple of weeks. I wrote that post amongst some of the longest, most tiring days and yet in hindsight, the past year has gone by in a flash. Time is funny like that. It’s so horrible to have an illness that makes your kids your trigger, when the foundation of your illness is a fear of anything happening to them.” After a blissful experience with her first son, it never occurred to Jess that a subsequent pregnancy and postpartum could be any different - until she found out she was pregnant with twins. From real and perceived health complications, Jess’s mental health rapidly declined with every intrusive thought and compulsion that took over her life. The increased caretaking demands of parenting multiples and a toddler only compounded the feeling that she wasn’t enough for her children. Despite being cared for by the local acute mental health team, Jess started to experience hallucinations and psychosis. When children are upset their behaviour can become intense. It is challenging to know what to say and how to respond when kids are angry and dysregulated. It is normal as a parent to take it personally and feel equally upset with your child. Our impulse may be to reprimand them, set a boundary and tell them how revolting what they are doing and saying is. But the reality is that whilst we see anger on the outside, on the inside is shame, hurt, disconnection, isolation and pain. We do not want to meet our child's pain with more pain by creating more disconnection and space in the relationship with them. We want to be the safe anchoring amidst the stormy emotional waters. I know many people may be reading this and thinking, "I cannot let my child get away with this sort of behaviour. I won't let them talk to me or anyone like this". The reality is that this way of thinking is old-fashioned. It breeds more shame and pain. There is never a time in anyone's childhood when they acted in the wrong way, and experiencing more pain, punishment and shame from a parent helped them feel better, learn the right skills to manage their anger and feel good about themselves. If we want to discipline our children, we must realise discipline is the art of learning through boundaries, love and connection. When we can see our children's true intentions and feelings, the hidden messages below the surface, we can be responsive parents rather than reactive. This way we can help our children learn the skills to regulate their emotions, de-shame their words and help bring them back after a big emotion so that we can help them feel connected too, and give them the right tools to manage in the future. Calming down the situation should be our focus when our kids are overwhelmed. It does not need to be complicated. Often the simplest things we do can make the biggest difference.

The big 6 week milestone! The time at which we are supposed to have found our groove. The time by which postpartum healing is supposed to be "done". We are supposed to be getting back to normal. HA! What a joke. Have I found my groove? No. Nora and I are doing great, but there's so a lot of learning I have to do about her (and that doesn't stop... ever). I have a bit of a groove with how to be Mummy to 4, but we are also at a time of big, constant change, so the groove looks very different every single day. Has postpartum healing finished? No. My body feels weak, and my mind is fast. On days when I go, go, go, I notice my body screaming to me. My brain is working overtime to comprehend the new "groove" we are in, and it's a lot of work. I have been disappointed in my strength and in my size, reminding myself of what I have done for the last 5 years and how strong I am, albeit not in a way I hope when I look in my wardrobe. Are we back to normal? Back? No. New normal? Yes. Everything about life right now is normal. I love it. It's tiring. It's chaos. It's hard. It's fun... but it's not "back" to how it was before. It's never going to be! That's the whole point. The 6 week milestone, to me, is the start. The start of the next groove-finding, normal-finding phase of life. 🍓Strawberry Yoghurt Bars - Perfect for school lunches! ✳️SAVE recipe by clicking tab bottom right of image ✅ Ingredients 1 cup plain flour ½ cup wholemeal plain flour 1 teaspoon bicarbonate soda ½ teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 cup Greek yoghurt 2 eggs ¼ cup vegetable oil ½ cup caster sugar 250g fresh Beerenberg strawberries, diced Method Preheat the oven to 180°C, and line a 20x30cm brownie pan with non-stick paper. In a large bowl mix the flours, bicarbonate soda, baking powder and cinnamon. In a medium bowl mix the yoghurt, eggs, oil and caster sugar. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, and mix to combine. Add the Beerenberg strawberries and fold through. Pour into the prepared tin, and spread to smooth the top. Cook for 25-30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pan and cut into 16 bars.
