“Go by sound, not feel.” “Go by sound, not feel.” “Go by sound, not feel.” I probably heard that 3 million times over the course of my undergrad. See, I had a fixation on trying to make everything with my embouchure feel ‘right’ when I played the bass trombone. In fact, I was practically more concerned about how it felt to play the instrument rather than how I actually sounded. I used to struggle specifically with how it felt in the middle of my register (it was right around middle f#-g). Pretty sure I wasn’t the only one with a break there. Anyhow, it drove me CRAZY. It felt weird and uncomfortable, and I was obsessed over it. I spent countless hours trying to ‘fix’ it In hindsight, it was an impressive waste of time and energy and I suspect that I would have been a much better trombonist if I spent my energy elsewhere. Of course, my 1:1 music teacher at the time knew that, and he tried to tell me… Every. Week. “Go by sound, NOT feel.” I have him saying that ingrained in the deepest reaches of my mind now lol. Alas, I was stubborn as heck, and his advice just didn’t sink in. I kept obsessing over the darn embouchure break. Here’s the irony: When I look back and listen to past recordings of myself, I sounded great… …even as I played across my break. In fact, no one listening would have ever known that I even felt ‘weirdness’ in that register of my playing at all. It sounded fine. “Go by sound, not feel.” I finally understood the advice, but not until after I had transitioned from music into fitness. (Better late than never!) Here’s the lesson behind it all: 👉 Focus on producing the desired result. Expecting to find a way to make the journey completely smooth and comfortable is futile. Be okay with experiencing discomfort along the way. #itstime

I’ve been into fitness for a long time. Since I was 12 years old. I got into it because I wanted to build muscle to feel less insecure about my body… …and I wanted a great physique to set myself apart from the crowd a bit and feel more confident. Honestly, it didn’t take long for me to get hooked to working out. Couple reasons for that: 1️⃣ I like the feeling of improving. The purpose of working out (for me) was to always build more muscle and get stronger. I love the feeling of making more progress in the gym to take steps in that direction, and then get to slowly see the progress come to fruition in the mirror. One of the best feelings in the world is getting to see and experience your hard work paying off, isn’t it?? (This is also one of the main reasons I pursued bass trombone for so long. I loved working to get progressively better and more skilled at it.) 2️⃣ The act of working out is satisfying for me. Satisfaction is the feeling of content that comes after overcoming a challenge. In a nutshell, that sums up working out pretty well. Every set is a challenge, which means that each time I make it to the finish line, I get a bit of satisfaction. Honestly, I think there’s a bit of an addictive quality to that. I love it. (This is ALSO one of the reasons why I pursued bass trombone performance. Practicing and getting better at my technique and different rep. left me with a similar feeling) 3️⃣ Working out is something positive that I’ve always had to look forward to. No matter how my day has been going… No matter how I’m feeling about work, or, in the past, my bass trombone playing… I always had my fitness to fall on as a place of comfort. It was always something that gave me somewhere positive to put my energy, clear my mind, alleviate stress, and feel a sense of comfort from. Do YOU like working out for any of the same reasons? 1️⃣ It taught me the importance of paying attention to the details To play the bass trombone well, I needed to have a solid grasp of the fundamentals, like… Intonation, clean articulation, tone quality, bowing, breathing, scales/arpeggios/interval patterns, etc. Each piece of music is intended to paint a different story or emit a certain set of emotions. Putting that all together takes a tremendous amount of attention to detail. The details matter within fitness too… How to train with good technique, developing body awareness, understanding training programming, and… ...Understanding food selection, calories, protein, satiety signalling, etc. Learning how to pay attention to the details with music helped do the same thing with fitness. 2️⃣ It taught me HOW to learn As a musician, you are CONSTANTLY learning. You’re learning how to improve upon your technique… You’re learning how new pieces of music… You’re learning how to fit in with different ensembles or sections… You’re learning how to take direction from different mentors, section leaders, conductors, etc. The constant demand for ongoing learning taught me how to learn efficiently and to always remain open to learning more. This helped me tremendously in fitness. Examples: learning ways to improve the intricacies of technique, programming, or how to THINK about training + nutrition, etc. 3️⃣ It taught me that I CAN face my fears As a musician, I performed a LOT. Ironically, as a new post-secondary music student, and for much of my undergrad and ADP, I was petrified of performing. Despite being scared of it, I was made to perform regularly. The regular performances hardened me against my fear of it, and showed me that the more I faced it, the more potential I had to grow. That’s the same with fitness. To improve your body and health usually takes going outside of one’s comfort zone, which can be scary. But what I learned is that if you do it, just like within music, you will unlock your potential for ongoing growth. Has your music background helped you in fitness too? Fixed up a tone on my MOOER GE300. It’s a ‘Worship’ tone that you get to hear in most Gospel songs theee days. Saturated reverbs n tailed delays. In Japan, there are villages with different focuses, ranging from nutrition, to the environment, to visual arts, to music. These folks visited us at the NOMC, with the help of their patient and kind translator, Yumi, to do research on a new village focused on how to incorporate music into the culture to increase happiness and joy in society. Discussions of the magical culture of New Orleans, and how to attempt to recreate something that cannot be exactly recreated, took place. We spoke about our unique culture, the way people interact, what we value, and our preserving culture. It was a testament of how to engage both local and international partners for influence and impact. We are honored that these visitors from Japan reached out to us and hope to stay in touch and learn how their music village evolves. Music has a way of connecting people, regardless of language or location. The differences in which it does so matters, and should be celebrated. Throughout the visit, we found ourselves questioning: how can we make music more accessible and integrated into everyday life for everyone in our community.
