My pastel piece for @artbysabra Foundations course.... My pastels arrived and I finally got round to finishing my pastel project. This took me ages...I really struggled with this and there were definitely ugly stages along the way but I'm really pleased with the end result. I would have liked to have been a bit looser but in the end the paper was saturated with pigment and I couldn't push him any further. I love the bits where the pastel is really rough and grainy! As most of you will know, I love painting faces and for some reason I mostly paint female faces. I'm looking for beauty....not the obvious skin deep beauty, but the beauty that comes from within.. the connection between us, the emotion and sometimes vulnerability that binds us together. It's been a very long time since I last posted. In the past few months life has been very much a Rollercoaster ride. We all have times where we have to face pain and loss and 3 months ago, my Mum passed away. I knew it was coming but it didn't make it any easier. To those of you reading this that have lost their mum, you will understand the pain and the gaping hole her death has left in my heart. No matter where you are in the world you always expect your mum to be there, at the end of the phone, to call anytime and share your ups and downs. The knowledge that she is no longer anywhere on this planet breaks my heart. After returning for her funeral in the UK, I also lost my 12 year old labradoodle and then had a bad bout of covid for the second time. I found no desire to paint at first and when I did, I had the pull to paint flowers. They're joyful and comforting in a way I feel I need right now. I'm enjoying the colours and using an unfamiliar palette and subject matter. I'm sure I'll return to my love of portraits at some point but for now I'm taking comfort from painting beautiful, expressive florals! I know I'm not the only one navigating the ups and downs that life throws at us. We all have times to dig deep and find our resilience. In those times I'm lucky enough to have my art to fall back on....to soothe me. Like a lot of others across the world, covid 19 has eventually reached me and my family here in rural NZ over the last few weeks. Whilst I'm sure we had a mild version of the virus, it was still enough to drain most of my energy and leave me feeling lethargic and unmotivated. There are a lot of things to be grateful for at the moment but one of those things for me is @karabullockart and her #letsfaceit2022 class. I was unable to leave the house and didnt quite know what to do with myself, so i lost myself in @emma_petitt_art fun lesson.
