SPITZKOPPE || Guide ✍️🌵✨ Spitzkoppe is a national park, 2 hours drive north of Swakopmund in Northern Namibia 🇳🇦 ✨ The National Park is home to some of the most unique rock formations and is known as the Matterhorn of Namibia ✨ There is a significant cultural importance to the San People of Spitzkoppe and whilst visiting you’re able to view the bushmen paintings ✨ The entire site is a giant campsite. If you have camping equipment we highly recommend camping in the park. You get a huge private spot each with BBQ, Toilet and Fire area ✨ There is an onsite restaurant for those who need as well as supplies for camping - including firewood ✨ There are difficult hikes for experienced individuals. For beginners there are plenty of areas to climb including the famous archway ✨ Spitzkoppe is a stargazing haven. The stars we saw the night we stayed were the second best we’ve ever seen. 📸 Snapshots from Namibia 🇳🇦 1: Pink Lake in Walvis Bay. The pink colour of the lake is caused by the presence of algae in the water. Walvis Bay's vast salt deposits produce 90% of salt produced in sub-saharan Africa. As a result of large-scale salt production and processing in Walvis Bay, Pink Lake was born. 💗 2: Astrophotography in Sossusvlei. The desert sky, no matter where, is always ideal for stargazing. Sossusvlei was next-level due to the petrified trees and endless sands. 🌟 3: Sandwich Harbor. South of Walvis Bay in Dorob National Park is one of the most dramatic sights in Namibia (in my opinion!) Huge dunes rise up and plunge right into the ocean - similar to Qatar for my GCC besties. ♡ It was such a stunning sight. 🌊 4: Deadvlei. A.k.a., my reason for visiting Namibia. You know me by now - deserts are the key to my heart and the Namib Desert did not disappoint! The orange dunes were perfection. Just check my last few posts for more Deadvlei love. 🏜 5: Etosha National Park. I made a whole reel about the animals here, so definitely check that out for more info. But suffice it to say, the wildlife here was magical. I got to see leopards, zebras, giraffes, elephants, lions, wildebeest, oryx, and more. 🐆 6. Spitzkoppe. This beautiful park is full of gargantuan rock formations in the middle of a long empty desert. The bald granite peaks almost seem out of place, especially the famous rock arch. Spitzkoppe is equally spectacular and unusual! 🌾 Namibia was one of my "2020 Re-do's" (aka trips that got canceled due to you-know-what) so I was ecstatic to finally make it there! Actually this trip came at a tough time for me, due to some unexpected health and business conundrums. Travel has a way of putting things into perspective, and helping us remember how beautiful the world is.... even during tough times. I'm thankful that I got to go. This is definitely a hidden gem in Namibia! When you enter Sossusvlei Park and buy your pass / ticket for Deadvlei, the pass also includes Sesriem Canyon. Sesriem Canyon in about 2km from the main gate. The parking area is about 50m from the cliffs. If you want to explore the bottom of Sesriem Canyon, turn right as you look down into the canyon, and you will find a small unmarked path leading you down to the bottom. The formation of this canyon is absolutely magnificent! It's scorching hot on top, but down under in the canyon, lovely cool. Go and explore these hidden gems in Namibia 🇳🇦 You will NOT regret it! The African Tribe reinterpreting Victorian Era garments from the 1900s🪡 Meet the Herero, a people who live mostly in Namibia, Africa But why would an African tribe wear traditionally Western clothes? If you have some sense of African history, the answer may not come as a great surprise: in short, it has to do with a painful colonial experience: During the 20th century, Namibia used to be a German colony. Around the year 1900, a severe conflict broke out between the Germans and the Herero. Women took up foreign dresses, modifying them to appear somewhat like the cattle (an important part of Herero society). The men claimed the military uniform of the dead bodies of German soldiers. Today, the military dress is a tribute to these struggles.
