Meet the Table Mountain Ghost Frog (Heleophryne rosei). I was not prepared for how truly alien these frogs are. Unlike other Ghost Frogs, these guys have a strange thumb-like projection on each forelimb, sport a more mottled pattern, and hypnotise with golden galaxies in their eyes. There is some evidence to suggest that these frogs should be placed in their own genus, distinct from Heleophryne. Unfortunately, the Table Mountain Ghost Frog is listed as Critically Endangered. They occur exclusively in a handful of ravines on a small section of Table Mountain, where their tadpoles have a prolonged development period in the cold, fast-flowing streams. These tadpoles may take over a year to develop into fully formed little frogs, whereafter they take up residence in damp microhabitats around the streams, such as mossy rock cracks and even hollow trees. Choking of these fragile stream habitats by damming and invasive plants has driven this range-restricted species to the brink of extinction. Clumsy hikers may also have a negative impact by disturbing rocks and sediment when crossing the streams. Fortunately, conservation efforts to protect this emblematic species have been well supported, including population monitoring and habitat restoration.

Miss Lark is my goat 😝 Short hike to Table Mountain in ANF. The restaurant was closed. Lark & myself were the only ones in trail. Snake season so be mindful on trail it can get hot. We did it after another hike was later in the day. At the summit, there is The NASA Jet propulsion Lab. and there is an observatory there, no public access. The summit has now an elevated cement marker, which Lark hopped on. She is my goat! She is my amazing friend. If I stop to take photos or videos, she stops too, seems that she checks out the view looking down into ravines, canyons or steep drops. Or… she scouts the horizon, keeping us safe. Had a very pleasant guiding job today with 4 Indians (a family, 3 generations) walking a circuit across the Table top of #TableMountain from the upper cable station to Maclear's Beacon and back. The granny (aged 75, with a gammy knee) managed fine, as did the others, and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thank goodness we didn't attempt the Platteklip Gorge trail up, which is what they had originally signed up for!
