South End is excited to welcome Rev. Kyle Frohock to the pulpit this Sunday (tomorrow!) in worship! A native of middle Tennessee, Rev. Kyle D. Frohock is a passionate follower of Jesus Christ and advocate for God’s transforming mission in the world. He is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church (TWK Conference) and has served in numerous ministry contexts throughout his twenty years of ministry: serving local churches, missional ministries (sports ministry, urban youth ministry, affordable housing, and multicultural ministry), and as a missionary in Latin America. He is also a PhD student in Intercultural Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary where his research focuses on mission studies, intercultural theology, Christian community development, and missional ecclesiology. Kyle serves as the Director of Development and Intercultural Engagement for The Wesley Heritage Foundation (@wesleyheritagefoundation), whose aim is to serve churches and their leaders across the Spanish-speaking world by developing Wesleyan tools and resources, training pastors and leaders, cultivating a network of Spanish-first Wesleyan scholars, and uniting English- and Spanish-language Wesleyans in connectional relationships. Kyle is the husband of his best friend and loving companion, Tess Frohock, and father to their wonderful daughters—Charis, Kaya, Selah, and Justice. This 8-week, church-wide challenge is designed to help us in the South End community cultivate meaningful relationships with our geographic neighbors. Can you name your 8 closest neighbors? What about your regular grocery store clerk? Your mailperson? You might be surprised that very few Americans can. A recent survey discovered that 66% of Americans report having no meaningful relationships with anyone in their own neighborhood. This week: Pray. Pray for God to open your eyes to see the neighbors God wants you to see. End your prayer time by reading Matthew 7:7-12. Then identify the immediate neighbors you wish to focus on for the next 8 weeks, and pray for the people of that area. This Sunday, May 28th, we will celebrate Pentecost together in worship at 10:30. What is #pentecost? This is the day we commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples of Jesus after his ascension (Acts 2:1-21). The word "pentecost" comes from the Greek word meaning "fiftieth," because the Jewish festival of Shavuot occurs 50 days after Passover, symbolizing the day God gave Moses the Torah on Mt. Sinai. In the Christian faith, Pentecost falls 50 days after the Resurrection of Christ. Open Door Collective is a contemplative faith formation start-up here in middle Tennessee. We focus on making contemplative practices accessible to modern spiritual seekers, in the hopes that more people slowing down and listening will lead to more people hearing and heeding the call to cultivate communities of peace and justice. We were looking for a neighborhood church and were impressed with how loving and supportive South End was. Rob is the director for the church’s preschool program and has served on the Trustee Committee for several years. Jenny participates in the handbell choir, and all four of us have been active in the Room in the Inn program to help our neighbors that are unhoused. We are rooted at South End because of the people. South End is one of the few places in our lives where people with different backgrounds and different political beliefs are accepting of each other and interested in serving together, regardless of our differences. Meet the Slowey family! They are #rootedatsouthend. Rev. Shelby joined us as pastor of South End in July of last year, bringing her husband Stephan and their 3 kiddos, Scarlett, Phinn, and Sophie. They enjoy hosting get-togethers in their home, hiking and playing around Nashville, and getting out on the lake on their boat in the summertime! Shelby says, "It is such a joy and privilege to be #rooted here at South End. The people here are so welcoming and authentic. It sounds cliche, but they really do feel like our family. Being able to raise our kids here, letting them see and participate in worship among people who value the presence of children just as they are, wiggles and all, is such a gift. Meet John and Angie! They are #rootedatsouthend. They've been active members of South End since 2006. Here's their story: "We were brought to South End by way of the Boys Scouts. After visiting a few times, we decided that the South End community could be a great fit for our family. The people at South End we so welcoming. I (John) sing and play in the South End String Band, I'm the current Scout Charter Rep and as a trained Lay Speaker, and I occasionally preach. I (Angie) am the Scout Committee Chairperson. In the past I have volunteered with Room In The Inn, helped with Habitat Builds, and served as the youth Sunday school teacher. South End is a place where we feel that we can see and feel God's spirit working in our lives and in the community. Even though I had periods of being gone over the years, I always returned home to South End. South End offers so many opportunities to serve the Lord. I am active in our women’s group and adult Sunday School class. I also volunteer when possible in our various ministries such as Room in the Inn and summer food program. I am rooted at South End because it is my home and the people are my family. The fellowship and love found at this special place on the hill is special indeed. Q:What brought you to South End? A: Before Lynda and I got married we were looking for a church in the neighborhood. We liked South End right away. It feels like a family, and everyone matters. During prayers and concerns people just raise their hands and express their prayer needs. We went to other churches for a while, and when we came back to South End it felt like a family reunion. Q: In what ways do you serve or volunteer at South End? A: There are plenty of opportunities for service. Whatever you do well or enjoy, there is almost certainly a need you can help fill. I love music, and when I joined the choir, I really connected and became rooted at South End. Over the years our music ministry has grown. Now we have a string band and play frequently at South End, as well as retirement centers, nursing homes, and even other churches in the area. Q: Why are you rooted at South End? A: South End is my second family. Bagpipes at South End tomorrow! Stewart MacPherson, brother to South End choir member Cherry MacPherson, will be piping up on the hill tomorrow morning for worship at 10:30! MacPherson served for 20 years in the Winnipeg police force, including time spent as Pipe Major. He went on to become Chief of Police at Victoria Beach, Manitoba, serving for 15 years before retiring. He has piped in international competitions and festivals, and been featured on many recordings. He has often piped in the Governor General of Canada for state ceremonies, and was awarded the Queen's Jubilee medal. He's even played on stage with Rod Stewart and Sir Paul McCartney!
