She was was elevated to doctor of the church in 1970 by Pope Paul VI, the first woman to be so honoured! St Teresa was also a close associate of St John of The Cross, the Spanish poet and mystic, who authored, amongst other work, the spiritual classic "Dark Night of The Soul" (it's much more uplifting than it sounds). This too has become a timeless classic in Christian Mysticism. St. Teresa and St John of The Cross both worked as teachers for the upliftment of all souls and a simpler life, in times of great change and conflict. My first @shafakelif read, The Forty Rules of Love (and I'm sure not the last). To say it simply, I'm drunk with joy & soulfulness. When I closed the book after a heartwarming journey alongside Shams Tabrizi, Rumi, Aziz & Ella my soul was equal parts happy & sad and brimming with Love. An all-encompassing Love. A Love for everything inside and outside. How can one not be like that after reading such a beautiful, eye-opening tale, I simply cannot fathom. The story takes us on a journey where along with the characters the reader also finds oneself face-to-face with some life-changing experience. Different for each reader, am sure, but all laced with the colours of love & feeling of oneness with self. In addition to the four main characters the other beautiful souls like the leper, Sulaiman the drunk, Kimya, Kerra, sons of Rumi, children of Ella, David & even the ‘’villainous“ characters give us a lot to reflect upon. At some point or other, it is sure to feel like there's a bit of them in each of us. The thought/realization that every living being is the same on a mystic level. The sad thing is not everyone will be able to see to that level, but one can try, one must try. Now regarding the 40 rules itself; I cannot find any reason for a single one of these rules to be irrelevant at any point in time. Superficially, the rules may look religious a bit, but no. Dive deeper into each one and you'll be amazed. Not going to elaborate much on this because this is something a reader must experience on one's own. The only bit that left a minute sense of incompleteness was the viewpoint of the Killer. I wanted some more from his side, but that's ok too. Maybe that's been left out for the reader to fill. It is not easy to write a review for a book with such deep meaning and undercurrents. One can just put one's observations out there & that's exactly what this is. An ode to roses: I have always been powerfully drawn to roses. When I was young, my grandmother had many roses in her garden and she put a great deal of love and attention into keeping them healthy and beautiful. I spent a lot of my early life there at her house, and the colors and fragrances of the roses were always a delight and a wonder for me. One of my all-time favorite poets, Rainer Maria Rilke, whose work profoundly shaped me early on as a writer (and as a person), was also enamored of roses. He wrote his own epitaph, almost koan-like, which reads: ‘Rose, O pure contradiction, joy [or, desire] / of being no one’s sleep beneath / so many lids.’ I have often repeated this to myself over the years, as a kind of meditation. Roses also signify the Holy Mother, María, a tradition adopted by early Christians from one of their elder sibling religions, Isiacism, wherein roses were long associated with the Hellenized Egyptian goddess Isis (Aset). In Apuleius’s ancient novel, ‘Metamorphoses’, it is eating a rose that finally frees Lucius from his benighted and disgraced state as a donkey, and returns him to his full humanity, specifically because of the rose’s sacred association with Isis. Lucius then becomes an initiate and a priest of the Isiac Mysteries. In Renaissance alchemical philosophy and European esotericism, the rose was often used to symbolize the Great Work: the unfoldment of a totalizing transformation of the human person into a divinized form. This was also called the summum bonum, the ‘highest good’. All of this, I think, conveys pretty well why I named our religious order, ‘The Communion of the Mystic Rose’. It's the first day of the week of Gevurah, never an easy week, in this a very uneasy time. But it is Chesed in Gevurah, which can be seen, in the combination of these cards as illustrating the concept of “Principled struggle” is known in the Jewish tradition as מחלקת לשם שמים, makhloket l’shem shamayim, “a debate/dispute for the sake of heaven.” In such a dispute, all sides see each other as holy, and as seeking the holy, the light, in the dispute. This is the Chesed in Gevurah. And in the Chesed card today, the card with our Squire meditating on his fears, you may notice a detail in the stained glass window: the Latin word Pax, or Peace, is there, though harder to see in some decks because of the choice of colors in the window. Today someone I know called to say he was considering ending our connection because he thinks there is too great a divide in our politics in this fraught moment. Since he hadn't really had a discussion with me about just what my politics and feelings are, I suggested he actually inquire into what I believe and have the difficult discussion. And having that discussion, if he still felt the need to say goodbye, I would understand. But without this discussion, he would miss an opportunity for a discussion starting from a point where both sides, knowing each other's commitment to justice, could really listen to each other. We still may disagree, and he may still feel the need to go. But for me, it's essential to see the humanity of the other side. And to hope there is at core, a dispute that is for the sake of heaven, so that we make bring heaven down to earth. I can't pretend I always feel that way. It's easy to demonize and other others. But this work demands more from me. And all of us. 🐺Your "brooding spot" is a place you return to regularly, so that over time - you know it, and it also knows you. It can be close, local. Somewhere to notice the small and grand shifts of season, weather, occupants. 🐾 I see this as different to meditation for instance, although brooding has a contemplative quality. 🦴 it's more akin to a) a mystical experience that reminds us of our place in the world and puts us in relationship to land, "country", and ancestry, and 🌀 b) an accessible place of "vigil" for the majority of us urbanites who can't get to a regular "wilderness vigil" - [as a time/place to mark transitions, ask big questions, grieve]. A days-long wilderness vigil is something I'm holding as intention - but for the moment, I'll be commiting to a regular brood on each new moon (at least) - rain, hail, shine, summer, winter, day or night. 🗝️If you have a brooding spot, when would you brood? 🗝️If you don't, where might your spot be? Our Gnostic Mass High Altar at Star of Babalon. I got this photo last Sunday after our celebration of the Gnostic Mass. Coming together in a community where I feel seen, understood, and loved to celebrate a beautiful, spiritually significant ritual is what it is all about. There seems to be such a huge disconnect between how ceremonial magick is online vs in person. It's not uncommon for first time participants to be shocked by how sweet, welcoming, and serious we are about our work and eachother. How wonderful the ceremonial magick community is in person feels like some kind of best kept secret. Though there are times I wish it wasn't such a secret especially when it comes to women who face so many unfortunate barriers to entry already. Even when it comes to me, I put so much more effort into my in person community and taking care of my people than I do with anything online. It's the people who are the heart and soul of it all. The Fool is numbered zero, a fact worthy of our attention, for the number under which a card was “born” sheds light on its character and destiny. The concept of zero, unknown in the ancient world, did not appear in Europe until the twelfth century. The discovery of this apparent “nothing” enlarged man’s thinking in important ways. Practically, it created the decimal system, and philosophically it concretized the astounding paradox that “nothing” is really something, and that this nothing occupies space and contains power. The Fool, true to form, had no value of itself, but augmented that of any card with which it was combined. Like the empty, worthless zero, The Fool’s magic can turn one into 🪄♾️ 🌠.
