S C H O O L D A Y S Over the last couple of years, as we’ve stripped more and more of what many would consider formal education, we’ve more and more enjoyed what our “school” days look like. There was so much striving before, so much overwhelm all around…oh, how I misunderstood learning! So as I’ve read books, connected with like minded homeschoolers, and untangled my “whys” for homeschooling our children, I am beginning to see fruit I hadn’t seen before - a love of learning. And isn’t this the goal with education? That whatever our children want to do in life, whether accounting or cosmetology or dog training or neurology, that they would find enjoyment in the journey? I’ve learned that it would be impossible to teach them every single thing they’ll need to know, and, that I might have been teaching them some rather unnecessary things in the process. Book work is not bad, it’s just not the crux of what we do anymore, and we are starting to flourish this way. Sometimes you just gotta go tummy down and watch some ants. This is what science looks like in toddlerhood. He doesn't need me to comment in this moment; he doesn't need me to explain that ants have an exoskeleton and a hive mind, or that they live in the ground, or to sing the ants go marching. He needs me to be near and to watch with him quietly, and be there to receive excited comments and babbles and only then converse. Doing anything else would break his concentration, teaching him only that focus isn't meant to last long. It would be an interruption, not a welcome addition. Since we have been so into A Wrinkle in Time, we decided to do an Astronomy unit study this month ✨ We haven’t been loving the science curriculum we started this year, but we really love these Harbor & Sprout Unit Studies. So I figured we could do a couple this summer before we try something new to start first grade! This notion damages their ability to THINK, ACT, and practice using their own 🧠 as the teen years turn into adult years and they actually DO have to own 100% of their life (mental health, physical health, emotional health, intellectual health PLUS skills to create a plan for their future) How do you help your teen prepare for adulthood through skills of resiliency? #resilient

Is there a better way to spend childhood than being home educated? I really don’t think so… . Here is my thoughts: . Home education gives children the best chance at being their individual selves & embracing all that they are (as I wrote about in my last post), it holds space for individuality which I believe is so important in childhood for future mental wellbeing. . Home education strengthens relationships in the family home, usually puts connections above everything. . Home education allows time for so much more living! . Home education is flexible to suit children’s priorities and interests and abilities/needs. . Home education sees the value in childhood and doesn’t rush children being children. . Home education can be anything you want and need it to be. . Home education can bring authentic true friendships where children don’t feel the need to change or shrink themselves. . Home education can be the catalyst of cycle breaking and bring change to a whole new generation of children. . Our trip to #standrews was really triggered by wanting to visit @museumsunista and see their current exhibition, #iranwondersofnature We've watched (and rewatched) the excellent series on #persian art and culture presented by #samiraahmed Seeing these artifact in person was quite awe inspiring. The silver plate with a figure of #anahita is beautiful, the #bactrianwarrior (fondly called scarface) has a commanding presence as he gazes out of his case. There were marvelous books, a #quran and a copy of the #shahnameh, the Persian book of kings and mythology. Where #rostam (imbued with #farr) defeats all enemies. I think the piece that made the biggest impression was by a modern artist, @parastou_forouhar, #thetimeofbutterflies is viewed from a distance and appears ethereal, beautiful. But close up the images reveal themselves. How is hiking time, a learning time? 1. Children have the freedom to explore and identify what they are curious about. This is child led learning. When learning is self motivated, it is far more effective than cracking a book. Happy learning experiences build a life long love for learning. My boys ask for pictures of what they are curious of, and we use Google Lens to read up on what we saw. 2. Over time, I hope my boys will learn to recognize that spending active time in nature is a natural way to care for their health. My hope is that in their adulthood they will seek out time in nature, independently. While we are adventuring I draw their attention to recognize the way they feel indoors vs outdoors. 3. This is a free sensory experience. Without the purchase of any sensory aids my boys engage each of their sensations when in nature. A system that was designed to label a child as “ahead” or “behind” is not a system that was designed with the best interest and knowledge of children in mind. Our children are all unique individuals with curious, imaginative, creative minds. Each one fully capable of learning exactly what they need when they need it. Any parent with multiple children will tell you that no two children are the same. So how could we ever expect to create an effective system that treats every child as if they were exactly that? It’s impossible. When we take away the individuality of our children, we essentially take away their humanity. Along with it, we take their drive and passion for learning that they are born with, which is the biggest travesty of all. Parents, no matter what anyone says, do not ever believe the lie that your child should be somewhere or someone other than exactly who they are right in this moment. Do not waste thoughts about where your child “should” be - and focus instead on the unique beauty of where they ARE. If you’re feeling that pressure right now, pause all other thoughts and just watch your child for a day or two. Pay attention to their unique talents, the special ways they communicate with you and others, the amazing things they are so very capable of doing already. I promise you will feel comfort and relief in seeing the truly incredible human that stands in front of you. 💚
