The project tells about the different ways of Resistance of the indigenous people in the Ecuadorian Amazon who are threatened by the ongoing concessions for foreign companies for extraction activities. The extractive activities would not only destroy the jungle, they would also deprive the natives of their lands as well as their identities and traditions. The Shuar and Achuar territories are rich in copper and gold; more in the north, in the province of Pastaza y Orellana where Sáparas and Kichwas live, the threat comes from the extraction of oil. #cofan #cofans #kofan #ecuador🇪🇨 #amazonia #resistenciaamazonica #piatsawproject #losancianossinedad #nicolaokinphotography

#assignment para @bistandsaktuelt magazine de noruega con @lisehermann A small indigenous community, the Cofán People of Sinangoe, has just won a lawsuit against the government, which annuls more than 50 mining concessions threatening their territory. This is an important example of indigenous resistance against extractivism in the Amazon. It is also important because it creates precedents for indigenous rights in Ecuador and other countries. The area is home to over 3,725 species of plants, 650 species of birds and 50 species of mammals, including various endemic and endangered species like the spectacled bear and the mountain tapir. The areas fragility means even small-scale deforestation could have disastrous impacts on the local flora and fauna. This victory protects one of the biggest rivers in Ecuador from serious contamination by heavy metals used in gold extraction. #cofan #cofán #amazon #amazonia #ecuador #piatsawproject #resistenciaamazonica #everydayecuador #everidaylatinamerica #nicolaokinphotography #spicollective sinangoe #goldmanprize #goldmanprize2022

#amazon #amazonia #ecuador🇪🇨 #piatsawproject #nicolaokinphotography

José Miguel Santi, communications scholar from the Sarayaku Community. Sarayaku is known worldwide for its history of combat and resistance against oil extraction. After 25 years of resistance, this community has achieved to prevent oil extraction in their 135,000 hectares ancestors land, and, in 2012 they won a victory for the indigenous rights when the Inter-american Court of Human Rights pronounced its verdict against Ecuadorian Government. Sarayaku is called, according to an old prophecy of the Shamans ancestors "The Midday People" for being a pillar of territorial, cultural and spiritual defence, a beacon so strong as midday sun, and the last Originary People to fall facing extraction menace.
