There is enough research outlining the benefits of developmental and neuroprotective care that it is no longer ethical to actively avoid or protest its place in the NICU setting (doesn’t mean it’s easy to implement though 🫶🏼). 👉🏼Some evidence-based, NICU developmental care experiences with positive benefits include: ✅ Immediate, early, and frequent skin-to-skin contact with mom ✅ Positioning for flexion, midline and comfort ✅ Non pharmacological pain relief ✅ Cycled lighting ✅ Swaddled bathing > traditional bathing Ethical care in the medical setting means providing effective treatments that support a positive outcome. This doesn’t mean it’s easy to do. It also doesn’t mean you have to be perfect with every interaction🤍. You don’t have to abandon individualized care or override safety concerns in outlying circumstances. But you do need to be intentional👏🏼. 🌸👶🏾 Did you know preemies have “ministones” they should be meeting while they grow and get older in the NICU? From learning to tuck their arms and legs into their belly to snuggling safely into their mom…there’s a wide range of motor, sensory and social emotional needs they’re progressing through. Sometimes they’re achieved before discharge, but oftentimes it’s something families will see develop at home🤍. ✅ The important thing is, we don’t have to wait until we see a delay in one of these skills to step in. We also don’t wait for discharge to address the developmental needs of premature babies🥰. It’s actually our job to be proactive and PREVENT any negative developmental consequences of prematurity and spending early life in the NICU‼️. Not all signs of instability are related to cardiopulmonary concerns. A lot of times, babies drop their heart rate ("brady") or oxygen rate ("desat") as a response to feeling stressed or overstimulated. By being proactive about the WAY we do care, you can actually decrease those stress-related events (one reason it's a good idea to pour into your developmental skill-set!😉). Thank you all who have been following along. 🤍 Depending on the patient's condition, there are different types of feeding tubes that will deliver food and nutrition that one may not be able to fully receive from regular feedings/meals. 💡 #FeedingTube Enlightenment Fact: Feeding tubes can be placed through the nose, mouth, or abdomen. Types of feeding tubes: NG-tube: nasogastric tube - goes through the nose, down the esophagus, and into stomach. NJ-tube: nasogegunal tube - goes into the nose down to the jejunum (2nd part of small intestine) OG-tube: orogastric tube - goes into the mouth, down the esophagus, and into the stomach. G-tube: Gastronomy tube (aka PEG) - goes directly into stomach from the abdomen. J-tube: Jejunostomy tube - goes directly into the intestine from the abdomen. GJ-tube: Gastrostomy Jejunostomy tube - goes directly into both the stomach and intestine. #iloveatubie

Sick or premature babies may not be able to do this for various medical reasons, so the feeding tube will allow the baby to receive adequate nutrition. 💡 #FeedingTube Enlightenment Fact: Breastmilk, formula, or blended foods can be delivered through the tube. 🙌🏻 Therefore, new mothers in the NICU are encouraged to pump and collect breastmilk for their babies as these liquid gold are filled with antibodies to support baby’s health.

Some might only have a feeding tube for venting or medication purposes rather than feeding. A referral to specialists such as a speech-language pathologists may be made to evaluate swallowing ability to determine safest food textures for oral intake and decrease the risk of aspiration (foods/liquids entering the lungs). Support those and their families with a feeding tube. The medical device provides a chance to get better and healthier but it is not always an easy road. Be compassionate and support their fight.

About half a million children and adults rely on feeding tubes in the US alone. Feeding tubes make it possible for those unable to eat or drink enough on their own to get the nutrition and hydration that they need. This week, we'll be sharing some information on how feeding tubes support our infants and shed some light on the benefits of feeding tubes as a lifesaving medical intervention. I'd like to challenge you to dive in deeper into understanding all the medical reasons that children and adults are tube fed, and the challenges that tube feeding families face. Let’s talk about the Dr. Brown’s Specialty Feeding System! 🍼 The specialty feeder valve (as Dr. Brown’s calls it, the Infant-Paced feeding valve) turns a regular nipple into a compression nipple. 🍼 This one way valve is inserted into the nipple to assist the infant with infant-directed oral feedings. 🍼 The specialty feeder system is helpful in assisting with the management and treatment of complicated oral feeding issues, like cleft lip/palate or other craniofacial anomalies. 🍼 This system/valve is compatible with Dr. Brown’s nipples. Today was a good day :) About 3 weeks ago, I had a REALLY rough week. It was so taxing and draining and I felt so discouraged. 💙In July, TexScope turned 4! 🎉🎉🎉 💙I’ve navigated so much with this business. Just as I was growing, the COVID 19 pandemic made its way to the US. I could have easily given up back then, but I didn’t. 💙I saw the need for my services more than ever before. 💙I have very vivid memories of going into some of my hospitals, where there were 8-10 people intubated in a room. Once they were extubated and stable, per the physician guidance, I made my way into the room. Covered in protective gear from head to toe, I did my job. 💙I know, just like so many of you, that we really put our health on the line to serve those in need. 💙Doing this on your own and making your own decisions as a business owner, carries another level of pressure. 💙But I did it, and I’m so glad I did. 💙Thank you to those who have supported me, guided me, mentored me, believed in me, and a big thank you to those who continue to value my expertise. Such a great day combining career with family. 7 months ago the thought of using my PTO to go speak to my sons class about my profession would have been a hard no. Hi everyone, I’m Sam! I am a Speech-Language Pathology Clinical Fellow working in a hospital setting. I split my days between the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and outpatient pediatrics. I have been at my job for almost a month now and absolutely love it! I have wanted to start an instagram for awhile to share my journey in becoming a CCC-SLP! 💪🏻Check out something I am so, so proud of! 💪🏻MY PUMPING LOG! (This whole page is logged)!! 💪🏻I started with hand expression, while in my room recovering from my emergency c section, and while separated from my baby girl who was in the NICU. (For 23 days)! 💪🏻My husband helped me so much in those early days. Helping me sit upright edge of bed, cleaning my pump parts, helping store & transport my milk, & being my accountability partner to set my alarm for every 2-3 hours. (Shout out to the Dads/partners sharing this journey- your partnership is amazing). 💪🏻In those early days, I remember collecting colostrum & being so amazed by my body! 💪🏻When it was the middle of the night, I would send my milk to the nurse’s station, and my nurse would then send my colostrum down to the NICU to use for oral care. All other times, I would use this as an opportunity for *early mobility* & get myself down to the NICU! 💪🏻My baby did require donor breast milk for one day (a big hug and thank you to those who donate), but after day 2, my baby was fully consuming only MY milk! 💪🏻I’m a data person by nature, and surprisingly, this log helped keep me sane & focused when we were fully separated at night when I would go home. As trivial as it may sound, using a pen & paper and visually logging my milk supply & output each pumping session helped me feel more like a mother.
