During the Fifth Session, each Friday the Discovery Studio has been fortunate enough to host a Hero Visit with various professionals. Last week, they hosted Angela Alberti, owner of the Field House (Northvale, NJ). Over the course of an hour, Mrs. Alberti delivered a wonderful message to the Falcons, speaking passionately about the importance of effort, and achieving goals one didn't think oneself possible of reaching. Just as we at AABC believe every child is a genius who can change the world, Mrs. Alberti explained how everyone can be an athlete. During the week, Discovery and Sparks Studios came together to brainstorm ideas for new after-school clubs. At AABC, the after-school clubs are led ONLY by the learners, and this is a wonderful opportunity for each Falcon to come up with ideas they are passionate about. The adult in this photo is Michal Leshem, the Lead Guide for Journey and a co-founder of AABC. She wasn't in the Studio to tell the Falcons which clubs they could join, to veto the suggested clubs, or even to lead the meeting. Her role was simply to write out the clubs on the whiteboard and facilitate the discussion. This is what a Learner-led community looks like: it is a place where the adults are not there to lecture or to command but to guide in a Socratic way that enables the learners to take control and lead their journey. A large part of a Learner-led Education is that the Guides (or adults) make themselves as small as possible so that the learners have space to always be taking on larger leadership roles in the Studio. Twice a week, a Falcon from the Journey Studio (11-14) comes to the Sparks Studio (5-8) to lead a Morning Launch. They prepare the Launch themselves, then lead it and get feedback. This session, your child will have the option to choose D&D, Photography, Yoga, Robotics, Music, Magic Tricks, Ceramics, East Meets West: Mandarin Fun, and SmART Games. Every club is designed for beginners and those with more experience. Running until July 1st, each club is led by an experienced mentor, equipped with years of practicing their craft and helping others sharpen their skills. No matter your child's interests, it's certain they'll be able to find a club that appeals to them. Not only will they learn new skills, but they'll have a lot of fun doing it. Humans of CHP - Mr. Robert Nolan, Math Teacher - Grades 5 & 6 “When I was fresh out of college, I had a business background. I was living at home, working, and playing a lot of pickup basketball with one of my middle school coaches. I always had an interest in coaching. One day I casually brought it up with the coach and said, ‘How do I get into teaching?’ I left it at that and didn't follow up on it. A few months later he reached out to me. There was a job posting at his old school which was just five minutes away. Even today, I remember my interview with the Physical Education teacher at the school. We went outside during his gym class and played lacrosse with the students. It didn’t even feel like it was an interview as we went on playing the game, chatting, and having fun while at it. At that point, I knew it was genuine, and felt very real. I did that for five years at a high school. I built great relationships with those kids and even ten years later we share a special bond. I realized the impact I had on the students’ lives - something I tried to find in another profession and couldn’t find the same satisfaction. No matter which job I tried, I would always circle back to teaching and here I am today! I found my true calling and didn’t look back!” #njprivateschools #mathteacher #motivationalmonday
