Have you noticed any of these in your child recently?👆🏽 If so, don’t worry! Early intervention is all about giving your child the extra support they need to thrive. It’s like giving them a little boost to help them reach their full potential! Here’s the good news: There’s no single “right time” for early intervention. The most important thing is to SPOT THE SIGNS EARLY AND SEEK HELP! ❗️ Remember, early intervention is all about progress, not perfection! It’s never too early or late to ask for help! . . . . . . . . #thebrainhousecompany #specialeducation #specialed #specialneedsmom #specialneedsparenting #specialneedskids #adhdawareness #adhdkids #specialneedsfamily #autismawareness #autismmom #autismfamily #cerebralpalsyawareness #autismmonth #autismparenting #autismspeaks #autismspectrum #autismsupport #speechdisorders #learningdisabilities #learningdifficulties #learningdisorders #specialkids

Know the Difference | Educational Therapist versus Tutor Educational Therapist: "has educational and experiential background in special education." -AET; Creates and implements intervention plans to support academics, executive functioning, and/or behavior; May act as an advocate on behalf of their student. Tutor: May have little to no professional, educational, or experiential background in teaching; Provides homework assistance; Helps students keep up or catch up to what is being taught in general education. #educationaltherapy #edtherapy #education #educationaltherapist #therapist #learning #autism #disability #sped #specialed

Supporting executive function for school participation and performance goes well beyond, planning, time management and organization. ⁣ To do anything in school we use executive functions. Kids need to inhibit responses, initiate tasks, use working memory, self regulate, and cognitively shift from day one. ⁣ (Spoiler... many are not ready) ⁣ ⁣ Check out this weeks post and how we must level up our intervention to support executive functions. ⁣ ⁣ Link to post: https://ot4adhd.com/2024/04/28/school-based-ots-role-in-executive-functions/

When Olivia’s parents noticed her struggle to read people’s faces and interpret their gestures, they initially thought she was shy. 🫣 She often seemed lost in group activities at school, missing cues that her peers responded to effortlessly. ❓ Concerned, Olivia’s parents consulted her teacher, who suggested that these could be signs of Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NVLD). Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NVLD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by significant difficulties recognizing and processing nonverbal cues and challenges in visual-spatial reasoning. Who has an interview soon? The biggest mistake you can make is not preparing! You must have someone to help you prepare! Find a friend or family member to go over interview questions with you. Give them a list and have them randomly select 5-10 questions each time you have a mock interview, this will keep you on your toes just like in a real interview. Ask that person to give you HONEST feedback. Are you taking too long to formulate a response? Are you saying like or Um too often? This feedback will only help you improve. In order to be most comfortable for the real thing- I highly suggest having mock interviews often! The more practice the better. Do you have an interview tips to add? Let me be clear, I truly loved the folks who I found saying this. Mostly everyone means well and is only trying to help. …I also say it myself when consulting with educators! Again, it’s not the phrase itself, but what surrounds it. A strategy (tool) is useless without the guidance around how to actually use it - the guidance many preventative and responsive behavior strategies require. 🤔 Have a question surrounding a particular “tool” you’ve been told about? 📩 Shoot us a DM and we would be happy to provide some general guidance. #sped #specialed #specialeducation #specialeducationteacher #teachertips #iteachsecond #iteachthird #iteachfourth #iteachtoo #teacherlife #teachersofinsta #teachersofthegram #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram #elementaryteacher #teacherideas #teachers #classroommanagement #highschoolteacher #classroomideas #firstgrade #secondgrade #middleschoolteacher #firstyearteacher #newteacher

What is AuDHD? AuDHD is a fairly new term coined by the neurodivergent community to recognise the coexistence of ADHD with Autism. Most individuals experience overlapping traits of around 50-70%! This demonstrates that binary stereotypes are often not useful; just because an ADHD person is sociable and bubbly, doesn’t mean they can’t have autism too. Likewise an autistic person who is organised and sensible, could still have ADHD as well. Do you think this applies to you or anyone you know? • • • #education #educationalneuroscience #neurodiversity #adhd #diagnosis #neurodivergent #dyslexia #EHCP #neurodiverse #autism #adhdsupport #specialneeds #anxiety #dyslexic #inclusion #tutoring #spld #processing #nd #specialeducation #educationalconsultancy #dyslexiateaching #autismawareness #teaching #sendco #specialed #classroom #tutoring #homeschool #neurodivergentcommunity #audhd

Homework that should take 15 minutes but takes hours to get through? 😣 You're not alone. I've been hearing so many parents describing that struggle recently. It can be so frustrating because you know if they'd just sit down, sit up straight, focus, and get it done, they could have it done in no time at all. 😵‍💫 💔 But instead it's almost as if they insist upon making it painstaking and difficult and frustrating for everyone involved. I'm here to remind you that that's not their intention. They don't know why, but they know that this task is going to be so incredibly difficult for them. 😕 It's going to be exhausting, it's going to be uncomfortable, and it's going to feel frustrating and difficult. THAT'S why they get resistant. As a speech-pathologist, in my field we would focus on targeting executive function deficits…planning, organizing, initiating, breaking tasks up into smaller steps… but without focusing on the underlying brain 🧠 based issues this can be challenging, and can limit progress. Underlying issues like: ✊🏻Their grasp reflex makes it harder than it should to write. 👀Weak visual function makes it so hard to stay on task. 👂🏻They're exhausted from all of the auditory input from their school day. 😩 & They're tired of working so hard to sit up straight. But the good news is, none of these struggles have to last forever.💞 🧠Reflexes can be integrated, Auditory Processing gets stronger so quickly, and visual function is a simple fix. 💪🏻 DM me 💌 "homework" and i’ll send over a quick video that will teach you more about what's going on in their brain, why they struggle, and how you can help them overcome the struggle for good and unlock their best self. 🌱💗

Today, we're on a secret mission to identify some little learners who might have hidden "superpowers" – also known as Special Educational Needs (SEN)! These superpowers aren't invisible, but they can be unique. Here's how to spot them: Spotting the Signs of SEN 🔍 Difficulty in Concentration: Does your child find it hard to focus on tasks or activities for a significant amount of time? This could be a sign. 📍Struggles with Reading or Writing: If your child is finding it hard to grasp these basic skills, it might be an indication. 📍Challenges in Communication: Difficulty in expressing thoughts or understanding others can also be a sign. 📍Behavioral Changes: Look out for any sudden changes in behavior or mood swings. Remember, these signs don’t necessarily mean your child has SEN. They are just indicators that you might want to seek professional advice. Early intervention is key to unlocking your child's full potential! . . . . . . . . . . . . #thebrainhousecompany #specialeducation #specialed #specialneedsmom #specialneedsparenting #specialneedskids #adhdawareness #adhdkids #specialneedsfamily #autismawareness #autismmom #autismfamily #cerebralpalsyawareness #autismmonth #autismparenting #autismspeaks #autismspectrum #autismsupport #speechdisorders #learningdisabilities #learningdifficulties #learningdisorders #specialkids

What does a hand 🤚 reflex have to do with speech 🗣️ and feeding 🍴 development? 🤔 The Palmar Reflex is important in the first 12 weeks of life for grasping and gripping. This reflex should integrate by 6-9 months old to make way for later developing skills like picking up small pieces of food 🍉 🍌 🥒 🍪 🧇with the thumb and index finger and voluntarily releasing an object (Think about that exhausting “game” of they drop it, you pick it up, and the cycle continues! 🥱) But, why is this important for speech 🗣️ and feeding🍴 development? 🧐 There is a direct link between the Palmar ✋ Reflex and early feeding skills! This reflex can actually be elicited by sucking movements (think kneading of the hands while nursing 🤱) Think about when a child first learns to button a shirt 👔 or write ✍️… children will often stick out their tongue or lick their lips… and if the reflex doesn’t become integrated, they will adopt an immature grip that will impact development of neat, legible writing ✍️ and can have an adverse affect on fine muscle coordination, including those muscles needed for feeding and speech articulation! When the reflexive relationship between the hands 🙌🏻 and mouth 👄 continue it can negatively impact the fine motor control of muscles in the mouth 👄 needed to produce clear and precise speech 🎤 and manipulation of food in the mouth during feeding 🍽️ The 🧠 brain based program we use at Delta Genesis ✨ addresses this reflex and SO MUCH more! Reflex integration is just one piece of the puzzle 🧩! DM me for more information about the approach we use to help families navigate this journey 🚀 There is hope 🌈 #mellilomethod #deltagenesis #reflexintegration #speechlanguagepathology #balancingthebrain #learningdisabilities

🗣️ The Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR) plays a significant role in shaping your child's speech, language, and communication skills🧠💬 The TLR is the foundation of the vestibular 🧠 system (I’ll talk about that in a future post… SUPER important!) When the TLR is active, it can influence body posture, head control, and even impact the development of oral motor skills crucial for clear communication. ✨ Understanding and addressing the TLR can be a game-changer in supporting your little one's journey 🚀 to effective speech, language and communication. 💥 Recognizing a retained Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR) involves observing certain everyday signs in children 🧒 👧 1. **Challenges with Head 🧒 Control:** Difficulty in maintaining stable head control, especially when moving between positions like sitting and standing. 2. **Balance Issues:** ⭐️ Children might struggle with balance and coordination, affecting activities such as walking, running, riding a bike or navigating uneven surfaces. Children with a retained TLR could be seen as “clumsy”, falling often or running into things! 3. **Poor Postural Control:** 💥 A retained TLR can contribute to challenges in maintaining proper posture, impacting activities like sitting comfortably at a desk or table. These are the kiddos that lay their head on their desk or slouch in their chair. Poor postural control impacts control of structures needed for clear and precise speech 🎤 and articulation! 4. **Oral Motor Difficulties:** 👄 Coordinating oral movements, such as difficulties with chewing, swallowing, or articulating speech sounds. 5. **Fine Motor Skill Delays:** 🌟 Issues with tasks like handwriting ✍️ or manipulating small objects can be linked to a retained TLR affecting overall motor coordination. Motor coordination is CRUCIAL in speech development! The brain 🧠 based program that I use with Delta Genesis ✨ addresses this reflex and these symptoms and SO MUCH more! 💥 DM me “TLR” and I’ll send you a short video explaining some of the science behind the approach we use to support children and families on their journey 🚀

🌟 Did you know that the Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (STNR) plays a crucial role in your child's speech and language development 👶💬 and so much more! 💥 When the STNR is active, it can influence a child’s ability to coordinate head and neck movements, impacting posture and oral motor skills. 🧠✨ Understanding and addressing the STNR can be a key step in supporting your little one's communication journey. 🚀 A retained Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (STNR) can manifest in various ways in daily activities: 1. **Difficulty Crawling:** 🌟Children with a retained STNR might struggle with crawling as the reflex interferes with the reciprocal movement of the arms and legs. Contrary to recent CDC milestones, crawling is a CRUCIAL milestone for later speech and language development! 2. **Challenges in Hand-Eye Coordination:** ✍️ Writing, drawing, or even catching a ball 🏈 may be more difficult due to disrupted integration of hand and eye movements. 3. **Poor Posture:** 🚶🏻‍♀️A retained STNR can impact posture, causing difficulties in sitting upright for extended periods 🕰️ or maintaining proper alignment during fine motor tasks. 4. **Oral Motor Issues:** 👄 It can affect the coordination of oral muscles, leading to challenges in activities like chewing, swallowing, or articulating speech sounds. 5. **Reading 📖 and Writing ✍️ Difficulties:** Children might face challenges in tracking lines of text, as the STNR influences head movements, potentially impacting smooth eye movements needed for reading. Understanding and addressing these challenges can be crucial for supporting a child's overall development, including speech, language and communication! The brain 🧠 based program I use with Delta Genesis ✨ addresses these symptoms by targeting integration of the STNR! 🌟 DM me “STNR” and I’ll send you a 13 minute video explaining some of the science 🧬 behind our program and why it’s so powerful in bringing change to the children and families we serve! There is hope 🌈

💥 What if the ATNR (Asymmetric Tonic Neck Reflex) isn’t integrated on time ⏰ Symptoms of a Retained Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR): 1. **Delayed Hand-Eye 👁️ 🤚 Coordination:** Difficulty coordinating hand movements with visual input, possibly affecting tasks like reaching for objects. Babies (and ultimately children) learn from exploring their environment… experience impacts motor development, which impacts language and cognitive development! 2. **Balance and Posture 🚶🏻Issues:** Challenges in maintaining balance and posture, which may become apparent during activities such as sitting or standing. If you’re kiddo slouched, puts their chin in their hands, lays on their belly to read or do work… this! Kids also need strength and stability in their posture to have stability and strength in their mouth 👄 for speech! 3. **Crossed Midline Challenges:** Difficulty crossing the midline of the body, impacting activities that involve reaching across the center of the body….. including READING 📖 and WRITING ✍️ from left to right! 4. **Fine Motor Skill Delays:** Delays in the development of fine motor skills, affecting tasks like ✍️ writing, buttoning, or using utensils 🥄 🍴 ✏️ ✂️ … and even SPEECH! Speech is the most complex fine motor movement for us to execute! 5. **Visual Tracking Problems:** Issues with smooth visual tracking, leading to difficulties following objects with the eyes. 6. **Difficulty with Bilateral Integration:** Trouble coordinating movements between both sides of the body, impacting activities that require synchronized actions…. SPEECH is a highly synchronized action! 💥 The brain 🧠 based program I use targets integration of this reflex, and many more! But, reflex integration is only ONE piece of the 🧩 puzzle! What if traditional speech and language therapy isn’t working for your kiddo 🧒 👧 ? Traditional speech and language approaches don’t always lead to the kind of progress 😔 that many parents have hoped to see with their child’s speech, language and communication, especially those with diagnosis like Autism. Many parents have lost hope 🌈 that their child can and will learn to use age appropriate speech and language and to communicate functionally. Well, I’m here to say, THERE 👏🏻 ABSOLUTELY 👏🏻 IS 👏🏻 HOPE 🌈 Traditional speech and language approaches are more “top down”, symptoms based, approaches. They do not typically address the underlying neurological 🧠 root causes of the symptoms kids 🧒 👧 are manifesting. Although important, they are one piece of the puzzle 🧩! A brain 🧠 based approach is required to pull out the greatest potential 🙌🏻 especially in the areas of speech, language and communication 🗣️ Targeting unintegrated primitive reflexes, nervous system regulation and stimulation of the immature areas of a child’s brain 🧠 are all necessary to bring about a child’s greatest speech, language and communication potential! 🙌🏻 Functional speech, language and communication are ALL positive ⭐️ symptoms of a well integrated, well regulated, and mature neurological system 👏🏻 This is the approach I am now implementing in my collaboration with Delta Genesis! 🌟 If you have a kiddo that has hit a road block or is stuck in their speech, language, or communication development, reach out! Or if this reminds you of a friend or family member, please share! ✨ It’s literally my passion ❤️ and purpose to support children and families 🤗 and to bring hope 🌈 back to the journey! 💥Stay tuned for more info on each of the pieces of the brain based approach and how it relates to how children develop speech, language and communication! #autism #hopewithautism #deltagenisis #deltameanschange #autismsupport #autismfamily #autismparentsupport #melillomethod

🧠 Understanding the Impact of the Moro Reflex on Speech and Language Development 🗣 Hey friends! 👋 Did you know that a primitive reflex called the Moro reflex can play a significant role in speech and language development in children? 🧒👧 The Moro reflex is an automatic response seen in infants when they feel a sudden change in their position or experience a loud noise, or something comes into their visual field too quickly. While this reflex is essential for survival and protection in the early stages of life, it can cause issues if it's not integrated properly. 😮 When the Moro reflex remains unintegrated past the typical age, it can cause an unwanted set of symptoms to manifest. Symptoms could include sensory sensitivities 💥 emotional reactions (like anxiety), 💥 poor concentration 💥 fine motor challenges 💥 balance and coordination issues 💥 speech and language delays 💥 poor emotional regulation 💥 poor attention 💥 and academic challenges! Speech and language involve complex motor skills, sensory processing, and attention. If a child is constantly in a state of heightened sensitivity due to an unintegrated Moro reflex, it can be challenging for them to concentrate on communication tasks. 🤐 Recognizing and addressing this issue early is crucial, ⭐️ as timely intervention can make a significant difference in a child's development. The brain 🧠 based program that I use, in collaboration with my friends at Delta Genesis, aims to integrate primitive reflexes like the Moro reflex (and several others)! We also work to integrate both hemispheres of the brain 🧠 to establish and restore the balance necessary for maximum manifestation of your child’s potential! DM me for more details on how I can help! There is hope 🌈

Rooting Reflex & Communication 🧠 Did you know that the retained rooting reflex, which is typically present in newborns, might have an interesting connection to speech and communication delays? 🤔 Prolonged presence of this reflex could lead to the following symptoms: 1. **Persistent Mouth 👄 Movement:** Continued turning of the head and opening of the mouth when the cheek or mouth area is touched. So kids may not like their face washed or wiped, or may try to bite you when you try! These kiddos have a “messy” face often 🤗 2. **Difficulty with Solid Foods 🍗 🥦 🥗 :** Challenges transitioning to solid foods due to ongoing rooting responses. 3. **Speech 🗣️ and Communication Delays:** Prolonged rooting reflex might interfere with the development of oral motor skills, potentially impacting speech and communication milestones. 4. **Oral Sensitivity:** Heightened sensitivity around the mouth area, leading to aversions or challenges with activities like teeth brushing 🪥 5. **Difficulty with Latching 🥛 :** In infants, a retained rooting reflex may cause challenges with breastfeeding, as the baby might have trouble maintaining a proper latch. Understanding these subtle links between early reflexes and later milestones can provide valuable insights into child development. It's fascinating how interconnected our developmental 🌱 journey really is! If you have a child or know a child with these symptoms, reach out! The brain 🧠 based program I use can address a retained rooting reflex and help relieve these symptoms! There is hope 🌈
