As parents of a child with Autism we would like to remind the world that we are still learning too. We do a lot of guessing, especially with a non-verbal child. We are trying our best to raise our children to be the most successful humans they can be. That means accommodating for their needs, advocating for them, being their teacher and making hard decisions. All while processing it all ourselves and learning along the way. My little baby girl will be 18 in one month today. Even though I already have two other adult children, this one is hitting differently and I. AM. NOT. COPING 😭😭😭 The last time I felt this emotional about Immy getting older was when she was year 11 & everyone else was doing their GCSE’s. Its the last day of autism awareness month. I didnt think at the start of this month I'd be now saying I've been diagnosed with autism. But I'm slowly adjusting now. I have alot to learn about myself. I feel like I've done well to go through life for 30 years without knowing. So I feel like I'm stronger than I thought. I'm proud to be ME! That’s right! There is a legal process for a child to receive special education services. 🏫 IDEA- is the nation’s special education law- Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. IDEA It gives children from birth through high school (or up to 21 years old - whichever comes first) the right to receive special education services. It also provides parents with specific rights and protections. I will go over in more depth in another post... 🫶 School districts must provide students with FAPE (Free and Appropriate Public Education) while providing the Least Restrictive Environment. (The field of special education is filled with acronyms- but I am here to break it down for you!) Schools are also responsible for Child Find- which is finding and evaluating children who are suspected of having a learning disability. 🔍 If the child has a qualifying disability- they have the right to receive special education services through an IEP (Individualized Education program). An IEP is a legal document that has many components- and can be very daunting for parents- but in short it contains the student’s strengths and vulnerabilities and how the school plans to help the child improve and build skills. (Will go over the intricacies of IEPs in a future post). 🙌 As a former and teacher and school psychologist, I witnessed the anguish and anxiety the special education process caused parents. I made sure I eased their concerns informing them of the process, the IEP, the meetings but most importantly reviewed their child’s qualifying disability (how it translates to their performance in the classroom and the supports that will allow the child to continue making progress.
