Meeting the Himba at their village in Kamanjab was a pretty special experience. It’s a nomadic tribe, but their village in Kamanjab seems a little bit more permanent. It was interesting to have some very basic communication with them and see how they live in their little huts. The women of the tribe are still wearing their traditional dress, however the men… we didn’t see any of them, or they were wearing western sportswear. Unique to Namibia are the Quiver Trees that you can mostly find in the southern half of the country. They can also be found in South Africa’s Northern Cape province. It’s a very unique tree, that’s actually not a tree but a succulent plant. They grow on rocks and don’t do well in wet areas. Hence, they do well in the arid regions of Namibia and South Africa. There’s about 250 Quiver Trees, or Kokerbomen (in Afrikaans) at the Quiver Tree Forest just outside Keetmanshoop in Namibia. This makes it one of the best places to see these trees, some of which are 200-300 years old!! The trees look heavy and bulky but because they are almost hollow inside they’re very light. There’s a few dead trunks at the Quiver Tree forest that you can easily lift, making you look like the Hulk. Unfortunately, there’s not many quiver trees left, making this a protected species. Visiting Sossusvlei and Deadvlei in Namibia has been on my bucket list ever since I saw that movie with Jennifer Lopez, The Cell. The movie is so-so, but still it inspired me to visit Namibia.
