Our North Star for this year #metgala: In 1964, Susan Sontag defined #camp as an aesthetic “sensibility” that is plain to see but hard for most of us to explain: an intentional over-the-top-ness, a slightly (or extremely) “off” quality, bad taste as a vehicle for good art. #metgala2019 #metgalaredcarpet #camp #metcamp #campfashion #metgalatheme #metgaladecor #campdecor #pink #pinkdecor #overthetopdecor #barbie #ladygaga #cher #campdesign #notesonfashion #gaga #ladygaga #metgaga

O u t f i t s . l a t e l y *work & play* -corsets, slip dresses, leather jackets, jumpsuits, trousers, cowboy boots, metallic shoes, and ???! Experimenting with new styles is fun. Personal style is about finding what works for you. For me it's about buying things that excite me and finding a way to mix it into what I already own. Also, it needs to have that element of ease because, as a mom and business owner, I like to be ready in less than 15 minutes! And I need to be able to work in it all day. I don't like things that are fussy. So when I'm considering buying something, it needs to check off those boxes for me. Fit and function✔️ It's important to identify what your pillars are when ur getting dressed so when ur making purchases you get the best value for your hard earned $$. You want to actually wear what you buy, for it to make sense in your life, for it to work in your closet for more than one occasion, and have it stay in your closet for years (for me at least). Play and try to pinpoint your pillars. Have fun and remember to add yourself to it. Mary Quant, the iconic British designer of the 1960s, changed the fashion game with her signature mini skirt, bob hair, thick mascara, and daisy logo. Her business strategies were a significant factor in her success, and they still inspire small brands today. Mary Quant's brand differentiated itself by creating a younger and more swingy style for youths, in contrast to the elegant and ladylike styles of the previous decade. She also introduced the concept of mass production and ready-to-wear, making her designs accessible to the general public. Her emphasis on fun design, visual branding, and marketing strategy helped her brand stand out and become popular. These business strategies are still effective today. Small brands can learn from Mary Quant's legacy and create a unique and differentiated style, leverage visual branding and marketing, and make their products accessible through mass production and ready-to-wear to succeed in the highly competitive fashion industry. 👉Read more about the case study of Mary Quant via bio🔗 #anna_scrapnobook #notesonfashion #MaryQuant #FashionIcon #60sStyle #SmallBusinessInspiration #VisualBranding #MarketingStrategy #MassProduction #ReadyToWear #FashionIndustry #Differentiation #BrandSuccess #FashionHistory #FashionLegacy #FashionDesign

#notesonfashion Remember the fad of green tracksuits that went viral due to the #SquidGame? Social media has given the niche market a powerful tool to connect with followers in ways that the mass market cannot match. In the past, the fashion industry relied heavily on top-down media, but today small communities can influence the market and even the mainstream. As I mentioned in "Microtrends are a new wave to influence the mass market." the internet has made it possible for small events to go viral and have an impact on the wider world. In this new environment, influencers often lead the trends and build stronger communities than brands themselves. However, the traditional top-down approach still has its place, as seen in the example of Louis Vuitton's strategy to use its superstar designer to bring attention to the brand and extend its customer base. As we look to the future, there is no reason why these two approaches cannot work together to yield even better results in 2023 and beyond. By combining the strengths of both approaches, fashion brands can create a new impact that is more powerful than ever before. 📰@BoF: Op-Ed | Go Big or Go Hyper-Niche 👉"Microtrends are a new wave to influence the mass market."🔗BIO #anna_scrapnobook #fashıongram #fashionmarketing #fashionmarketingtips #fashionmarketingagency #fashionmarketingstudent #fashionmarketingdigital #fashionmarketingsecrets #fashıongram #fashiongram #fashionmarketer #fashionmarketing #niche #luxuryfashion #luxuryfashionstyle #luxuryfashionbrand #fashion design #fashiontrend #fashiontrends #fashiontrendy #fashiontrends2023 #trending #trendingnow #trending2023 #trendingnews #notesonfashion

The new chief creative officer, Daniel Lee, recently spoke to @BoF backstage at his debut for @Burberry. In the interview, he expressed his positive view of the brand and the inspiration he draws from the city. However, some people have criticized his first collection for not living up to expectations. In today's fast-paced world, people often crave quick and stimulating experiences, like viral videos on social media. But how long do these fads really last? And can they truly help maintain a brand's value? Regardless, I believe that the colorful and oversized check patterns featured in the collection will leave a significant impact on Burberry's history. Starting in 2023, all brands participating in Copenhagen Fashion Week are required to meet a minimum set of standards. This standard encompasses six crucial areas: strategic direction, design, material choices, working conditions, consumer engagement, and show set. The standard includes 18 action points that span the entire supply chain. This minimum set of standards not only serves as a benchmark for evaluating the sustainability strategies of other fashion brands, but also provides a reference point for emerging designers as they build their own sustainable brands. #viviennewestwood was not only a fashion designer but also an activist and iconoclast. Her innovative, challenging, one-of-a-kind personality stimulated the mainstream fashion industry in the 70s. And her trademark puck and new romantic style as provocation and subversion of the existing cultural phenomena led contemporary fashion in the UK. Her exaggerated design and attitude toward chasing self-expression through cloth and music were the most impressive. She also showed her care for climate change and political passion, even though sometimes these actions damage her reputation. But she kept being herself and spoke out to let everyone know everybody could change the world. "Tomorrow is too late, SOS." She said at the conference of @bof VOICES 2021. It is a reminder to ask us to chase what we think is right, not just for climate change, but everything we believe desires our attention. And like her intentions offering people to project personalities through her clothing, just being ourselves, no matter who you are and at what age. credit: “Vivienne Westwood by Vivienne Westwood & Ian Kelly, 2014”; 薇薇安·魏斯伍德的時尚生涯, 2005”; “the Business of Fashion VOICES, 2021” #anna_scrapnobook #behindfashion #notesonfashion #britishfashion #londondesigner #punkfashion #newromantic #climatechangeawareness

Some notes on fashion 2022. It was positive at the beginning, but the invasion of Ukraine made the whole world sucks in uncertainty. Then the rising inflation rate and energy costs push people to rethink spending. Also, the pandemic kept affecting many countries and areas, so the economy still seemed like a mess for most people. Creative designer movements of fashion houses this year meant a generation was over. 2023 may start a new one as consumers change their shopping behaviour after the pandemic and also the effects of the scandals of these fashion brands. Also, some influenced people left this year. #anna_scrapnobook #behindfashion #notesonfashion #fashionbusiness #recap2022 #fashionnews #fashionmarketing #fashiondesigner #gucci #alessandromichele #daniellee #burberry #corperni #bellahadid #bellahadidstyle #adidas #kanyewest #balenciaga

F|W’22: COLLECTION NOTES ▶️ • The Fall/Winter 2022 collection, titled “Autumn Sea” draws inspiration from the silhouettes of the year 1975, with re-imagined classic styles for today’s woman; the collection offers all of the major fall and winter wardrobe staples from structured wool outerwear pieces, sophisticated knit tops and satin blouses, fit-perfected trousers and a new skirt in both solid colors and our two limited-edition prints. • It’s time to stand out from the gray of winter with bold hues of persimmon, fuchsia, emerald, rich navy and eye-catching prints that perfectly tie the collection’s color story together. The color story was inspired by the boldly-saturated coral reefs of the ocean as well as the deep, richly hued foliage of the changing season, hence “Autumn Sea”. 🍂🪸 • The collection features wool/viscose blends for coats, cotton/viscose blends for trousers and skirt, Pima cotton/modal/silk and 100% silk satin for our selection of tops and blouses, while coat linings are of polyester fiber*. • *As our company continues to grow, so does our commitment to our planet and reducing our consumption of non-recycled polyester, which will remain at a rate of under 10% of the entire collections until we are able to implement more sustainable options, eventually eliminating the use of non-recycled polyester altogether! • The Fall/Winter 2022 collection launch date will be announced first to our email subscribers. Sign up today at www.BRYANvanHAUGHTON.com to receive 10% off your first order and be among the first to see and shop the final collection! • • • #BRYANvanHAUGHTON #slowfashion #collection #notesonfashion #madetoorder #fashionbrand #instafashion #fallfashion #winterfashion #styleinspo

#RFH052: JEAN PAUL GAULTIER SPRING 2011★ 🌹Jean Paul Gaultier's [@jeanpaulgaultier] Spring 2011 show was infused with a rock 'n' roll attitude. Walking to a Joan Jett-filled soundtrack, models in lace body stockings, Dr. Martens, and spiky coiffed wigs that alluded to Jett, Debbie Harry, and David Bowie, the runway was a veritable rock opera. 🌹Look 15. Model Milagros Schmoll wears a blue 3/4-sleeve leather jacket and matching leather shorts with a black net leotard. The designer presented a new hot version of David Bowie's [@davidbowie] ice-blue suit, originally designed by Freddie Burretti for the 1973 'Life On Mars?" video [ #RFH046 & #RFH047]. In a hard rock flash, the electric-blue eye shadow orbs and fire-red spiked mullet contributed to the militant energy and otherwordly androgynous glamour that shaped the collection. 🌹Look 5. Model Alana Zimmer wears a intergallactic 3D-printed denim jacket with matching jeans and a black lace leotard. Gaultier included several pieces that came alive with the 3D glasses that included in show's invitation. 🌹Gossip's front-singer, Beth Ditto [@bethditto], opened and closed the show. — [📸: Vogue Runway] #jeanpaulgaultier #gaultier #jpg #davidbowie #freddieburretti #ziggystardust #lifeonmars #runwayshow #bethditto #RFH #rockfashionhistory #rockhistory #fashionhistory #fashionstudies #glamrock #notesonfashion #jpgrunway #gaultierarchives

#RFH051: GUCCI FALL 2016 ★ Look 15. A model wears a baby blue suit designed by Alessandro Michele [@alessandro_michele] for Gucci [@gucci] Fall 2016. The contrast peak-lapel jacket features a button-embroidered heart. 🌹Marked by its flamboyance and androgyny, Michele's collection showed slim-fitting, wide-lapeled suits in bright hues, busy patterns and embroidered details, which bore a striking resemblance to David Bowie's early 1970s style, particularly the cross-reference of David Bowie's ice-blue suit that he wore in the 'Life on Mars?' promotional video [ #RFH046 & #RFH047]. Michele’s Gucci Fall 2016 collection earnestly referenced highbrow and pop culture reaffirming the new creative direction of the house: lurex knits, snakeskin suits, heels embedded with pearls, and sunglasses encrusted with crystals. — [📸: Vogue Runway] #gucci #alessandromichele #davidbowie #freddieburretti #ziggystardust #runwayshow #lifeonmars #RFH #rockfashionhistory #rockhistory #fashionhistory #fashionstudies #70srock #1970sfashion #glamrock #notesonfashion

#RFH048: BEAUTY ON MARS★ "In 2003, somehow Vogue acquired some of [Bowie's] old wardrobe with his blessing so we wanted to do a shoot on Kate. [...] Kate had both the attitude and the physical side of it which made her perfect for it and she loved it, she was incredibly good. Her talent is bringing out the narrative that’s in the piece of clothing—that’s why she’s such a good model. She can put on that pale blue suit and suddenly bring out the same narrative that Bowie would have brought out when he wore it." — Nick Knight. 🌹Photographer Nick Knight shot Kate Moss [@katemossagency] in David Bowie's [@davidbowie] ice blue suit, worn in the 'Life on Mars' video, for the May 2003 issue of British Vogue [@britishvogue]. Moss wore the ice-blue flared trouser suit designed by Freddie Burretti [ #RFH046] for the 'Life On Mars?' promotional video shot by Mick Rock [@therealmickrock] in 1973 [ #RFH047]. Moss also wore the nipped-in waistcoat with the sequin lightning bolt that Bowie originally left out. 🌹As with all his shoots, Knight filmed the working process of the "Oooh Fashion!" editorial [ #RFH012, #RFH018, #RFH040] for his archive, available to watch fully via YouTube and SHOWstudio [@showstudio]. — [📸: Nick Knight @nick_knight] #davidbowie #katemoss #nickknight #freddieburretti #mickrock #ziggystardust #lifeonmars #RFH #rockfashionhistory #rockhistory #fashionhistory #fashionstudies #fashioneditorial #britishvogue #70srock #1970sfashion #glamrock #notesonfashion #aboutfashion

#RFH047: BOWIE, ROCK, & THE SPIDERS FROM MARS★ 🌹Photographer Mick Rock shot and directed the promotional video for David Bowie's [@davidbowie] "Life on Mars?" in 1973 to accompany the single’s release, which first appeared in the Hunky Dory album in 1971. Rock produced the video for less than $350, shot in one day at the Blandford West Ten Studio in Ladbroke Grove on June 13th 1973. "It wasn't so much as an idea but a moment in time," Rock has since explained. "I wanted to do something that looked a little like a painting." 🌹The video shows Bowie in extreme close-up as the entire landscape of the film, surrounded by a crisp white backdrop, and wearing the ice-blue suit designed by Freddie Burretti [ #RFH046]. The frosted turquoise suit contrasted dramatically with Bowie's bright red mullet. The elaborate kabuki-inspired make-up, done by Pierre La Roche [ #RFH020 & #RFH039], stands out against the pure white background. 🌹Upon its 1973 release, 'Life on Mars?' reached no. 3 in the UK and stayed on the charts for thirteen weeks and is considered one of Bowie's greatest masterpieces. — [📸: Mick Rock @therealmickrock] #davidbowie #mickrock #freddieburretti #pierrelaroche #ziggystardust #lifeonmars #musicvideo #RFH #rockfashionhistory #rockhistory #fashionhistory #fashionstudies #70srock #1970sfashion #glamrock #notesonfashion #aboutfashion

#RFH046: DAVID BOWIE AND THE DESIGNER FROM MARS★ 🌹A 19 year-old Freddie Burretti was working for a Greek tailor on King’s Road when he met David Bowie [@davidbowie] at the El Sombrero club in the late 60s. Burretti quickly became the sartorial right arm of the singer’s entourage. His elegant tailoring became evident in Bowie's iridescent ice-blue suit designed for the “Life on Mars?” promotional video shot by photographer Mick Rock [@therealmickrock] in 1973. 🌹Burretti's suit is comprised of a long, lightweight jacket, made of synthetic satin, with extra wide lapels and double-welt pockets. The trousers have large turn-up cuffs. Finally, a vest with a sequined lightning bolt. The vest is not worn by Bowie in the video. Bowie wore the suit with a stylized white-collared, black-and-white striped shirt, a silver dotted tie with red and white stripes, and a pair of Oxford wingtip platform shoes. He also wore his silver Peruvian wedding bands on the left wrist. 🌹Of the many suits and costumes that bore the Burretti name [ #RFH007 & #RFH043], the ice-blue suit is perhaps the one that made the biggest impact. The three-piece satin suit references Yves Saint Laurent's celebrated 'Le Smoking' tuxedo suit. Taking bits and pieces from both men's suits and women's clothing, its androgynous silhouette combines the subtlety of a narrowed waistline, sharp pagoda shoulders, and an overall elongated line. — [📸: David Bowie Archive / Victoria & Albert Museum @vamuseum / Helmut Newton @helmutnewtonfoundation, 1975] #davidbowie #freddieburretti #mickrock #ziggystardust #lifeonmars #RFH #rockfashionhistory #rockhistory #fashionhistory #fashionstudies #70srock #1970sfashion #glamrock #notesonfashion #aboutfashion

#RFH042: WALTER VAN BEIRENDONCK FALL 2013★ 🌹Titled ’Shut Your Eyes To See’, Walter Van Beirendonck's @waltervanbeirendonckofficial Fall 2013 collection featured glittery lurex, elaborate knitwear, and metallic lace-up platforms. The Belgian designer cited David Bowie @davidbowie as the initial influence that compelled him to start designing. Look 5 & 6. Models wear skinny-cut blazers featuring large shimmering lightning bolts, similar to the one across Bowie’s face on the Aladdin Sane album cover [ #RFH039], styled with platform boots. Look 17 & 21. Models wear artsy knitwear in a riot of colorful geometrical patterns, reminiscent of Kansai Yamamoto's knit leotard [ #RFH016]. Bowie's eyes were featured on Picasso-style knit vests and jackets. #RFH041: SAINT LAURENT AT THE PALLADIUM – FALL 2016 MEN AND WOMEN, PART ONE★ 🌹Look 89. Model Katy Dron wears a Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane black, peak-shoulder dress with silver lightning bolt embroidery, styled with a black broad belt, black lace up boots, and blue glittery eye make-up. The flash embroidery channeled David Bowie's @davidbowie 1973 Aladdin Sane lightning bolt [ #RFH0039]. Slimane has openly cited Bowie as one of his greatest influences. 🌹Creative and Image Director, Hedi Slimane @hedislimane, took Saint Laurent's Fall 2016 collection to the West Coast, his home since 2008. Held at the iconic #HollywoodPalladiumTheater, 'SAINT LAURENT AT THE PALLADIUM' paid tribute to the strong music scene of Los Angeles and Slimane's second project in the city after his exhibition 'CALIFORNIA SONG' at the Museum of Contemporary Art in 2011. The event also celebrated the 50th anniversary of Monsieur #YvesSaintLaurent’s #RiveGauche @ysl collection and marked the last Slimane-designed ready-to-wear collection for the French house. 🌹No matter the time in history, Slimane's ethos is at the core of Rock & Roll. The summation of his vision closely intertwines design and photography with his fascination for music. Once influenced by rock stars, he soon propelled to cult star status himself as the authentic antagonist to the sanitized world of fashion. — [📸: Hedi Slimane @hedislimane / Vogue] #hedislimane #SLP #saintlaurent #saintlaurentbyhedislimane #slimane #davidbowie #RFH #rockfashionhistory #rockhistory #fashionhistory #fashionstudies #70sfashion #70sstyle #70srock #glamrock #notesonfashion

#RFH040: BITS & BOLTS★ "The idea for the cover came because we wanted to do a shot that looked like his record cover, to recast her into that role with that symbol. It’s almost a piece of clothing, that lightning bolt." — Nick Knight, 2016. 🌹Kate Moss @katemossagency as David Bowie @davidbowie for British Vogue May 2003 cover, shot by Nick Knight. This #BritishVogue cover brought together four icons of the highest order: 🌹Moss graced the cover in a red-and-blue flash, digitally overlaid across her face by Knight using Photoshop. 🌹The shot recreated Bowie's Aladdin Sane #albumcover originally photographed by Brian Duffy @duffy_archive in 1973 [ #RFH039]. — [📸: Nick Knight @nick_knight] #davidbowie #aladdinsane #katemoss #brianduffy #duffy #nickknight #bowie #RFH #rockfashionhistory #rockhistory #fashionhistory #fashionstudies #70sfashion #70sstyle #70srock #albumcover #glamrock #notesonfashion

#RFH039: A LAD–UTTERLY–INSANE★ 1. Brian Duffy's input had a significant influence in the creation of @davidbowie’s storytelling. When the king of Glam was assuming and discarding extraordinary personas, Duffy was capturing them all from 1972 to 1980. The pair worked together in over 5 photographic sessions and produced three album covers, the most famous being Aladdin Sane, shot in January 1973. 🌹Standing as "the Mona Lisa of album covers"—an appropriate nickname coined by The Guardian's Mick McCann—Aladdin Sane features a red lightning flash, applied by Pierre La Roche [ #RFH020], that split across Bowie's face, set against his milky, almost-translucent skin and lack of eyebrows. 2. The negatives from the shoot reveal Bowie playing around with different poses, yet Duffy chose the single shot where he's introspectively looking down, apparently unwilling to face the reality of the polarities he found himself trapped in. To expand on the idea, Duffy airbrushed a large teardrop that pooled Bowie's clavicle to articulate a time when he felt himself “crack” under the building pressures of a life of fame. 🌹Aladdin Sane became the defining visual presence for Bowie. A fantastical persona he created just after becoming an international superstar with the androgynous rocker from outer space, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane transforms Bowie into a larger-than-life personality and perhaps one the most recognizable symbols in Rock & Roll. Bowie never actually assumed this look onstage. Ahead of him there still lay four more decades of changes to go through, but Aladdin Sane marked the first of 11 chart-topping albums in the UK and his official breakthrough in the US. Essentially, the album was what Bowie described as “Ziggy Stardust goes to America.” 🌹Duffy was always one to disregard conventions; his work was dynamic and inventive. Along with David Bailey and Terrance Donovan, he is recognized as the key creative force in photography that defined the Swinging Sixties. Duffy would later shoot the cover for Bowie's Lodger in 1979 and Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) in 1980. — [📸: Brian Duffy @duffy_archive]

#RFH038: FROM STARMAN TO THE MOONWALKER★ “I put all my time into creating a place where I can get in touch with people’s souls. It is clear that I don’t want to live unnoticed.” — Kansai Yamamoto @kansai_yamamoto_official Besides David Bowie, Kansai Yamamoto had fans in everyone from John Lennon to Michael Jackson. 🌹Throughout the seventies and eighties the world's biggest stars were photographed in Kansai's creations. 1. John Lennon @johnlennon and Yoko Ono @yokoono shot by Bob Gruen in December, 1980. 🌹 Lennon loved popping into #Charivari72 located around the corner from the Dakota—one of the shops from the Weiser family's mini fashion empire in New York City. Lennon was just one of the clients the Weisers would keep a particular eye out for when they were on the hunt in Europe or Asia. Shortly before Lennon was shot, Jon Weiser had presented him with a puffy Kansai Yamamoto jacket that he’d spotted in Paris and stuffed in his suitcase. Lennon loved it. 🌹The jacket bears a message from The Heart Sutra Mantra, the most commonly recited, copied and studied scripture in East Asian Buddhism. Kansai’s name is embroidered underneath the dragon’s head embroidered in golden thread on the right side of the jacket. 2. T. Rex's Mickey Finn shot by Masayoshi Sukita wearing Kansai Yamamoto.1972. 3. Michael Jackson @michaeljackson, circa 1990s. Kansai presented Jackson with a custom designed jacket during the Bad Tour. 🌹 Following the 80s, Kansai took a 20-year hiatus from fashion and staged his Super Shows [ #RFH036]. — [📸: Bob Gruen @bob_gruen / Masayoshi Sukita @masayoshi_sukita_official / Unknown]

Model Lexi Boling @lexiboling wears a printed catsuit, paired with red patent leather calf cage-heeled boots [ #RFH011], designed by Raf Simons @rafsimons for Christian Dior's @dior Spring 2015 Couture collection. Raf Simons paid tribute to David Bowie @davidbowie for the Christian Dior Spring 2015 Couture show held at Musée Rodin. The creative prowess of Bureau Betak's set mirrored Bowie's Moonage Daydream as models displayed mixed and matched colors, organza, jewel-encrusted lace, PVC, embroidery, and prints. 🌹Look 41. Model Waleska Gorczevski @waleskagorczevski wears a striped, black and silver sequin bodysuit, paired with lilac patent leather, cage-heeled boots. The look echoes Kansai Yamamoto's Tokyo Pop suit from 1973 [RFH028]. A perennial inspiration to the world of fashion, we see fashion's infatuation with the British singer, from Ziggy Stardust to Major Tom and Aladdin Sane. 🌹The soundtrack, provided by Michel Gaubert @michelgaubert, alternated Bowie songs and Japanese Glam rock. Spanning Bowie’s own illustrious career, a medley of David Bowie songs serenaded the show including "V-2 Schneider", "Moonage Daydream", "Rock ’n' Roll Suicide" and "Wild is the Wind." — [📸: Vogue / Bureau Betak]

#RFH036: FROM STARMAN TO SUPER SHOWS★ "I guess my most characteristic trait would be how I use colors. When I wear dark or gloomy colors, my feelings also get darker, gloomier. That is why my wardrobe is full of vivid clothes." — Kansai Yamamoto @kansai_yamamoto_official 🌹Kansai Yamamoto's work has echoed through fashion ever since his first fashion show in London in 1971 [ #RFH025]. The Japanese designer ignited a fashion revolution when he became the first Japanese designer to showcase his work on a London runway. 🌹Moving outside traditional fashion weeks in 1992, he began to stage theatrical extravaganzas where he combined fashion, music, dance, acrobatics and nods to #Kabuki theatre. Kansai Super Shows warranted the kind of stadium-satisfying fashion that @davidbowie so adored. The first show, “Hello! Russia”, staged in Moscow's Red Square in 1993, had an audience of 120,000. His shows continued to unfold as spectacular events in London, Paris, and New York. 🌹Kansai revealed Bowie spoke about staging a huge Super Show together while working on the V&A exhibition "David Bowie Is" but sadly, it was not to be. #RFH035: DOWN AT THE GRAMMYs★ "My whole career is a tribute to @davidbowie" — Lady Gaga @ladygaga 🌹Paying tribute to an icon can't be easy. In 2016, Lady Gaga channeled David Bowie's theatricality at the 58th Annual GRAMMY Awards @recordingacademy wearing a white kanji cape made in collaboration with its original designer, Kasai Yamamoto @kansai_yamamoto_official. Gaga, joined by American musician, record producer and composer Nile Rodgers @nilerodgers, paid homage to the late rockstar, who had passed away earlier that year, with a six-and-a-half-minute medley of some of Bowie's most famous songs. 🌹Gaga teamed up with the tech company Intel to produce the show using holography, robotics, 3D motion graphics, and live video processing. Styled with Bowie's flame-red hair, Gaga's face was cast with digitally morphing makeup, first spreading like dripping paint into the Aladdin Sane lightning bolt, then transforming into rounds of blue cast over her eyes and a gold disc evoking the Pierre La Roche–designed look [ #RFH020]. 🌹In true #hikinuki tradition, the white kanji cloak [ #RFH034] Gaga opened with revealed a bedazzled onesie underneath. Bowie’s influence on Gaga has always been evident, from the makeup she wore on the cover of her 2008 Disco Heaven to her persistently shape-shifting persona. — [📸: The 58th Annual GRAMMY Awards, 2016. #RFH034: ROCK & ROBE★ 1. One of Kansai Yamamoto’s @kansai_yamamoto_official most famous costumes for David Bowie @davidbowie is the iconic while cloak with red and black #kaniji characters. The cloak borrowed elements of #hikinuki—a technique which involves a quick onstage costume change—featuring silver buttons down both sides, starting from the collar down. 🌹The long, flowing white satin cape was lined in red and had large, red and black velvet kanji. The kanji themselves mean "exit" or "out", "fire", "breath out" or "puke", "wild" or "riot", "force". Together they actually spell out “David Bowie” phonetically ("Da Vi Do Bo Wi"). As a whole composition they loosely translate to “One who spits out words in a fiery manner.” With a quick yank at the snaps, Bowie would reveal the one-legged, one-armed knit leotard with large, donut stuffed bangles [ #RFH016]. 2. Short, white satin #kimono, fully lined in red satin, with long sleeves and a short quilted turtleneck. 🌹On the front and back of the top are paintings of trees with white birds perched along the branches. Pink flowers, adorned with beads and sequins, hang from the trees. #RFH033: STARMAN★ "It’s very hard for me to accept that Sukita-san has been snapping away at me since 1972, but that really is the case. I suspect that it’s because whenever he’s asked me to do a session I conjure up in my mind’s eye the sweet, creative and big-hearted man who has always made these potentially tedious affairs so relaxed and painless. May he click into eternity.” — David Bowie @davidbowie 🌹David Bowie dressed by Kansai Yamamoto @kansai_yamamoto_official, styled by #YaccoTakahashi, and photographed by Masayoshi Sukita. #RFH032: WATCH THAT WOMAN ★ "If Yacco hadn’t linked @davidbowie and myself, my jumpsuits would still be sleeping at the corner of my little room in Tokyo I had at the time." — Kansai Yamamoto @kansai_yamamoto_official 🌹Yasuko "Yacco" Takahashi was instrumental in fine-tuning, not only the chimera of Ziggy Stardust, but also the emerging Glam Rock aesthetic of the 1970s. Regarded as a #Harajuku pioneer and Japan's first professional stylist, Takahashi captured the spirit of a new generation. She moved between the worlds of fashion, music, and advertising, working with T. Rex's Marc Bolan and Iggy Pop, who she met through her work with Japanese music photographer, Masayoshi Sukita. 🌹Takahashi played an important role in rendering Bowie's enigmatic appeal as Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane, styling tour wardrobes and iconic photoshoots. As advised by Takahashi, Bowie debuted many of Kansai Yamamoto's confections, including the Woodland Creatures leather romper [ #RFH030] from the designer's London debut collection [ #RFH025]. 🌹In 1973, Takahashi officially introduced Kansai to Bowie. Following an introduction from Noel Gallagher, Moss read out David Bowie’s acceptance speech: "Good evening ladies and gentleman, David has asked me to say this: In Japanese myth, the rabbits on my old costume that Kate’s wearing live on the moon. Kate comes from Venus and I'm from Mars, so that's nice. I’m completely delighted to have a BRIT for being the best male. But I am, aren't I Kate? I think it's a great way to end the day. #RFH030: WOODLAND CREATURES★ "After my first fashion show in London in 1971, my clothes were stocked in a shop called Boston 151 on Kings Road in London. David had bought my Woodland Creatures jumpsuit with rabbits on it from there. I didn't really know about David's work then. I was more visual than audio." — Kansai Yamamoto @kansai_yamamoto_official 🌹Purchased at Boston 151, a shop in west London's Fulham Road, the Woodland Creatures suit first appeared at Kansai 's first fashion show catwalk in 1971 [ #RFH027]. The so-called 'Rabbit Suit' was a red hand-painted leather romper. In Japanese mythology, rabbits are mysterious creatures that live on the moon and considered servant to Moon God, #Tsukiyomi, only visible on certain full-moon nights in September. 🌹Bowie first wore the jumpsuit on August 19, 1972 at the legendary Ziggy Stardust show at The Rainbow Theatre in North London. — [📸: Jeffrey Mayer @jeffreymayer / Debi Doss @debi_doss]

#RFH025: HELLO! FASHION★ "The Show of the Year… a spectacular coup de theatre" — Harpers & Queen magazine on Kansai Yamamoto's first London fashion show in 1971. 🌹@kansai_yamamoto_official (1944-2020) may be best known for the costumes he designed for @davidbowie, but he also made waves on the runway. Kansai showed his first collection in London in 1971—one of the first Japanese designers to show in Europe. His avant-garde designs, clean silhouettes, and sculptural tailoring in flashes of color and saturated patterns catapulted the Yokohama-born designer to international acclaim. He garnered critical success for taking to Europe the Japanese concept of #basara—a concept that celebrates the exuberant side of Japanese culture. 🌹Neither David nor Angie Bowie were at that Kansai Yamamoto's first fashion show in London, but the couple picked up on the Japanese designer after he was featured in the UK media. Bowie was already a fan of Yamamoto’s work and wore plenty of his clothes during his Ziggy Stardust era before officially working together from 1973. Together they produced one-off showpieces for the Aladdin Sane Tour [ #RFH001]. Kansai's signature designs turned fashion shows into large-scale spectaculars which echoed traditional Japanese elements such as #KabukiKumadori (painted faces of kabuki theatre), #yakko (depiction of Japanese warriors), and line work reminiscent of the raked gravel lines seen in #karesansui (Japanese rock gardens). — [📸: Masayoshi Sukita @masayoshi_sukita_official / Hiroshi Yoda hiroshiyoda for Harper's & Queen / Roger Jackson.
