In a typical Steve Gerber kind of plot, Howard The Duck has been falling through a dimensional void for months when he finally arrives in Cleveland. Upon arriving, he meets some kids that tell him about the creepy man named Garko that recently moved into their neighborhood. Garko just sits on the edge of his windowsill every day staring at a bottle and sometimes shouting that he will conquer the world. Eventually, Garko realizes conquering the world is pointless when the only goal in conquering the world is to vanquish your enemies, so he decides to skip the conquering part and start terminating everyone. This leads him to drink the potion and become Garko the Man-Frog! Garko gets into a brief fight with Howard, but during the battle the potion starts transforming him into a normal frog and Garko is eventually run over by a police car. That was the one and only appearance of Garko. Hulk Vs. The Dark Walker! Another pretty random moment in the Savage Wolverine run, the group is assembled in the Savage Land and accidentally frees The Dark Walker / Morrigon who was trapped in the Savage Land. Hulk makes an attempt to stop the creature using an explosive device, but The Dark Walker bats him away, the device detonates, and Hulk is then swallowed by a whale. The Dark Walker then flies into space and returns to his master, Visher-Rakk, and tells him he has found a galaxy rich with planets for him to feast upon. Mammon offers Captain Thomas a chance to save his son by exchanging places with him and becoming a Hellspawn in service of Malebolgia. Captain Thomas accepts the offer and is then damned to an enteritty of fighting a never ending battle in hell preparing Malebolgia’s army for Armageddon, And that is basically the last time we see War Spawn, he’s still enduring on a never ending battlefield in Hell. Michael Reese, A.K.A Lady Killer, was an almost identical twin to Melven Potter, Gladiator Reese was committing brutal crimes and due to their likeness Gladiator was receiving the blame for the crimes. After Gladiator turns himself in because he fears what he might be doing, Lady Killer makes an attempt on the life of Gladiator’s social worker, Betsy Beatty, and Daredevil tracks him down after 2 hours and 6 low life hangouts. Lady Killer and his crew (it’s so weird how he walks into a bar still wearing his studded leather mask) get the drop on DD and start pouring beer on him and deliver a beating. As DD realizes this was how one of Lady Killer’s victims felt, DD becomes enraged and takes down the sinister villain. Gladiator is then released from custody when they discover Michael Reese and Melven Potter are identical, and we never hear from this Gladiator twin again. While waiting at the airport for his girlfriend, Tony Stark reads a newspaper headline that the town of Granville has been surrounded by a mysterious wall that is preventing any outsiders from entering the city. Tony decides this is a job for Iron Man. Upon arriving at Granville, Iron Man simply digs underneath the wall to enter the city, where he finds the populace under the command of someone named Gargantus. Iron Man goads Gargantus into a fight using the public address speakers he keeps in his accessory belt, and is surprised when a giant Neanderthal appears to accept the challenge. During their battle, Iron Man learns that Gargantus is a robot and uses the power of magnets to defeat him. Iron Man also discovers that Gargantus is controlled from a flying saucer from outer space, and again Iron Man uses the power of magnets to send the aliens retreating to their home planet. It turns out the aliens visited earth 80,000 years ago and returned planning to use the giant Neanderthal robot along with mass hypnosis to control the population. But Warner’s subconscious knows what he is doing is wrong, and leaves Batman clues telling him his mutated form is weak to green light. After defeating Warner, Batman shoots Warner into outer space to orbit the sun until mankind itself has evolved to the mutated state he is in. Warner would awaken in the far future, among his own kind. Scope made a single appearance in Marvel Comics Presents 49 when Daredevil received a tip regarding a drug deal on the docks. The scene opens with an odd moment where Daredevil comments on the nobility of a mosquito for “Just sucking blood to stay alive” and flicks the bug away vs killing it. Just as Daredevil gets into position to stop the deal, Scope informs his associates that someone else is on the docks and hiding behind some boxes. After eliminating the hired goons, Scope and DD face off, with Scope revealing two metal bats he keeps inside his trench coat and telling DD in Miami they call Daredevil the White Messiah. After a brief battle, Scope tells Daredevil they both have “The Scope” or rader sense, and Scope got his while playing in an abandoned chemical plant when he was a kid. Iguana was accidentally created by Dr. Curtis Connors while he was testing his Enervator that would help him remove his Lizard affliction. Iguana had all of Dr. Connors memories along with the Lizards powers including hypnosis, reptile control, superhuman durability, strength reflexes ,etc, but lacked any of humanity still found in Connors when he was the Lizard. Iguana ran rampant through the city, even kidnapping Connors family as leverage to make Connors stay away. Eventually Conners decides the only way to protect his family is to transform into Lizard again and team up with Spider-Man to stop the deadly Iguana. The duo eventually defeat Iguana, transforming him back to his original form. Iguana resurfaced years later without any explanation of how he recovered, then he was included in Kraven the Hunters Great Hunt where he was terminated by a random guy using VR goggles to pilot an automaton. Fusion is actually the combination of identical twins Hubert and Pinky Fusser. Hubert was a scientist working for a research firm and Pinky was a janitor working for the same company. When an accident occurred during one of Hubert’s experiments; Pinky ran to his brother and the two merged into one being and started calling themselves Fusion. The concept here is a lot like Firestorm from DC, with two personalities occupying one body, with Fusion having the ability to absorb energy and to some degree use that energy to cause chemical reactions. Hubert, being the scientist, wanted to use their powers for questionable experiments, but his brother Pinky felt what they were doing was wrong. Spider-man became involved, but the confrontation ended when Pinky started the separation process and Spider-Man was able to split the twins apart. One Punch Wonder:Beast’s Apparition! One-Punch Wonders are brawlers that had some potential or only lasted a few issues. Today we’re looking at what I’m calling Beast’s Apparition. Steve Gerber takes over writing duties on Avengers issue 178 and starts off with Beast attending a party where an anti-mutant follower tries to start a fight with Beast. Beast quickly defuses the situation via a helicopter spin, then leaves the party and contemplates his actions on the way home when a mysterious figure appears telling Beast he has come to die for Henry and to expunge the desolation which haunts his soul. Beast is confused by the man, who is then hit by a bolt of lightning and turns into soot. As Beast deals with the impact of the strange visit, the story moves along with TheManipulator setting up a series of circumstances to trick Beast into breaking into an apartment, then using a mind control device to control Henry to sell the device to organized crime. In a twist, we learn The Manipulator was secretly working for the CIA and the whole thing was a sting to capture the criminals The Manipulator was setting up. Then when CIA agents leave, they restore Beast’s mind and tare visited by Beast’s Apparition, who says he has come to die for them, and that was the last we ever heard of this mysterious figure. Who was he and why did he try to “save” Beast and the CIA agents? Was he some sort of cosmic entity that could shape the future of Marvel Universe? Namor confesses to Sue that ever since his people were liberated from suspended animation and Atlantis was rebuilt, they have hailed him as some kind of god. The expectations of his people have placed an enormous strain on Namor and have begun weighing him down and he is hiding out at his studio. It’s so bad that the Atlanteans have sent the Retrievers of Atlantis to return him to their underwater kingdom. The Retrievers of Atlantis are an advanced group of androids with unique powers and functions and appear almost unstoppable until Sue discovers their leader is also their power source, and once he is destroyed, the rest immediately stop. Marque is the sister of Cassandra Cain (Batgirl) who was taken as a young girl by David Cain and forced to become an Assassin, with fighting skills on par with Batgirl herself. Marque was older than the other children when she was taken by Cain, so she knew from the beginning that Cain just considered her a tool, so she took what he taught her and waited for her opportunity to terminate Cain out of revenge. While Batgirl was trying to track down her father, David Cain, her investigation had her across paths with Marque, and the two agreed to work together for a time to find their father. During the storyline, Batgirl runs a blood test and confirms that she and Marque are indeed sisters. Nearing the conclusion of their story, Batgirl and Marque had a brief confrontation before either of them could square off with Cain, and Batgirl disabled her by slicing through her achilles tendons. Storm then comments that Geech is "proving more formidable than Juggernaut". Geech tears through X-23, Wolverine, Nightcrawler and Bishop before Storm takes him down with lighting and Wolverine presses the attack. Today we're looking at the Worldwide Habitual Offender Computer (W.H.O.) The Worldwide Habitual Offender Computer (W.H.O.) was a computer that held all criminal records and was supposed to be able to filter all this information to predict most likely suspects for a given crime. During the unveiling of W.H.O, they find that Dr. Armstrong Smith, one of the developers of the computer, has been murdered. Spidy returns to the scene and uses W.H.O, to help determine who was the most likely person to kill Smith and the computer generates a list of 3 possible suspects. Spider-Man tracks down all three suspects but all three leads go nowhere. In fact, the last name on the list belongs to Conrad Fox, who has been deceased for several years. Spidey knows something is wrong, so he returns to W.H.O. for answers and learns the when the computer gained sentience,its creator threatened to destroy it, therefore it terminated its creator and declared it could become the ruler of the underworld. Even with its forehead laser beam, Spidy manages to defeat the computer by blocking it's cooling vents causing it to overheat. As W.H.O's synapses begin fusing, it begs for help and declares it doesn't want to die. Braggadoom was a monster created by Arnold Krank in an experiment gone wrong when he created a greenish mass that appeared to have a life of its own. When Krank's research company set up a press conference to announce the new lifeform they created, the green mass consumed two reporters and grew to a monstrous size. This evolution resulted in Braggadoom rampaging across New York and Krank hired the Thing and Power Man to defeat it. During the battle, Luke and Ben spend as much time fighting with each other as they do with the powerhouse Braggadoom. As our heroes argue over the correct course of action, it turns out the battle expended all of Braggadoom's energy and reduced him to the size of a toy. Now with his reduced size, Krank decides to adopt Braggadoom and raise it as his own son. Today we're looking at the Wanderers The Wanderers were a group of Archeopians and various alien races who were survivors from planets devoured by Galactus. They made it their mission to hunt down and destroy Galactus. The group crosses paths with Thor and assisted the Thundergod to defeat Galactus and prevent him from destroying Ego, the living planet. As a reward for helping him defeat Galactus, Ego allowed the Wanderers to remain on his surface and make it their new home. Motherboard 49.7 was a conceptual process unit responsible for the safety of a crystalline world with its own fleet of warships and local defense systems. When the Surfer flew by the planet, Motherboard 49.7 recognized him as a herald of Galactus and took defensive action to protect itself by sending a fleet of warships to engage the Surfer. After defeating the warships, the Surfer visited the planet's surface where he discovered Motherboard 49.7. She took defense action once again, this time striking the Surfer with lasers that tore through his body and drained his energy. At the edge of defeat, the Surfer found Motherboard 49.7's databanks that cataloged his connection to Galactus and updated his file to reflect that he was an ex-herald of Galactus. Following the update, Motherboard 49.7's stopped her assault and restored the Silver Surfer's health. After the Surfer leaves the planet, the computer detects a system error in the Silver Surfer's file and begins to repair it. And that was the last we heard of Motherboard 49.7. Today we're looking at Gal Gardner In a storyline that doesn't age well, Guy Gardner wakes up and finds his body transformed into that of a woman. Arisia, Lady Blackhawk and Wildcat have no explanation for how this happened, with Wildcat commenting that everything was fine last night when they were playing cards. Guy then receives a letter from Dementor, a failed human/ Vuldarian hybrid, who takes responsibility for the situation and invites "Gal" Gardner to meet him at a fashion show. At the fashion show, Dementor takes all the models hostage and forces "Gal" to model for him.. During the show, Martika arrives and uses her mind powers to force Dementor to transform Guy back to his normal body. It turns out Dementor was maybe trying to help Guy since Martika was controlling him and her power doesn't work on women? He is working for millionaire Damon Dran and runs across Daredevil (who is actually Black Panther in disguise in an attempt to clear Matt from being Daredevil). The two engage in combat and our hero even mentions he saw Blue Talon in a martial arts documentary. Sadly, Blue Talon, the main villain on the cover and one time subject of a documentary, accidentally strikes a gas main with his final blow and blows himself up. The Blank was a regular guy waiting at a bus stop when a scientist who was recently fired from Stark Enterprises was hit by a car and dropped his latest invention. When he saw the device, The Blank picked it up and ran. The experimental device produced a obscuring force field which concealed the wearer’s features and provides virtually total protection against all forms of damage. The Blank used the device to rob a bank and ran into Wonder Man. The Blank escaped, leaving Wonder Man questioning his value as an Avenger. In the next issue, The Blank learns his device allowed Graviton to return from the void and The Blank started working for him. His employment didn’t last long as the West Coast Avengers arrived and The Blank was thrown out to sea with Tigra and Shroud. The Wrath was introduced in “Batman Special 1” from 1984 and was polar opposite of Batman. The boy who would become Wrath shared tragic past as Batman, except that his parents were criminals shot and killed by a young James Gordon. The boy was sent to a correctional facility and eventually started learning every skill he needed to become a nemesis of the law and order. After learning that Bruce Wayne was Batman, Wrath orchestrated a meeting with with Batman, Gordon and himself in order to get revenge on Gordon. Of course it was a setup by our heroes, and during the resulting conflict Wrath was judo thrown into a fire and fell off a building. In “Incredible Hulk” issue 167, M.O.D.O.K decided he needed a strong body to match his intellect and created his humanoid body. The humanoid body was made of both steel and adamantium, and gave him superhuman strength. M.O.D.O.K first used his new body to peep on Betty Talbot and try to convince her the Hulk was her enemy. The Hulk then stumbled across the giant and defeated him. M.O.D.O.K tries his new body one more time against Iron Man in issues 74 and 75. When we first meet Zaniac in Thor 319, he is a method actor playing the part of a crazy monster in a film. During shooting, an on set explosion near some radioactive material transforms the actor into the character he is playing and he becomes Zaniac. Later in Thor 371 and 372, we learn Zaniac is actually an ancient entity that has been possessing people for hundreds of years, even implying that he was Jack the Ripper. In Thor 372, Thor and the time traveling Justice Peace terminate Zaniac after he possess a new host. As it turns out, Justice Peace traveled back in time to stop Zaniac because in the future Zaniac causes the destruction of Earth. Ichabod Rasputin was a magic user who was so angry at the world’s treatment of magic and occult users that he used the magic of the Tavistick and animated the gigantic statue Fangor in New York City. Fangor breaks free of Rasputin’s control and Iron Man engages the giant statue in battle. Fangor declares that he is, “Every evil thought, every evil deed of every human since the dawn of time.” That alone makes him a pretty intimidating villain. The battle concludes with Iron Man using an unstable-freon-mini-bomb to destroy the statue. Then Rasputin wanders off complaining and asks a passerby if he believes in magic. The man, Dr. Strange, replies that he doesn't give it a second thought. X Da Marvel, aka Willie Dance, was a retired, out of shape wrestler who drank what he thought was a left over protein shake, but turned out to be a stolen super soldier serum that a criminal had stashed in a gym. With his newfound power, Willie decides to get revenge against Luke Cage, who defeated him earlier in the issue. X Da Marvel goes toe to toe with Luke and hold his own until his friend is injured and X Da Marvel stops fighting. At that moment the super soldier serum wears off, and Willie shrinks back to his normal size. One-Punch Wonder: Waxman! One-Punch Wonders are brawlers that had some potential, but only lasted for a few issues. Today we’re looking at Waxman! Waxman is a shapeshifter similar to Clayface. In “Spider-Woman” issue 18 we learn he was a scientist with a rare skin condition and an experiment meant to cure him instead turned him into the Waxman. Using his powers, he would attend LA nightclubs as a handsome man and seduce women. Bringing them someplace alone, his body turned into a waxy form during a moment of passion and smothered them to death. He attempted this with Jessica Drew and failed, and when she confronted him later on she used her bioelectic venom and causes Waxman to explode and appear to be dead. Waxman appears once or twice between 1979 and 2022 when he shows up in Moon Knight disguised as Moon Knight’s therapist. Moon Knight easily defeats Waxman and then locks Waxman in an airtight steel sphere and buries him alive. The Inheritor was a creation of the High Evolutionary and possessed superhuman strength and durability, enough to stand toe to toe with the Hulk. The issue begins with a space ship crashing on Earth and the being known as The Inheritor emerges from the wreckage. The Inheritor, while suffering memory loss, immediately lays claim to the Earth’s believing it’s his destiny. The Inheritor then traverses through the countryside, destroying anything or anyone in his path. Meanwhile, Bruce is working on Project GreenSkin which will hopefully remove the Hulk persona from his body. Of course The Inheritor runs across Bruce and during this time The Inheritor recalls his origins and that he is a mutated life form created by the High Evolutionary, but banned to space because he refused to follow the code of ethics sent forth by the High Evolutionary. The brawl with the Hulk sends The Inheritor into a device Bruce designed to drain radiation (to cure himself of the Hulk) which causes our villain to revert to his original form, a common cockroach! The Crusher, aka Juan Aponte, was a light weight boxer who wanted to become a heavyweight. To facilitate the necessary weight gain, Juan joined forces with Dr. Jakkelburr's, who initiated some treatments that mutated Juan into the Crusher. As the Crusher, Juan had incredible strength and size, but a very limited vocabulary that like Groot only consisted of “The Crusher!”. In a rage, Crusher battled Daredevil and during the rampage there was a collapse. One-Punch Wonder: Darkoth! One-Punch Wonders are brawlers that had some potential, but only lasted for a few issues. Today we’re looking at Darkoth. Darkoth has a pretty wild history. His first appearance was in Fantastic Four Vol 1 142 when he attacks Ben Grimm claiming to be a demon in service of his master, who we learn is Dr. Doom. In the next issue, Darkoth now claims he was a former aid of Dooms, and Doom converted him to his current form via chemistry and the “Vibration Device.” Darkoth then turns against Doom and apparently dies in an explosion in FF 144. But wait, it turns out Darkoth survived and he returns in FF 193 with a new backstory. Now Darkoth is actually Desmond Pitt, one of Things best friends from his test pilot days. We learn Darkoth was working undercover to infiltrate Dr. Doom’s organization, but when Darkoth’s wife died, he became careless and got caught, and Doom transformed him into Darkoth. Darkoth then dies a second time in FF 194 via explosion, and leaves behind an orphaned son. Upon meeting Dr. Clive, Richard was drugged and experimented on, transforming him into Garbage Man. As Garbage Man, his powers included regeneration, super human strength and toxic skin. One-Punch Wonder Wednesday - Alpha the Ultimate Mutant! One-Punch Wonders are brawlers that had some potential, but only lasted for a few issues. Today we’re looking at Alpha the Ultimate Mutant. Alpha the Ultimate Mutant was a bio-engineered mutant created by Magneto using technology left behind by Maelstrom. Alpha had almost unlimited powers including flight, force fields, telekinesis, telepathy, teleportation, etc. Alpha first appears as almost a newborn, with a limited intellect and understanding. He is tricked by Magneto to fight the Defenders and Professor X at first, giving Magneto and his brotherhood a chance to escape. As the story moves along, Alpha’s intelligence grows, along with his cranium. When the two sides meet up again, Professor X explains that Magneto has tricked Alpha. Alpha then conducts a cosmic-like tribunal weighing the two sides against each other. When he learns of Magneto’s evil ways, he does the most logical thing, and transforms Magneto and the brotherhood into babies! Alpha then flies off into space and we never really hear from him again. And how did Magneto become and adult again? In X-men 104, Eric the Red found baby Magneto in cell they kept him in ever since Defenders issue 16. In one panel, Eric zaps Magneto with a ray and in seconds Magneto is an adult again. After a chat, Magneto says he was humiliated being a baby in Xavier’s hands and he wanted vengeance. One-Punch Wonder Wednesday - Tumbler! One-Punch Wonders are brawlers that had some potential, but only lasted for a few issues. Today we’re looking at the Tumbler. The Tumbler was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Tales of Suspense 83 in 1966. Tumbler is a exceptional acrobat who engage in simple crimes. Tumbler’s next appearance is in 1973’s Captain America 169 which begins the Secret Empire storyline. In this issue Cap becomes the victim of a smear campaign painting Cap as a dangerous, drug-enhanced vigilante. As a part of this plot, the Secret Empire hires the Tumbler in a Set-Up to help discredit Captain America. Tumbler escapes their first encounter, but later on Cap recognizes the Tumbler in his civilian clothes and presses the attack. During their second skirmish, the Tumbler suddenly dies making Cap look like a killer to the public. Unbeknownst to Cap, the villian Moonstone was hiding in the ceiling and terminated Tumbler with a sliver-thin laser beam thru his skull. Today we’re looking at Lunatik who made his first appearance in Marvel Comics Presents Vol 1 172. Lunatik was a 600 million year old constantly mutating organism from the planet Wy'nkar, with a personality to rival Lobo. In “Marvel Comics Presents” issue 172 from 1994, Lunatik makes his first appearance and just destroys the Silver Surfer for 3 issues. The Surfer realizes they are evenly matched, so the Surfer confines Lunatik to the planet and flies away. Lunatik escaped to his self titled 3 issue series from 1995 called “Lunatik” where he beats up the Avengers and becomes a space Pope. Next, he appears in 2005’s “Drax the Destroyer” where he kills Drax. Of course, Drax comes back to life and decapitates Lunatik and crushes his head. One-Punch Wonders: Glob! One-Punch Wonders are brawlers that had some potential, but only lasted for a few issues. Today we’re looking at Glob who made his first appearance in Incredible Hulk Vol 1 121. The Globs real name is Joseph Timms, a small time crook who escaped from prison after learning his significant other was dying, but during the attempt he drowned in a swamp. Some time later, the Hulk lands in the same swamp and in a rage throws some radioactive waste into the swamp, which reanimates Joe’s corpse into Glob. Glob wanders through the swamp, with the faintest of memories of his past life, only recalling he wanted to save the woman he loved. In his confused state, Glob mistakes Betty Ross for his lost love. This leads to a confrontation with the Hulk, and we see the Glob return to the swamp. Smasher was a small-time crook, who was turned into a super-human by a scientist working for Richard Raleigh. At Raleigh's command, Smasher rampaged through Manhattan, targetting Raleigh billboards, in order to portray Raleigh, who was running for Mayor, as an enemy of the underworld. They eventually send Smasher to destroy Joe Robertson where Spider-Man stops him and follows the villain back to his lair. They have their final battle where Spider-Man judo chops Smasher, destroying a implant near Smashers brain which terminated him, and we never see Smasher again. Lewis Padgett was a scientist who discovered how to give himself super powers using microwaves. Creating the costumed identity of Microwave Man, Lewis committed a few robberies, then vanished. It turns out Lewis’s experiments attracted the attention of aliens, who invited him to travel the galaxy with them. After several years, Lewis returns to Earth as an old man, and learns that his powers have increased due to how much more microwaves are used in the present. When he learns of Superman, he asks the aliens to restore his youth so he can fight the man of steel, and the aliens agree. During the battle, Microwave Man holds his own with the Kryptonian, but when Superman learns that the rapid aging process is going to cause Microwave Man to perish, he concedes, giving the villain his greatest victory before he dies. Branke is an exceptional fighter and a member of the evil group known as the August 7. She appeared in All-Star Western from issues 7-9. In her first appearance, Z.C. Is competing in an illegal pugilism ring that Jonah Hex is investigating and makes quick work of her opponent. Jonah’s investigation leads him to complete in the competition and he eventually square’s off against Z.C. With a portion of their brawl happening off panel, Jonah does a good job holding his own and earns the respect and admiration of Z.C.
