This week's Grant Park native tree is the vastly under-appreciated fringetree (Chionanthus virginicus). This dainty denizen of our southern woodlands is spectacular when in bloom, with airy, drooping clusters of creamy white petals. Flowers give way to olive-like fruits which ripen to a dark, bluish black in late summer and are a food source for birds and wildlife. Simply described as five hippies sitting around a living room who became a pretty amazing farm team for modern bluegrass bands.
