I don’t suppose there are many people still following this project. Instagram isn’t really for such things. But I’ll continue to jot down notes on the progress; as much to be able to use them for another blog post at the end. So today I found that: you can use up off cuts of the Oramask; you can selectively mask areas with sellotape; and lthe adhesion problems I had can be greatly alleviated by really rubbing down the stencil, both at the start and after cleaning out. #oramask813 #screenprinting
So off I go again with the second leg of this Oramask stencil project. A few technical tweaks E.g very fresh ink base watered down a little more than usual (may have paper ‘cockling’ issues later!) to enable easier ink deposition through finer details; and also washing up with detergent water to try and avoid later adhesion problems. Now here’s a thing! Exciting experiment in further pursuit of possible ‘table top’ printmaking techniques. Although I personally have all the kit to make and use any kind of screenprint stencil, many people will not have the ability to wash out and reclaim screens. Simple paper stencils are ok but fragile and almost impossible to accurately leave ‘islands’ of stencil, surrounded by open areas. So, I saw this product - Oramask 813; made really for Cricut type machine vinyl cutters, to make paint stencils. And I thought ….I wonder if I could hand cut a stencil and effectively adhere it to a screen….print and wash out ink as normal, without destroying the stencil. Then when finished, simply peel off the stencil without recourse to chemicals and pressure washing? My research didn’t turn up anyone else trying this properly, but I don’t suppose I’m the first? I had 6 pieces of Olivewood that I had cut down to 2.5"x3.5" with the intention of them being carved into dipping dishes for, well, olive oil. That never came to fruition, but @newmansoaping had the creative idea of turning them into a nativity scene. First off. I did not create this file. I downloaded it free off a CNC for Beginners page. I did program the tool paths in Carveco Maker Plus to carve it in this piece of MDF. I painted the board black using Krylon Colormaxx Gloss Black. After letting it dry, I put the Oramask Stencil film #813 over the work are. Then I carved through the stencil using a 45 deg engraving bit. Did some clean up after and painted it using Krylon Colormaxx Gloss White. After it dried overnight, I removed the stencil covering the black, and Viola! I have a few touch ups then it’s ready to go. I think my friends son is going to love it. This happened a while back, but I had a last minute (48 hours) request to make a sign/logo for a retirement gift. I had to convert the img into a vector that was useable. It took me about 4 hours to get what you see in the first photo. Next was cutting, routing, and sealing the wood. Luckily I had some Red Oak handy. That’s the second picture, that process took about 2 hours before I could move on. Next cam the Oramask 813 and carving the file, sealing the carve, painting the carve, removal or the Oramask and paint; then a final seal. That took another 5 hours and the final product you see is the last picture. You might be thinking 11 hours of work with 48 hours of notice is plenty of time. It is if I didn’t have a 6-2 job, hour commute each way, a toddler, dog and 39 week pregnant wife to take care of. Presanding and sanding sealer is key. Varying it slightly to find the most efficient way. TEAM EFFORT ALERT My girl @bodybysmith has wanted to do something to her fire pit cover for a long time. We have talked and talked about it. We finally made it happen. Stencil designed by Jen Cut on my @silhouettecameo and taped together by me, boy was this a big sucker. 30”x30” Stenciled by Jen Enjoyed by all! This was a fun project. I had not used stencil material like this before, #oramask813 worked great. Thanks for the tip @mininessa. Although Jen did say the stenciling part would have gone smoother if it was not sticky.
