Facing East Philadelphia earlier this month was a success! Day 1 featured a panel of dancers, choreographers, visual artists, and musicians from North America; and short performance by Courtyard students. We discussed "finding a home for South Asian Art in the American diaspora", the artists' story, the larger question of "how do we engage with audience building around South Asian Art that is both global and vernacular?" Introducing artists and ensembles at this year's FACING EAST festival. 𝐍𝐈𝐂𝐎𝐋𝐄 𝐂𝐎𝐗 (𝐬𝐡𝐞/𝐡𝐞𝐫) is an interdisciplinary scholar and artist whose work explores the power of dance as a multi-sensory, communicative, and affective form of practice and expression. Nicole graduated from Swarthmore College with a dual degree in Sociology/Anthropology and Dance, with a focus on Kathak and African American vernacular roots of swing, jazz, and blues dance practices. Nicole is currently a Center for Humanistic Inquiry Fellow and Visiting Lecturer in Anthropology at Amherst College. She continues to explore relationships between techniques, aesthetics, and practitioners across time and geography, creating works that play with journeys, power, and poetics. We are marking the 10th year of Courtyard Dancers, Shubhasgram. It has been a journey of perseverance, learning, and sharing for all involved. Thank you, partners. But the main hero is Urmila Das who without fail has been teaching and building under all kinds of challenging conditions. The Covid impact was significant in this community but she made sure she could teach the girls individually or in pairs online using cell phones. The mothers often speak about the lack of playgrounds or parks in the area for children to unwind. Shubhasgram has transformed in these years from a semi-rural suburb of Kolkata. The water bodies and lush green patches are disappearing. The colorful and cumbersome houses have sprung up erratically, but the narrow and jilipi-like winding roads have remained the same. Our classes are held next to the train tracks in a clubhouse. Summer residency 2022 📣📣 📣 With immense joy and excitement, KDC is ready to welcome dancers from many US states & cities for a 3 -Day kathak intensive learning program starting tomorrow. This is an immersion program providing opportunities for future kathakars to tap into their creativity, build individuality exploring new areas of practice while engaging critically in variety of movement, expression studies in many facets of kathak. We have two accomplished educators and award winning artists, joining us as guest lecturers- Elba Hevia y Vaca artistic director of contemporary flamenco dance company @pasionyarte Pasión y Arte and adjunct professor at Drexel, Franklyn & Marshal and Temple university. Gratitude over accomplishment.. As we closed out our final performance tonight to a full house; we were amazed at how so much came together.
