Let’s talk a little bit about rejection. I created this nature papercut specifically for an art show that didn’t accept it for the exhibit. This year alone I was rejected and waitlisted for a bunch of major art shows (and all of them had application fees). I’ve applied to several residencies that have told me no, and illustration gigs that say, sorry, we know you did all the work we asked, but we picked someone else. Sometimes it feels maddening. …But then I think about how I woke up on the right side of the dirt, and tomorrow is a new day, and then I try again. In Tick Tick Boom, Jonathan Larson asked one of the people viewing his first play what to do after the first showcase flops, and the woman tells him to write another one. And then another one. Until he gets it right. So we try again tomorrow with a different thing. Y’all. My ADHD brain has got me running in all different directions right now. I’ve been mostly distracted away from art this year chasing down deep research on a topic totally unrelated to art, purely because I wanted to know the Truth— and now have almost enough information that I could probably write a book about it. (Do I do that? Put art to the side for it? I don’t know yet!) And then, when I can out that project aside to try to get back to my art, instead of working on the already multiple collections I have going on, I get inspired and spend my time working on something completely new and off the cuff. Hence this mess right here. I want to do ALL. THE. THINGS. But I don’t have time to Do. All. The. Things. Makes me frustrated. I have trouble prioritizing and focusing (unless I am hyper-focusing!) And it’s a struggle. Then I end up getting nothing done, but 10 different projects half-complete. Anyone else struggle with this? What strategies have worked for you to stay focused on one project at a time? ‘Cuz I am at a loss. Something a little different from me… I’m working on a #superlambanana papercut. What is a superlambanana, I hear you cry? Well, it’s become a bit of a symbol of Liverpool, after an original sculpture was made in the city to celebrate the different trades that have passed through the port- from livestock like lambs, to bananas! After its success, a trail of hundreds of superlambanana sculptures, was arranged around the city and now they are quite the tourist item! So I’ve been messing around with papercutting one! But I need your help! The first one is hand-cut in white card, and the second is made using a silhouette machine, on black- both with coloured scraps of card added. I can smell my favorite stew when I look at this photo. I can see the black-bellied beast of a kettle squatting on the hearth, which spans one entire end of the stone-walled kitchen. I haven't been active here for quite a while now! I can't find enough time for my papercuttings, which makes me feel sad and with "tied hands". I've probably missed a lot from the posts in this wonderful and friendly art community, too.😐 My brain and imagination are working though. My desk is full of papers and tools. I rearrange every day the pile of folders, keeping the unfinished collages and my new ideas.
