With the invitation of @belm.artspace, “the Printing Issue”, my curatorial selection which includes the wonderful prints of beloved artists, was opened in Tunalı on April 20th. In the exhibition, which will continue until May 18, I moved with the idea of opening a field of discussion and approaching the ethics of printing, the scope of production, its place in contemporary art and the “replicated image / unique work of art” dilemma. How we can read printmaking through artistic language production in the field of contemporary art in the polyphonic world of this period where “the image” is accessible is another issue. I think that the joint conversations and meetings until the end of the exhibition is will make progress in finding answers to our questions. Not quite finished with the first card but I thought I’d share the progress. I ended up screen printed the “base” of the due date cards, though I do hope to come back to laser engraving woodblocks for a future project. The type is all hand set and printed on my tiny Line-o-Scribe press. Setting the type and figuring out how to lock it up is a super satisfying puzzle for me. I write the poem as I go, often altering the words to fit the limits of what type I have available. This first round of cards will be for my Print of the Month Club Patreon subscribers. ‘William Blake Tree on Peckham Rye’ linocut edition of 10 74 cm x 101 cm. I am delivering this large scale linocut to Jane Newbery’s Gallery in Dulwich. I have only printed 2 so far in a silver grey although the edition is meant to be 10. Based on the tree that stands alone in the middle of Peckham Rye. Maybe once a year there such a thick fog that it almost disappears! I use this tree as a marker to walk the dog each morning. I walk around the tree and home again. On a foggy day it looms out of the mist as a ghostly form and I often wonder if this was William Blake’s vision. I made this linocut print last year from a projection from a video still. The projection distorted the image so that the tree becomes wider, wing like. The image took a few weeks to cut and has been printed in a silver grey on a large Somerset Satin 400gsm paper. It is the second impression from the block printed at Artichoke Print studio in Brixton. I wonder which way William Blake walked from Broadwick Street in Soho to Peckham Rye when he was 7 years old? Maybe he walked down Effra Road through Brixton following the River Effra, or he walked along the Bank of River Peck all the way to the Rye? This little single-color relief print was made in my second year living in Japan, when I was still studying the detailed business of multi-color woodblock printmaking. During my studies I made a few single color prints like this, sometimes in black with hand coloring, a larger number of kappazuri stencil prints, and mixed media works mixing lithography with stencil. The process involves layering a mix of screen-printed images, textures, and negatives. These prints come to life in their own time, all crafted through experimental methods rather than structured planning. Thematically many layers, similar repetitions of imagery and colour with different - hand made cockled marks, peel backs and reveals. They feature a fusion of fragmented, cinematic imagery and abstract shapes and strokes, all crafted using a silkscreen. Through walking and travelling in rural and urban spaces Zoe gathers collects and records marks, pattern and shapes often unseen by others. These works are inspired mainly by natural environments and have an organic feel. Day 69 of the #100day project - Today's print is partly an exploration of laziness. This print is simply a cut card which I didn't bother protecting with shellac. As it's basically a disposable plate, made only for the project, it doesn't need to have any longevity. I wanted to see just how much ink would be soaked into the mount board if it wasn't there as a barrier and whether the shellac is essential to getting a decent print.
