I'm sorry. Just two little words with so much power, yet can be so hard to say. I'm not great at apologizing. It's always been incredibly hard for me to say the words, despite feeling them. Growing up, I didn't hear people apologize, but I did hear people with authoritarian personalities always be right. It's the biggest, challenging, and most important thing I'm working on as a parent. I apologize to Ronan frequently. It was incredibly hard the first time, in fact, I don't know if I even said "I'm sorry" despite acknowledging my behavior wasn't kind. The thing is, apologizing to children is easy. They don't expect any grand gesture or have any expectations when it comes to receiving an apology. Kids are so gracious and forgiving, and apologizing for our behavior models for them that even as an adult, we make mistakes. I let my anger and frustration get the best of me. I speak in tones that aren't gentle and say things that are unkind. Apologizing to Ronan has modeled for him what it means to be sorry, and he in turn has apologized without even being prompted. I will never make him apologize because forced apologies don't teach the behavior that drives an apology. I will however continue to show him what it means to own your actions and apologize by modeling it for him. Being aware of my words, actions, and behavior, and modeling apologizing to Ronan has helped me acknowledge and apologize to other adults as well. It's truly a win-win.

1 Step Forward One Day, 10,000 Steps Back the Next... . Potty Training... As soon as we get confident in our schedule, the milestones, going in public bathrooms for the first time, having zero accidents in a day, telling me she needs to go instead of me asking, today it feels like we are starting over yet again after MONTHS of hard work. . So far today, she has had several accidents in her underwear. She tells me she needs to go today as usual then she sits and stands like what she did in the beginning. As soon as we get off the potty, she goes immediately on the rug in our living room. . Very discouraging. Extremely frustrating. It feels like all of the hard work we BOTH put in the past SEVERAL MONTHS has completely been thrown out the window. I was finally getting confident in our trust throughout this journey. She understands it. She knows what to do. Nothing is different in our schedule today. I suppose this is one of the many examples of a child going against the grain of what has been taught. . Has this happened to you before? Has your child learned something new after putting MONTHS of work in then suddenly they wake up and act like they have NO IDEA what to do? . I'd love to hear some stories. Whether they are potty training related or not. Enlighten Me.
