Are you a New York Strip type of person? Our page had a comment today that asked why we'd share a "vein steak" on a marketing photo. And, to be honest, I (Kacie) kind of feel like that way of thinking is a little old hat. Let me explain. In the first photo, you'll see a Center Cut New York Strip on the top half of the cutting board, it's also a slightly brighter color of red in that first picture. The steak on the bottom half of that same cutting board is one of about 3-4 steaks that you'll find at the butt end of a Striploin Primal, and is still classified as a New York. If you are purchasing a Bone-in Cut, the inclusion of this small muscle (gluteus medius) tells you that you're buying a Porterhouse rather than a T-Bone. But what's more, in my opinion, the seam on the otter edge of a traditional New York is at least twice as thick, and certainly more inedible, than that of the seam in a butt end New York Strip steak... or "vein steak" as the commenter called it. I added a photo of a cooked traditional cut New York Strip last. The cooked steak perfectly showcases the heavy seam on the left side of the steak that I deem inedible. The only New York Strip seem that I believe is edible, and dare I say enjoyable, is if the steak is cut closer to the Sirloin/ butt end. What have your experiences been? Is it the stuff of legend, or do you legitimately have a preference due to experience? I'll add a little factoid here at the bottom, Kitty is NOT in my camp on this one. {grin} Let's see if she reads this far... Here’s your sign to buy extra Fire Extinguishers to keep e.v.e.r.y.w.h.e.r.e.🔥 Today, a couple local women purchased some hay from a neighboring farmer. On their way out of Parowan Valley, a good citizen flagged them down to let them know the hay on their trailer had caught fire and was quickly spreading.🔥 They were at the mercy of wind and dry fuel attached to their brand new pickup. Luckily, they had time to pull into our farm and get help. I had purchased a handful of “expired” Fire Extinguishers for the farm. Reyes and a couple other men were able to put out the fire with the old, cobweb laden fire extinguishers that had been kicking around the farm. The 3 bales you see in the photos, were ALL that was left of the hay after fire, the other bales were completely taken over by flames.🫣 Reyes said; “we need to get those recharged! They’ll save a life one day. We wouldn’t have been able to save that truck if we only had a water hose.” So, buy Fire Extinguishers for every little place you can think of, and then buy a couple more. These guys had the fire taken care of before the fire department even heard of the fire (in fact, to my knowledge, they didn’t even get called out to it). Buy the fire extinguishers. The old ones, the new ones, off brand ones, whatever you need to do, just make it a priority! Picking up 3 flats of Portabello Mushrooms for our Prime Ground Beef and Mushroom Blend. It’s perfect for pasta sauce recipes, meatballs, meatloafs, and homemade burgers (think of a premium Mushroom Swiss). While there however, we noticed something new that @mvmushrooms is producing! These little pellets are spent mushroom compost and look to be a really awesome product. They’re quite tightly pressed pellets which leads me@to believe that much like a pressed coconut coir or peat product, they’ll expand to double or triple their size. Plus, they smell earthy and are leagues ahead in terms of cleanliness. Word on the street is that @ifacountrystores is carrying this product.🌱🌾🌷🪻 According to Mountain View’s website, “Compost, which is prepared specifically for growing mushrooms, is a blend of natural products. We had the sweetest compliment today. 🍪💓🫶🥹 A man from the @Crumbl Cookies corporate office in Lindon came in today with this gift box of cookies and said "people bond with their friends and family around our cookies, but it's your meat that brings my family together and I wanted to thank you." He asked that we enjoy their cookies, and bid us adieu as he head out the door. Interested in what someone of that position might purchase? You'll have to guess... we can tell you it pairs perfectly with a Gorgonzola sauce (what doesn't?), which he was well versed in making along side the cut he regularly picks up on his way down I-15. We had a great time at our Wonder Wednesday event yesterday!🌱 We went on a guided tour of the SUU Greenhouse with botany professor, Matt Ogburn, built mini terrariums with greenhouse manager, Angela Patino-Acevedo, played with flowers to learn their different parts, made art using sun paper and leaves, planted seeds, learned about Huli Huli grass, and even took some home. Additionally, we had a fun tree scavenger hunt and received a succulent building block set.
