More late pics from the show! This time featuring one of my favorite begonias, B. montaniformis. It was a subdued competitor amongst more ostentatious specimens like B. ‘Bashful Bandit’ and B. erythrophylla in flower (and it was staged on the floor while the others got taller pedestals and seemingly got knocked over a few times off its tiny block lol). Was really cool to see it still catch people’s eyes during the show or be recognized as something interesting. More of my hated terrarium begonias at the Flower Show 😂😭 1. No idea what they have against dracopelta, but the highest it scored in any given day was an honorable mention (aka slap in the face!). On at least one or two days it got nothing at all. 2. I’m guessing they didn’t like variabilis’s untidy floppiness but that’s just how it grows. 3. sp. Sarawak was blooming like crazy and had really cute color on the leaves but also hated. 4. Lichenora on the other hand was well-received for some reason. 5. Mixed reviews on dinhdui. Used this as an opportunity to space out my seedlings. 😂 6. They really loved arachnoidea 🤷🏻♀️ I think it received 1st place in its class on all three days. Another pot of seedlings separated lol. 7. Mananjebensis is growing in this perfect little bushy mound. Can’t believe it started from a one-node, one-leaf cutting a couple years ago. 8. sp. Cao Bang (blue and black) seemed to please the judges with its striking, dark leaves. 9. Mixed terrarium of burkillii ‘Silver Edge’ and dark form. Can’t resist the chance to draw a good diagram 😂 A little disheartening hearing judges who aren’t familiar with begonias, their diversity, and culture discussing and judging my bébés. Some belated Philadelphia Flower Show highlights: 1. My Begonia dregei that got first place in its category on all 3 judging days. Thanks to @plantspamming for getting it off to a good start! 2. 10" terrarium that got best multiple plant entry on the first judging day! Featuring so. much. Solanum uleanum. 3. Bigger terrarium crammed with all manner of neotropical fun. Can you spot even more Solanum uleanum? 4. Hatiora salicornioides bloomed a little too early to win the flowering cactus category, but was impressive enough to win the blue ribbon for a cactus grown in a house or office! 5. Begonia 'Lois Burke' wasn't in flower or particularly round, but had enough lovely foliage to get a 2nd place ribbon. 6. My Wardian-style case did so-so, but I really liked it! I think the judges might be looking for something more formal in this category, so back to the drawing board for next year... 7. The judges REALLY didn't like my Tradescantia zebrina cultivars haha. Pictures here: 'Discolor Multicolor' 8. Sinningia 'Zillanova' won a special prize for best flowering gesneriad last year, but this year all my Sinningias got off to a somewhat late start. 9. I was on TV, shown here with a @begonianrhapsody cameo. Some people on the show floor recognized me from that (or an educational video I was in), officially making me a niche local plant microcelebrity. It is a little horrifying lol. A little bummed I barely got any photos from the flower show (of my plants and otherwise)! Begonia variabilis (Nopphitam) terrarium I decided to enter on the last day. I was a bit bummed after assembling it that the plant with flower stalks was just slightly too tall for the main cylinder vase; luckily I had saved the dish portion of a cloche that had the dome part break in shipping and it fit perfectly.
